Fire Resistant Cables

The Last Cable Standing

Fire: a serious problem
Fires have a high cost in terms of loss of human life and of damages to plants and structures. About a third of fires originate inside buildings. Research studies in this field state that the most commonly identified cause of death from a fire accident is being overcome by gas or smoke (Department for Communities and Local Government - formerly ODPM - Fire Statistics, United Kingdom, 2005). Other influential sources have demonstrated that for the last 50 years, the average time from ignition of a fire to flashover has gone from 15 minutes to 3 minutes, thus seriously complicating the escape from fire. And this is due only to the increase of plastics in home and buildings. It has to be kept into consideration, then, that even the most sophisticated alarm systems or emergency systems can be useless if their performances are compromised by the destruction of the cables because of the fire. This is the reason why, over the last few years, the companies have strongly invested in design and development of insulation material and of cables granting the best performances in case of fire, while reducing fumes and acid gases emission and granting the circuit integrity even in case of fire. Cavicel has been present for years onto the market with its own products and its own experience.

The security of our cables during a fire

Cavicel has started designing and manufacturing fire resistant cables in the first 70s. Before that, it studied halogen free special compounds having very low fume development, when the relevant norms were not defined yet; Cavicel has then used these products in the manufacturing of its fire resistant cables. In 1983 the first patent covering an enhanced flame resistant cable had been deposited and the manufacturing of special products for specific requirements had been enlarged. Those have been more and more used with a wider and wider diffusion in many fields. The study has then included the optic fibres and in 1999 Cavicel deposited a patent covering fire resistant fibre optic cables. To improve as much as possible the research and development activity, Cavicel has equipped itself since many years with a fire test laboratory capable to carry out tests according to several international standards. Fire Resistant Cables

Construction and General Information

Insulation
The most widespread technologies to guarantee the electric cables connection integrity during a fire are currently the following: ceramified silicone-rubber mica-glass tape and cross-linked polyolefine The taping with mica tape is the most typical solution; it allows the use of several insulation materials since the fire resistance is guaranteed by the tape. The silicone rubber is currently the most frequently used solution and simplifies and speeds up the installation, thanks to the easy peeling and to the lack of tape. Mica-glass tape Silicone rubber

Conductors
Conductors can generally be according to EN 60288: class 1 solid class 2 stranded class 5 flexible

Type of conductors are chosen according to electrical characteristics, required flexibility, type of connection systems or specific installation conditions, for example: in presence of vibration or movement or reduced bending radius is preferable class 5 flexible conductor, class 1 solid conductor is preferable for permanent installation, crimping termination, in presence of corrosive atmosphere, high temperature or to facilitate the soldering is preferable tinned conductor.

Cabling
Fire resistant cables generally can be laid-up in concentric construction and in pairs. Twisting is important to reduce noise in circuits and also the lay of twist in some constructions must be carefully considered.

Screening
Screens are often used in instrumentation cables to prevent or reduce possible interference in cables that can be caused by the following reasons: Cross-talk from adjacent pairs or triples; Interference induced by external source such as electrical equipments, machinery, power line. The most popular screen is: Aluminium/polyester tape with a tinned copper drain wire or earth conductor Following screens can also been used, when required: Copper/polyester tape with a tinned copper drain wire, for a better screen effect Bare copper braid for electromagnetic interference or when the cable is subject to movements
Aluminium/polyester or copper/polyester tapes normally have a total thickness from 25 to 100 m, according to standards and are wrapped with an overlap >125% to assure a full coverage even in case of bending. In continuous contact with metallic side there could be an earth tinned conductor, same cross section of the other cores, or a drain wire, normally tinned copper, 0.5 sqmm, stranded or solid, according to cable specifications. Copper braid normally has a coverage from 80% to 95%. This type of screen presents a lower electrical resistance, a very good protection also to electromagnetic noises and a higher mechanical resistance compared to aluminium/polyester tape. It is suitable for mobile applications.

Construction and General Information

Armouring
Metallic armour are used when cables have to be installed direct buried, or if mechanical protection is required. Following points must be considered: Required tensile load Expected pressure on cable during service Protection against rodent Protection against accidental damage Minimum required bending radius. SWA: single layer of galvanized steel wires, with diameters according to relevant standards, coverage min. 90%. This armour assures a very good mechanical protection and tensile strength. An additional counterspiral tape increases solidity, if required. GSWB: galvanized steel wire braid, diameter of wire: 0.20 - 0.25 0.30 - 0.40 mm, with coverage of >80%. It assures a good mechanical resistance, allowing a lower bending radius compared to other armour. It is preferable when there is movement or vibration. For special application is possible to use stainless steel, tinned copper or special alloy wires.

