PulseModulation

Pulsemodulation(PM)offerstwopotentialadvantagesoverCW modulation Thetransmittedpowercanbeconcentratedintoshortbursts insteadofbeinggeneratedcontinuously.Thisenablestheuseof deviceswhichoperatebetterinpulseregimethaninCWregime, mostlyduetothermalreasons(e.g.semiconductorlasers, microwaveactivedevices) Timebetweenpulsescanbefilledbysampledsignalformother sources aschemetermedtimedivisionmultiplexing. AnaloguePMhasadisadvantageofrequiringlargebandwidth comparedtomessagebandwidth

PulseAmplitude p Modulation(PAM)

Ifamessagewaveformisadequatelydescribedbyperiodic samplevalues, itcanbetransmittedusinganaloguepulse modulationwhereinthesamplevaluesmodulatethe amplitudeofpulsetrain. Therefore, theamplitudes ofregularlyspacedpulsesare varied inproportion tothecorrespondingsamplevalues of facontinuousmessagesignal lx(t). ThistechniqueistermedPulseAmplitudeModulation
