Roslan is the co-founder of the New Entrepreneurs Forum, technical committee member for the
development of the 9th Malaysia Plan, collaborated with the Technopreneur Association of
Malaysia (TeAM) in the strategizing development and implementation of the CRADLE
Investment Program (CIP) and currently head the Technopreneur Development Division in
MDeC.
He then turned his photography hobby into a new enterprise when he was
in secondary school. Realising that he could make more profit as a
freelance photographer, he turned down an offer to be the school’s
photographer.
Mr Rohizam continued his entrepreneurial skills during his days at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia
by doing direct selling of water filters. This was done not only to support his study but also to
practice his selling skills. He sold the products from house to house, to corporate organizations,
and even to his university lecturers. He made an average profit of RM 2,000 a month.
One of the organizations that he chose to sell his products to was Sapura Apple Computer. He
purposely chose the company to secure a job there because he liked Apple technology, a
technology that was so popular but only a few could afford it.
Impressed with Mr Rohizam’s skill and knowledge on computers, the company offered him a
job. He maximized his 3 years working experience with Apple to gain as much knowledge of
Apple. Later, he used this knowledge for his core business in Multimedia and Digital Imaging
and Virtual Reality (DIVR).
In 1996, while doing his MBA, Mr Rohizam identified Internet connectivity as a new potential
business. At that time many organizations and individuals required this connectivity.
Unfortunately, the scarce supply of expertise could not meet the high demand. Mr Rohizam
quickly picked up the technical know-how and started selling modems and Internet connectivity
to businesses and from house to house. He earned a good 75 percent profit margin.
Profits from his business had enabled him to buy a laptop, an item that cost more than RM
10,000 at that time. With the laptop he expanded his business by providing system
development services to small companies. The business gave him better profit margins,
allowing him to establish a company called Creative Advances Technology Sdn Bhd (CAT) in
1999. From a one-man enterprise, he now has more than 40 workers. The company’s paid-up
capital also increased to RM4.3 million. And within five years of operations, CAT has raised
more than RM20 million in investment.
Five years ago, in challenging his own photography skills, he started to explore the technique
of underwater photography. As this is a very expensive hobby, Mr Rohizam managed to turn
this high-risk investment into a profitable business. Today, a lot of his works have been
commercially used.
VirtualMalaysia e-tourism portal is a project where he used his multiple skills in IT, photography
and business acumen. The portal has won 8 national and international awards. Mr Rohizam has
been recognized as one of the successful bumiputera IT entrepreneurs in Malaysia.