Sheath
To optimize the behaviour in case of fire, best sheath is made of LSZH (Lows Smoke Zero Halogen) materials since, thanks to that, fire would not be propagated, toxic or corrosive gases would not be developed and a minimum quantity of white fumes are emitted. Other materials can obviously be used in case of specific installation requirements, such as: PVC, for example, where a higher resistance to oils and chemicals is required (this material contains halogens, so it emits acid gas and smoke). PE, when a higher resistance to water and moisture is required (this material is no anti-flame, though).

Fire Resistant Cables

Standards at a glance
A higher and higher care is paid towards safety in many places and environments in general. Fire is considered one of the most frequent cause of disasters and human lives loss. The standards have tried more and more to face this problem under various aspects. Over the last few years, particularly, both national (BS, DIN, CEI) and international (EN, IEC) standards have gone through a remarkable evolution. The evolution, though, is so fast that it is difficult to always have an updated picture. The purpose of this section is therefore to provide an overview on how the standards have faced the definition, the choice and the installation of the electric cables concerning the fire risks. Reference is also made to outdated standards since they are still present in many specifications.

Fire resistance
Fire resistance means that the cable or the installation where the cable is installed is capable to continue to operate even in case of fire for a specific period of time (from 30 to 180 minutes). To be more precise, it is possible to have two different definitions: Circuit Integrity (or Insulation Integrity) which indicates tests exclusively referred to cables; System Circuit Integrity is referred to tests on cables and systems (ladder, cable tray, clamps). In some countries, such as Germany or Belgium, the first characteristics (Circuit Integrity) is often indicated by an abbreviation (FE180 in case the test lasts 180 min) and the second one (System Circuit Integrity) by the abbreviations E30, E60, E90 that indicate the cable resistance for 30, 60 and 90 minutes according to a specific test and with different installation systems.

Behaviour to the fire of the electric cables

The behaviour of the electric cables in case of fire can be evaluated according to various aspects: Fire resistance - Non propagation of fire - Emission of fumes and acid gases The first aspect can be considered as active since the cable continues to perform its main function: transmit power and signals even during the fire. The other characteristics can be defined as passive, but of primary importance, by limiting the fire propagation and by reducing fumes and gases that are developed by the combustion and that cause severe damages and human lives losses. It must be considered, in fact, that most commonly identified causes for death from a fire incident are due to gas or smoke.

Reaction to fire propagation

Cables can be a critical vehicle for the fire transmission since they run for long tracts, even in vertical ducts that could behave as chimneys and therefore propagate the fire even in other areas. CAVICEL uses high self-extinguishing materials and realizes constructive solutions that contrast the flame propagation. Normally two characteristics are checked: non propagation of flame on a single cable alike the wiring and the non propagation of flame on more cables assembled as a bunch, as generally happens for electric installations.

Emission of fumes and acid gases

CAVICEL always uses LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) sheaths for its FIRECEL cables (unless when specifically prescribed because of special working conditions). This term indicates materials that are properly formulated to guarantee, besides the high self-estinguishing characteristic, also a low emission of clear fumes, without halogens (corrosive gases) and that do not develop toxic gases in case of combustion. Other acronyms are used, some of which are registered; it is important though that the required performance are clear. A term which is not too clear is, for instance, the acronym LSF (Low Smoke and Fumes), that, not making any reference to halogens, could also be referred to PVC; in this case, the characteristics of corrosive gases absence is missing.

Fire resistance - Circuit Integrity

The first tests on fire resistance cables were only providing the presence of flame, for example for IEC 331 standards, for a period of 180 minutes at a temperature of 750C. Subsequently the test conditions have been extended, by changing the duration, by increasing the temperature of the flame and by adding mechanical stress and water sprays. These modifications allowed to better simulate the real fire conditions, with mechanical stresses due to the fall of materials and with the presence of water for the putting out of the same. The standard BS 6387 has been introduced by keeping that into consideration: it was providing three tests on three different cable samples: one only with the flame, up to 950C (cat. C), one with the flame and water spray (cat. W), one with the flame and mechanical stresses (cat. Z). This test is still used but its limit is to require three different tests on three different cable samples. BS EN 50200 standard has solved this problem since the same cable sample is simultaneously stressed by the flame action, by the mechanical shock and by water spray.

