Study Guide for Plate Tectonics

Name:

Date:

Period:_________

1. Continental crust consists mainly of granite. 2. Oceanic crust consists mainly of basalt 3. Oceanic crust or continental crust, which one is more dense? oceanic. 4. Wegenerss theory of continental drift was rejected because he could not explain what forces move the continents. (SPELLING COUNTS) 5. The name of the process and theory involving the formation, movement, and subduction of the Earths plates is called PLATE TECTONICS 6. The process by which oceanic crust sinks beneath trenches is called subduction. 7. Earths lithosphere is broken into sections called plates. 8. Geologists study the forces that shape planet Earth. What does geo mean? earth. 9. The name of the last super continent was pangaea. It began to break apart 225 million years ago. (SPELLING COUNTS) 10. A transform boundary is a place where two plates slip past each other. 11. An example of this type of boundary is san andres fault 12. A divergent boundary is a place where two plates move away from each other. 13. An example of this type of boundary is mor 14. A convergent boundary is a place where two plates are moving toward each other. 15. An example of this type of boundary is marinas trench. 16. The process of mountain building occurs at this type of boundary convergent. 17. A rift valley forms along a divergent boundary on land. 18. As the crust moves away from the MOR, it cools and become more dence (more or less) dense. 19. What is the major difference between the outer and inner core? The outer core is licuid and convects and the inner core is solid and doesnt convect BE SPECIFIC 20. The lithosphere is made up of the crust and the very top part of the mantle.

Building Vocabulary

Match each term with its denition by writing the letter of the correct denition on the line beside the term in the left column. 21. a basalt 22. g asthenosphere 23. e crust 24. c outer core 25. d lithosphere 26. b pressure 27. f seismic waves a. a rock that makes up much of the ocean floor b. the force pushing on a surface or area c. the layer made up of liquid iron d. the crust and uppermost part of the mantle e. outer rind of rock f. a wave produced by an earthquake g. soft layer of rock in the mantle

28. 14. Diagram the layers of the earth (include the lithosphere, asthenosphere, mesosphere, outer core, and inner core. Be sure and label the layers where convection currents occur.

29. BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN CONVECTION CURRENTS WITH DENSITY, KE, AND MOLECULES. INCLUDE WHEN CONVECTION CURRENTS WILL STOP. The first step of a convection current is when the molecules get heated and rise and spread out. Once the molecules start to get dencer they spread out further. Finnaly the molecules get so dence they loose there ke and gain density and drop, after the molecules get pulled back to the heat and repeat the cycle. Convection currents will stop when the heat and the molecules are the same temp.xxx x
