The Third Sunday of Easter

April 14, 2013

Brother Sun, Sister Moon, Mother Earth

Catholic Teaching on the Environment

In anticipation of the upcoming Earth Day on April 22nd, the St. Monicas Justice and Peace Committee has prepared a beautiful liturgy this weekend that highlights our responsibility to care for the earth, as good stewards of the creation God has entrusted to us. In their recent document Building a New Culture: Central Themes in Recent Church Teaching on the Environment, the Commission for Justice and Peace of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops invites us to reflect on eight interconnected themes. These express how a Catholic approach to economic questions, social justice, and environmental considerations are necessarily viewed in relation to each other. Their interrelationship is grounded within a biblical understanding of Gods creative and redemptive work, Christian anthropology, and the role God invites human beings to play in the created order. The bishops develop the following perspectives: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Human beings are creatures made in Gods image and likeness. Creation has an intrinsic order which must be respected. Human Ecology is essentially related to Environmental Ecology. Responsible Stewardship, in which creation is viewed not as something to be dominated, but a gift entrusted to our care. Care for the Environment is a Moral Imperative. Solidarity: Because creation has been entrusted to the human race as a whole, this implies not only solidarity between individuals, peoples and nations today, but also intergenerational solidarity with future generations and solidarity with the poor. Creation and Spirituality: cultivating a spirituality which recognizes the Creator through the work of creation. Responding to Current Environmental Problems through action, policy development, international cooperation, lowering consumption, and financial accountability.