Fire resistance

Fire resistance - Circuit integrity - Reference Standards

IEC 60331 - Tests for electric cables under fire conditions - Circuit integrity. This is one of the first tests that had been introduced to verify electric cables fire resistance. Currently it is divided in more parts that describe the test modes, the conditions and the equipment to use. The test, originally carried out only in presence of fire, now also stresses the cable with mechanical shocks. In details, the standard is subdivided in several parts: IEC 60331-1ed1.0(2009-05) - Part 1: Test method for fire with shock at a temperature of at least 830 C for cables of rated voltage up to and including 0,6/1,0 kV and with an overall diameter exceeding 20 m IEC 60331-2ed1.0(2009-05) - Part 2: Test method for fire with shock at a temperature of at least 830 C for cables of rated voltage up to and including 0,6/1,0 kV and with an overall diameter not exceeding 20 mm IEC 60331-3ed1.0(2009-05) - Part 3: Test method for fire with shock at a temperature of at least 830 C for cables of rated voltage up to and including 0,6/1,0 kV tested in a metal enclosure IEC 60331-11ed1.1 Consol. with am1(2009-07) - Part 11: Apparatus - Fire alone at a flame temperature of at least 750 C IEC 60331-21ed1.0(1999-04) - Part 21: Procedures and requirements Cables of rated voltage up to and including 0,6/1,0 kV IEC 60331-23ed1.0(1999-04) - Part 23: Procedures and requirements - Electric data cables IEC 60331-25ed1.0(1999-04) - Part 25: Procedures and requirements - Optical fibre cables BS EN 50200:2006 - Method of test for resistance to fire of unprotected small cables for use in emergency circuits. The cable undergoes the action of the flame at 850C and mechanical shocks. The test duration is expressed in minutes and is recorded in the classification: PH 15 - PH 30 - PH 60 - PH 90 - PH 120. Annex E of the standard also foresees the water stress, as previously provided by BS 8434-1 standard. This test is equivalent to IEC 60331-2. BS EN 50362:2003 - Method of test for resistance to fire of larger unprotected power and control cables for use in emergency circuits. This standard provides the same tests foreseen by IEC 60331-1 standards (Temperature of the flame 830C, with mechanical stresses) BS 6387:1994 - Specification for performance requirements for cables required to maintain circuit integrity under fire conditions. This can be defined as the historical standard for fire resistance cables since in many countries it is still the most widespread one. It has been the first to include also mechanical stress and water action in the fire resistance test of electric cables. The cables can be tested in different conditions, but most commonly required are: Cat C - test with flame at 950C for 180 minutes. Cat W - test with flame for 15 minutes and flame and water for further 15 minutes at 650C. Cat Z - test with flame and mechanical shocks for 15 minutes at 950C. Reference is also made to constructive standards, such as BS 7629 one. BS 8434-2:2003+A2:2009 - Methods of test for assessment of the fire integrity of electric cables. Test for unprotected small cables for use in emergency circuits. BS EN 50200 with a 930 flame and with water spray. This standard is foreseen by BS 5839-1:2002 standards and is an extension of the test conditions according to BS EN 50200 standards. The cable is stressed by the flame at 930C with mechanical shocks for 60 minutes and further 60 minutes with the addition of water spray. Since it has not been included in the BS EN 50200 standard yet, it is still in force. BS 8491:2008 - Method for assessment of fire integrity of large diameter power cables for use as components for smoke and heat control systems and certain other active fire safety systems. This standard is related to cables included in BS 7346-6, and certain other active fire safety systems. It is applicable to cables of rated voltage not exceeding 600/1 000 V and of overall diameter greater than 20 mm. The test methodin BS 8491:2008 includes subjecting the cable under test to radiation via direct impingement corresponding to a constant temperature attack of 842 C, to direct mechanical impacts corresponding to a force of approximately 10 N, and to direct application of a water jet simulating a water fire fighting jet. The test method given in this standard includes three different test durations to allow testing of cables intended for different applications. BS 8434-1:2003 (SUPERSEDED) - Methods of test for assessment of the fire integrity of electric cables. Test for unprotected small cables for use in emergency circuits. BS EN 50200 with addition of water spray. This standard is no longer in force since it has been replaced by Annex E of the S EN 50200 standard. Reference to it is made in BS 5839-1:2002 standard, in order to add a test with water. The cable is tested at 830C for 15 minutes in presence of flame and mechanical shocks and for 15 minutes with flame, mechanical shocks and water spray. NF C 32-070 - Tests for classification of conductors and cables with respect to their fire behaviour. This test differs from the others since the cable is not directly in contact with the flame, but it is positioned in a steel conduit inside a circular oven. The oven reaches a temperature of 920C and this causes the cable combustion. Mechanical shocks are applied to the conduit containing the cable; furthermore, the cable is subjected to tensile strength.

