ORAL APPROACH AND SITUATIONAL LANGUAGE TEACHING It was developed by British applied linguists from the 1930s to 1960s.

The impact of this approach has been long-lasting and it has shaped the design of many widely used textbooks for the teaching of English as a second language (ESL). One of the most successful was Streamline English (Hartley and Viney , 1978), it reflected the Situational Language Teaching.(Another book was Access to English). Two of the leaders in this movement were Harold Palmer and A.S.Hornby (prominent linguists in 20th century language teaching). They attempted to develop a more scientific foundation for an oral approach to teaching English than the evidenced in the Direct Method. The result was a systematic study of the principles and procedures that could be applied to the selection and organization of the contentof a language course. The impetus for this research came from two sides: -There was a general consensus that vocabulary was one of the most important aspects of foreign language teaching. -A second influence was the increased emphasis on reading skils as the goal of foreign language study in some countries.
