Overall purpose: introduce the five senses by reading a book to students Standards: C.C.S.S. ELA-Literacy.RL.K.10 Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding. Objective: Students will be able to name the five senses and identify the parts of the body used for each sense. Procedures: This book will be read to students during morning meeting. Students typically sit spread out in a circle during morning meeting, but for this lesson I will allow students to sit close to each other, facing me in the rocking chair. First, I will introduce the book to the class by saying the title and the author. Boys and girls we are going to be starting a new unit on the five senses so I brought in a book to share with you today. I will ask the students if they know their five senses already. Boys and girls, do any of us know what the five senses are? A student might respond by saying seeing things, hearing things, smelling, tasting and/or feeling things. If the students have no response, I will say, What if I told you that hearing with our ears was one of our five senses? Can you think of something else that could be one of our senses? Students may respond by saying feeling or smelling or one of the other senses. If not, I will begin reading the book. Ok, lets begin reading our book. Next, I will read the book to the students sitting on the carpet. On page 4, I will stop at the sentence that says, Thats when I see love. I will ask students, What part of our body do we use to see things? Students should answer by saying our eyes. Thats right, we use our eyes. While saying this I will point to my eyes for clarification. Thats our first of five senses. On page 8, I will stop at the sentence that says, Thats when I hear love. I will ask students, What part of our body do we use to hear things? Students should answer by saying our ears. Thats right, our ears. While saying this I will point to my ears. On page 12, I will stop at the sentence that says, Thats when I smell love. I will ask students, What part of our body do we use to smell? Students should answer by saying our nose. On page 15, I will stop at the sentence that says, Thats when I taste love. I will ask students, What part of our body do we use to taste? Students may answer with our tongue or with our mouth I will say that both are acceptable answers. On page 19, I will stop at the sentence that says, Thats when I feel love. I will ask students, What part of our body do we use to feel? This may be tricky for students

Name: ________________________________ because they may know that we can feel different emotions. Students perhaps will know right away that the answer Im looking for is our hands. After reading the book together, I will introduce the activity that they are to do. I will have an activity sheet for students to complete at their desks. Students will fill in blanks of what body parts are used for the senses and what types of activity occur when using the different senses. Materials: The Five Senses of Love book, activity sheets Assessments: I will be able to assess the students during the reading. When I ask what body parts are used for each sense, I will be able to tell if the whole class is understanding or if only a few are understanding. Ill also be able to see that maybe most of the class understands, but a few students need some further clarification. Either right after morning meeting or later in the day, I will have students complete the activity sheets where they will write what parts of the body they use to see, hear, smell, taste and feel different things. For example, a student can write, I use my eyes to see my teacher or I use my ears to listen to my mom and dad. Differentiation: I will notice that a more advanced student will be able to complete the entire activity sheet with ease. Lower students will take more time to complete it, and may leave some blanks. Future Connections: It is important for students to know what the five senses are and how we use each one every day and all of the time. We use our five senses to understand our surroundings, so it is essential for the future of students.