Constructive standards
BS 7629-1:2008 - Electric cables. Specification for 300/500 V fire resistant screened cables having low emission of smoke and corrosive gases when affected by fire. Multicore and multipair cables. This standard includes the currently most common cables onto the market of the fire resistant cables. Those cables are used in fire alarm and emergency lighting applications. They have a rated voltage of 300/500 V. Generally, the cables are particularly flexible and easy to be installed. These standards require that the cables get through the fire resistance tests prescribed by BS 6387 standards. BS 7846:2009 - Electric cables. Thermosetting insulated, armoured, fire-resistant cables of rated voltage 600/1000 V, having low emission of smoke and corrosive gases when affected by fire. Specification. This standard refers to the armoured cables with rated voltage 600/1000 V. The circuit integrity performance under fire conditions is assessed on the basis of various tests which either separately measure resistance to fire, resistance to fire with water, and resistance to fire with mechanical shock, or in combination measure resistance to fire with mechanical shock and water. BS EN 60702-1:2002 - Mineral insulated cables and their terminations with a rated voltage not exceeding 750 V. Cables. These standards apply to mineral insulated cables. Those cables have an insulation completely different from those seen so far: they are extremely resistant but rigid. Their installation is not handy and a particular care has to be paid to the installation to prevent moisture absorption by the mineral oxide.

Fire resistance - System Circuit Integrity

In this case it is required a fire resistance verification on the installed cables, as for instance according to DIN 4102 standards, part 12, where the cables are tested in real installation conditions and the resistance is verified at 30, 60 and 90 minutes (the cables are in fact classified E30, E60, E90). Another standard included in this category is NBN 731.020.

Fire resistance - System Circuit Integrity - Reference Standards

DIN 4102-12 - Fire behaviour of building materials and building components - Part 12: Circuit integrity maintenance of electric cable systems - Requirements and testing. This test foresees the installation of cables in specifically defined conditions, on ladder, cable tray, ceiling installations, in a 3 meters long oven, for a period up to 90 minutes, with a flame temperature that reaches 1000C. In this case, the SYSTEM formed by cables and accessories is tested. NBN 713.020 - Protection contre lincendie - Comportement au feu des matriaux et lments de construction - Rsistance au feu des lments de construction (avec addendum 1994) (Fire fighting - Fire performance of building materials and products - Fire resistance of building materials). The cables are installed in a 3 x 3 m testing room. They are installed on cable trays and undergo the flame action up to 1000C. The cables are classified according to their operating life.

Fire Resistant Cables

Code of practice and general standards

BS 5839-1:2002+A2:2008 - Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings. Code of practice for system design, installation, commissioning and maintenance. BS 5839-1:2002+A2:2008 provides recommendations for the planning, design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems in and around buildings, other than dwellings. It does not recommend whether or not a fire alarm system should be installed in any given premises. Recommendations for fire detection and alarm systems in dwellings are given in BS 5839-6. Cables are described in clause 26. This standard introduces two different levels of resistance of cables during a fire (standard and enhanced type) and many prescriptions regarding installations. The standard cable must withstand the flame at 830C for 30 minutes, the enhanced type at 930C for 120 minutes. Besides the EN 50200 test, the cable must also get through specific BS tests, such as the BS 8434, that, however, will be gradually absorbed by the EN standards. New fire tests are described in this standard, based on EN 50200, modified to include exposure to water spray. Even if BS 6387 is not expressively called up, for standard cross reference anyway this standard is still required. Other standards of the same series are: BS 5839-6:2004 - Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings. Code of practice for the design, installation and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems in dwellings. BS 5839-8:2008 - Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings. Code of practice for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of voice alarm systems. BS 5839-9:2003 - Fire detection and alarm systems for buildings. Code of practice for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of emergency voice communication systems BS 5266-1:2005 - Emergency lighting. Code of practice for the emergency lighting of premises. Cables installed for these systems have to withstand to fire for at least 60 minutes according to BS EN 50200. BS 7346-6:2005 (SUPERSEDED) - Components for smoke and heat control systems. Specifications for cable systems. BS 8519:2010 - Selection and installation of fire-resistant power and control cable systems for life safety and fire-fighting applications. Code of practice. BS 8519 gives guidance and recommendations on the selection and installation of power and control cable systems. It covers systems that are required to maintain their circuit integrity for life safety and fire-fighting applications. It also gives specific recommendations for electrical system design for such applications, and recommended limits for survival times.

