Notes The origins of this translation It is well known that Lord Ve nkat tham and cane down to the holy Thiru. esvara grew disgusted with Vaikun .. pathi Hills in Bharata Vars a . Later, out his innite kindness towards those who left Bharata Vars . . a for various reasons, he came to America to reside in many cities. Poets have described these tours. Of the many such cities, He very much liked the city which is at the conuence of three rivers (Monongahela, Allegheny and Ohio). This city is Pittsburgh, PA. In that city, lives a devotee of Maha Periavaa called Ravi Venkatraman. Through mutual friends, he approached me for a translation of Maha Periavaas namavali. While some of the namavalis were simple to translate, there were many that need more preparation, knowledge and insight. (We can all agree that the meanings of the namavalis are absolutely beautiful and divine - we cannot but be transported to a higher level after reading them.) I began inquiring about the author of this namavali. I learned that Shri S. V. Radhakrishna Shastrigal (SVR) of Srirangam who is close to Kanchi Matam would be able to help me. It was my good luck that I was able to get Shri SVRs phone number during my visit to Madras in December 2002. Luckily, Shri SVR was coming to Madras itself for a short visit. I was given a narrow window of 2 hours to meet with him, right in the middle of a conference I was attending. Without any hesitation, I deserted the conference, and I ran to meet Shri SVR. The two hour window grew to four hours. He cleared all my doubts and gave clear translations to the ones I could not get. In fact, I phoned him a couple of times to get more clarications later, with the help of his nephew Madanagopal and grand daughter Lakshmi. I also sought clarication with S. Yegnasubramanian on Kundalini seats. I heard the following from Shri SVR concerning the author of this namavali. One time, the late Sri P. H. Subrahmanya Shastri, Principal of Sanskrit College, invited the Paramacharya for padapuja at Madras. In return, the Paramacharya asked him himself to compose a new namavali for that purpose. Highly honoured by this request, Sri P. H. Subrahmanya Shastri undertook that task and composed this beautiful namavali. That was some 30 years ago. This is the origin of this namavali. Namavali no. 24 was defective in all versions available to me (It contained only 15 syllables). Shri SVR suggested a correction, which I modied a little with his concurrence. Without the blessings of all the Sri Periavaas, such eorts will not bear fruit. I place this at Their feet for their blessings. All errors here are due only to me. Please point them out to me and I will correct them. .......J. Sethuraman Shrii Chandrashekharendra Saraswathi followed the 67th Ponti Shankaracharya, Shri Mahadevdevendra Saraswathi, as the 68th Ponti Shankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam.
