Jeremiah 30:17 by Rev. Justin Gung, Minister of Families & Young Adults
If you ever drive through Franklin, Tennessee, you're bound to see a building that will turn your head. An old industrial plant, it was once the proud home of Dortch Stove Works. In its day, it was the most modern stove plant in America! But modern became old, old became vacant, and vacant became decayed. In fact, it sat idle for years, falling into such disrepair that, when Calvin Lehew purchased it, people laughed. Undaunted, Lehew, a man with both vision and gumption, worked tirelessly to give the building new life and purpose. Today, the space is abuzz with fine restaurants, unique stores, an art gallery, a theater, and even an animal rescue shelter. This one-of-a-kind complex is aptly named The Factory. What Calvin Lehew did was take an old, beat-up factory that had presumably seen its best days and restore it; though its outer shell looks much the same, its interior is completely new. We all know the stress and strain of modern life and its deleterious effects on the soul. Pay enough tuition in the School of Hard Knocks and your soul can become just like that old industrial plant in Franklin - empty, tired, beat-up, run down, even ruined. Wouldn't it be great if each of us had our own Calvin Lehew? Though our outer shell might look the same, wouldn't it be great for our interior to be made new? In a word, wouldn't it be great to be restored? Special small groups present in the church aim to do just that - restore folks to who they are meant to be in Jesus Christ. They're a part of an outreach ministry of the Y.M.C.A. called Restore and they meet at the church on Thursday night. These small groups are "intimate communities of hope and healing" in which folks can find help for all sorts of ailments of the soul anxiety, grief, relational stress, self-esteem issues, hopelessness, and more. In Restore, the fellowship is deep, the teaching is powerful, and the change is lasting. Don't believe me? Perhaps it's best to hear from some of the church members involved in Restore. Says one: "Participating in a Restore Ministries small group helped to set in motion for me a spiritual rebirth and ever-deepening journey with our living, loving God. If your soul is seeking change or searching for more, I challenge you to step into a Journey to Freedom small group!" Says another: "Restore classes have given me the ability to better understand where my feelings are coming from and to distinguish my feelings from how I act. These skills are great for communication with my spouse and others." Finally, Rich Sanderson, who serves on the board of Restore, says, "There are so many in need who simply do not realize how much better their lives can be. Restore small groups allow us to realize that we are not alone. Restore can be the answer for many." Curious? Give Restore a try! What's there to lose? These short-term small groups only last a season, but the benefits last a lifetime. For more information, contact the Green Hills Y.M.C.A., Rich Sanderson, or me. Who knows? You may be just one step away from realizing the promise of Jeremiah 30:17 - "They have called you an outcast: 'It is Zion, for whom no one cares!' But I, the Lord, will heal your wounds and restore you to health."

Reservations must be made in advance - contact Mary Welsh Owen at mwowen@brookdaleliving.com. If you would like to donate some flowers from your garden to help decorate the event, please contact Sarah Drury at 383-6551 or sarahcampbelldrury@gmail.com.

Extension Chords by Michael Graham, Director of Music Ministry

Singing is simply an extension of speech. What I mean by that is this. If you take any syllable and extend it for a few seconds, it results in a discernible pitch. Try it. It may sound a little strange, but you'll get the point. In a sense, it is taking a normal part of our lives- speaking, and stretching it into something special- singing. Extending our reach to include the marginalized, the unpopular, the disenfranchised, can not only help others, but also aid us in our own Christian growth.

We Woodmonters are now in our yearly stewardship campaign. Take some time to prayerfully consider your "norm" and see if you can extend your giving to honor God and continue the wonderful ministries of Woodmont Christian Lots of instruments started with humble beginnings and Church. We need your help! We are holding a Bake Sale on Mother's Day, May 12th. We are looking for bakers of all kinds who can bake cakes, cookies or cupcakes. These will be sold along with Guatemalan coffee straight from San Lucas Toliman! Thanks to you bakers last year, we raised the fund to build two new homes in Guatemala. Construction is underway! In summer 2014, we plan to send our youth to see the homes and visit the families! In addition, they will see the other families that Woodmont members are generously sponsoring. We believe these people to people connections change the lives of our youth, as well as the lives of those Guatemalan families. If you can help us with baking, we would be very grateful. Cakes of all flavors are welcome, along with cookies and cupcakes. Most items are sold in "family size servings" (i.e. whole cakes, dozen cookies). We also sell a limited number of single serving offerings in the children's area. All items need to be dropped off at the Woodmont warming kitchen by noon on Saturday May 11. A team of people will wrap the cakes for sale that Saturday.