Flame non propagation

In this case, a single cable sample undergoes the flame action of a bunsen burner. The test only lasts few minutes. BS EN 60332 - Tests on electrical and optical cables under fire conditions. These stardards describe the test conditions for a single cable. The test lasts between 1 and 8 minutes, depending on the cable diameter. BS EN 60332-1-1:2004 - Tests on electrical and optical cables under fire conditions. Test for a vertical flame propagation for a single insulated wire or cable. Apparatus. This test refers to cables having standard dimensions. BS EN 60332-2-1:2004 - Tests on electrical and optical cables under fire conditions. Test for vertical flame propagation for a single small insulated wire or cable. Apparatus. This test applies to small dimensions cables. BS 4066-1 and 2 :1980 (SUPERSEDED) - Tests on electric cables under fire conditions. Method of test on a single vertical insulated wire or cable. This standard is no longer in force and is replaced by the BS EN 60332. BS EN 50265-1:1999 (SUPERSEDED) - Common test methods for cables under fire conditions. Test for resistance to vertical flame propagation for a single insulated conductor or cable. Apparatus. This standard is no longer in force and is replaced by the BS EN 60332 standard.

Non propagation of fire

These tests simulate the chimney effect in vertical installation of bunch of cables. The tests differ for quantity of installed cables in the vertical Flame propagation structure and for the duration ofnon the flame application. BS EN 60332-3:2009 - Common test methods for cables under fire conditions. Test for vertical flame spread of verticallymounted bunched wires or cables. This test is the most common one to verify the behaviour of a cable vs the fire propagation. The cables are installed on a vertical ladder inside a metal cabinet and undergo the action of a ribbon flame at 750C. The standard is subdivided in several parts that differ one from the other for the quantity of cable to be installed, the installation mode and the flame application time. BS EN 60332-3-10:2009 - Common test methods for cables under fire conditions. Test for vertical flame spread of verticallymounted bunched wires or cables. Apparatus BS EN 60332-3-21:2009 - Procedures. Category A F/R. Installation in two layers (front and rear). Test time: 40 minutes. The standards describe the modality to be followed to measure the visibility decay inside a closed area, through the measurement of a luminous beam, by burning a specific quantity of cables. BS EN 61034 - Measurement of smoke density of cables burning under defined conditions. The test is carried out in a 3 x 3 m metal hood with a luminous beam that is transferred between two walls. The light decay due to the smoke that develops should not exceed specific values. BS EN 61034-1:2005 Test apparatus BS EN 61034-2:2005 Measurement of smoke density of cables burning under defined conditions. Test procedure and requirements. The previous standards related to fume emission measurement were: BS 7622-1:1993 (SUPERSEDED) - Measurement of smoke density of electric cables burning under defined conditions. Test apparatus. This standard is no longer in force and was replaced by the BS EN 50268-1:2000, even though this too is superseded by now. BS EN 50268-1:2000 (SUPERSEDED) - Common test methods for cables under fire conditions. Measurement of smoke density of cables burning under defined conditions. Apparatus. This standard is no longer in force and is replaced by the BS EN 61034-1:2005. The gases developed by the cables in case of fire could be corrosive. A cause for their corrosivity can be the emission of halogens that can be present either in the polymers that form the cable insulation or sheath (PVC for example) or added disguised as anti-flame products. There are mainly two systems to measure how dangerous they are. A system allows to measure the halogen contents in the gas; the second one measures both the pH and the gas conductivity. BS EN 50267 - Common test methods for cables under fire conditions. Tests on gases evolved during combustion of materials from cables. This test allows to determine the corrosivity of the acid gases, generally halogens, that develop during the electric cable combustion. BS EN 50267-1:1999 Apparatus. BS EN 50267-2-1:1999 Procedures. Determination of the amount of halogen acid gas. This part of the standard defines the method to measure the halogens quantity, by having them bubbling in a solution that is then titrated. BS EN 50267-2-2:1999 Procedures. Determination of degree of acidity of gases for materials by measuring pH and conductivity. In this case the standard allows to measure the pH and the conductivity of a solution where are collected the gases developed by the combustion of the single materials (insulation and sheath). BS EN 50267-2-3:1999 Procedures. Determination of degree of acidity of gases for cables by determination of the weighted average of pH and conductivity. In this case the standard allows to calculate a weighed average of the measured value of pH, conductivity of a solution where the gases developed by the combustion of the materials forming the cable are collected (normally insulation and sheaths). BS 6425-1:1990 (SUPERSEDED) - Test on gases evolved during the combustion of materials from cables. Method for determination of amount of halogen acid gas evolved during combustion of polymeric materials taken from cables. This standard is no longer in force and is replaced by the BS EN 50267 standard. BS 6425-2:1993 (SUPERSEDED) - Test on gases evolved during the combustion of materials from cables. Determination of degree of acidity (corrosivity) of gases by measuring pH and conductivity. This standard is no longer in force and is replaced by the BS EN 50267 standard.

