Meeting at Night By Robert Browning (1812-1889)

The grey sea and the long black land; And the yellow half-moon large and low; And the startled little waves that leap In fiery ringlets from their sleep, As I gain the cove with pushing prow, And quench its speed i' the slushy sand. Then a mile of warm sea-scented beach; Three fields to cross till a farm appears; A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch And blue spurt of a lighted match, And a voice less loud, through its joys and fears, Than the two hearts beating each to each!

IMAGERY ANALYSIS KINDS Kinds is the first type of imagery which consists of simile, metaphor, and personification. Based on the poem above, simile does not appear, but there are some lines that are included personification. They are in stanza 1 line 3 (And the startled little waves that leap), stanza 1 line 4 (In fiery ringlets from their sleep),and stanza 2 line 2 (Three fields to cross till a farm appears). As we know that leap, their sleep, and cross are the character/activity in human form, but in this case, they are used to character/activity for inanimate object. leap is used to describe the activity of the startled little waves, their sleep is used to describe the character of fiery ringlets, and to cross is used to describe the activity of three fields.

Besides personification, there is also metaphor in this poem which is in the last line of stanza 2 (Than the two hearts beating each to each!). As we know that the two hearts that the poet means is two persons who are falling in love each other because after I read the poem, I realize that the main point of the poem is describing how the feeling when someone falls in love. TYPE Type is the second type of imagery which consists of visual, auditory, and tactile. Based on the poem above, the visual type in imagery side is from stanza 1 line 1 ( The grey sea and the long black land), stanza 1 line 2 (And the yellow half-moon large and low ), and stanza 2 line 4 (And blue spurt of a lighted match). Grey sea, long black land, yellow half-moon large and low, blue spurt, and lighted match are the nouns that can be seen by eyes. That is why according to my opinion they are visual type in imagery side. Besides that, there is also auditory type. In my opinion, it can be proven from the poem in stanza 2 line 3 (A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch), and stanza 2 line 5 ( And a voice less loud, through its joys and fears,). As we know that the activity of a tap at the pane and the less loud of voice can be felt by ear which in this case is called auditory type. For the other type is tactile type which including sense and feeler. According to my opinion, the tactile type is in the stanza 2 line 1 (Then a mile of warm sea-scented beach;), stanza 2 line 5 (And a voice less loud, through its joys and fears,), and last line in stanza 2 (Than the two hearts beating each to each !). As we know that the sense of warm can be felt by our skin (feeler) and through its joys and fears means the opposite feeling which most of people when they are falling in love feel it. Besides that, two hearts beating each to each also can happen when two persons/person fall/s in love. All in all, this poem is describing a sense of love.
