Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks ******* 1. a) What is the disadvantage of viscosity index? Explain. b) Is the viscosity of low viscosity index (VI) oils less sensitive to temperature than high VI oils? Discuss. 2. A circular pad hydrostatic bearing has an outside radius of 0.1m and circular recess radius 0f 0.02m. The viscosity of the lubricant used is 30 cP. The oil is supplied to the bearing by a pump at constant flow rate of 20l/min. Calculate the load capacity for a uniform film thickness of 100 m and the percentage increase in load capacity if the film thickness is reduced by 10%. For the same bearing assume now that the oil is supplied by a capillary restrictor, such that the thickness is still 100 m and that the [pressure drops across the capillary from 60MPa to 30MPa. Calculate the load carried by the film again and the percentage increase in load if the film thickness is reduced by 10%. 3. a) Define and discuss eccentricity ratio. b) Of all the parameters controlling hydrodynamic lubrication, which parameter is most easily optimized and therefore left as the design variable? 4. A rectangular slider bearing with pivoted shoe has the following specification: Length of shoe=60mm Width of shoe=55mm Slider speed=5m/s Load=25kN Absolute viscosity =0.012Pa s. Determine (i) minimum film thickness and (ii)power loss due to viscous friction. Neglect side leakage. 1 of 2