The contents of this section is an overview of the problems related to the state of the art behaviour of the electric and fibre optic cables in case of fire. The picture is quite complex, both for the problems critical state and for all the connections and prescriptions existing between the various standards. Deliberately we did not deepen this topic since this would require many more pages and it would be useless in this context. It is anyhow the position of Cavicel as far as the cable behaviour in case of fire in industrial plants is concerned; more detailed technical information could be required any time at our Technical Department.

Structure

Multi Tube

For type SLO-FR the jelly filled tube containing the fibres is reinforced with glass yarns and is wound with a flame resistant tape. For type MLO-FR the jelly filled tubes containing the fibres are individually wound with a mica tape and are cabled around a central steel or FRP (fibreglass reinforced plastic) element. When necessary glass yarn is the traction element. A flame resistant tape improves fire resistance.

Inner sheath (only for A1 and A3 armoured cables)

LSZH thermoplastic compound.

Fire Resistant Cables

Fire Tests
Cables have to be properly designed, manufactured and also tested. Many tests are carried out during manufacturing or as final inspections. Many of them are attended by customers or third part inspectors. The tests are part of R&D, an extremely strategic activity for a Company and this is the reason why CAVICEL has invested in this field. You can find here the main tests concerning the behaviour of cables under fire conditions, and our main test equipments. It is important to verify all required performances and give the customers the full compliance to the requirements. CAVICEL is proud of its own laboratories and customers are always welcome to visit them.

BS 6387
Following tests are carried out to verify if a cable is capable of maintaining circuit integrity under fire condition, fire with water, and fire with mechanical shocks. During the tests the cables are maintained at their rated voltage. Fire Resistance (Cat. A B C S) The cable is exposed to fire at the specified temperature and time.

Fire Tests

IEC 60331, CEI 20-36

Fire Resistance This test is carried out to verify circuit integrity even during a fire. A sample of cable is held on a flame at about 750C for a period of minimum 90 min, under rated voltage. No break or short circuit should occur. The test can also be performed in more severe conditions, up to 1100 C. Fibre optic cables can be tested in same conditions, monitoring the attenuation of the signal of one or more fibres. Classification CEI 20-36/2-1 IEC 60331-21 Electrical cables up to 0,6/1 kV CEI 20-36/2-3 IEC 60331-23 Data cables CEI 20-36/2-5 IEC 60331-25 Fibre optic cables

Smoke Corrosivity This test allows estimation of corrosiveness against metals of gases released when cables burn. Materials composing the cable are burnt into a tubular oven with temperature higher than 935 C. A controlled air flow rate absorbs the generated gases in a specific distilled water solution. pH and conductivity are finally measured.

NF C 32-070
Fire Resistance This test is carried out to verify circuit integrity during a fire. The cable is into a tubular oven with gradually increasing of temperature up to 920C. The cable is stressed by mechanical shocks and subjected to tensile strength.

Storage
Cable drums should be stored so that the drum flanges do not contact cable on another drum.

Battens, where applied, should not be removed from drums until the cables are to be installed. Care should be taken to avoid injury with nails when removing battens. To remove possible plastic foil on cable, do not use sharp tools that could damage cable jacket.

CORRECT

INCORRECT

Cables stored at temperatures which are below those recommended for installation conditions, should not be subjected to any mechanical stress including shocks, impact, bending and torsion. If cables are not fully protected (with battens or plastic foils for example), store should be in a protected area and not weather-beaten. The cable end should be sealed to prevent ingress of moisture during transport and storage.
