When I would muse in boyhood By A.E. Housman When I would muse in boyhood The wild green woods among, And nurse resolves and fancies Because the world was young, It was not foes to conquer, Nor sweethearts to be kind, But it was friends to die for That I would seek and find. I sought them and I found them, The sure, the straight, the brave, The hearts I lost my own to, The souls I could not save. They braced their belts around them, They crossed in ships the sea, They sought and found six feet of ground, And there they died for me. The Definitions of Poetry : 1. Loveliest of trees, the cherry now By A.E. Housman ( 1859-1936 ) Loveliest of trees, the cherry now Is hung with bloom along the bough, And stands about the woodland ride Wearing white for Eastertide. Now, of my three score years and ten, Twenty will not come again, And take from seventy springs a score, It only leaves me fifty more. And since to look at things in bloom Fifty springs are little room, About the woodlands I will go To see the cherry hung with snow. Illustration a. First stanza In my opinion, the first stanza means that there is a cherry tree in a forest which according to Housman it is the most beautiful tree than the others, especially when the snow covers it. b. Second stanza It means that Housman assumed that his life for 70 years. Now he is almost in 30 years old and he argued that his life is still for fifty years again. c. Third stanza I think that he has opinion that fifty years is only in a while, so it will be a satisfy time as beautiful as cherry tree with snow if he uses the time to do something well. There is no contrast in this poem
