Information

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (i.e. of music magazines)

The masthead I created for my magazine followed the conventions of a music magazine as it was the largest font on the page and however instead of traditionally putting the masthead in the top left hand corner (as with most magazines) I placed it in the middle to create a centralised feel to the page. I followed conventions and placed the masthead at the top of the magazine to make it immediately recognisable on a magazine shelf; I used the font impact for the mastheads to give a clear, bold and elegant feel. I choose the title of FADE for my magazine because it is a music magazine convention, music magazines have names associated with music; Q, Kerrang, Pop and NME. It is a word that associates with music for example when the music fades in or out. It is also a short catchy title to attract the audience which are pop fans to buy the magazine. I decided to choose the masthead colour to be a light pink as this would appeal to my target market of 15-25 year old women. The page layout I have chosen is an E model. I choose this because traditionally pop magazine covers are cluttered. This layout is cluttered as it has texts on both sides of the cover however I wanted to keep a clean and simple feel with my magazine. The graphology used is a mid-shot and close up of my model Ellie, I used this because she is the pop artist for my magazine. The costumes I decided to style her with were 1950s style brightly coloured dress. Traditionally pop artists wear bright coloured clothes. For example one direction on the front cover of Billboard. So I used that idea and styled Ellie in bright pastel girly colours. However the model I choose was not a stereotypically pop artist. Instead of aiming my magazine at mainstream pop I went for the more retro pop market. Taking the pictures of Ellie was hard as I have never done any photography before. It took me a while to get the lighting right as I had to shoot Ellie twice. I decided to do a second photo shoot of Ellie because the outfits I choose on the first photo shoot didnt go with the respected retro pop look I was going for. So in the second photo shoot I dressed Ellie in clothing that covered up a lot of her body this is because I was aiming my model to more the audience that like a more respected style of pop. The type of shot and the way I positioned Ellie would more likely be shown in fashion magazines such as Vogue, Elle or Wonderland instead of music magazines such as NME and Q. The camera work I used was a simple mid shot close up of her. I used this because traditionally on a music magazine they have a portrait of the person who is most famous, or features a lot in that particular magazine. So I used this and put a portrait of Ellie on the cover. The way I positioned Ellie was her sitting down with a strong posture and her handing linked resting on her lap. This was a much more sophisticated pose than the stereotypical pose of a pop magazine which would be an action shot for example the artist jumping. The reason I choose Ellie to be my model because she is a pretty and pulls of the sweetness and girly look I was going for. The fonts I decided to use were big and bold. This was because in other music magazines the fonts they used were bold and eye catching. This obviously

works as a convention as most magazines use this as a base. The genre of my magazine is pop. However it is not mainstream pop, it is more of an alternative/respected style of pop. So the fairly cluttered cover suggests that the magazine is the genre of pop. The double page spread layout was based on a double page spread from the magazine Wonderland. Wonderland is a respected magazine which contains culture, fashion and music. This is what I was going for in my magazine. This is because the target market of women 15-25 are not only just interested in the music but instead the fashion as well. My artist is represented as a bright cheerful and happy girl who wants to do well in the music industry. This also associates with the genre of pop as most pop artists tend to be portrayed as happy and bubbly. The colour scheme is a baby pink colour as my target audience is teenage girls. This can give the magazine a little more of a girly feel.
