How to Bypass or Remove a BIOS Password

A BIOS password is a protection measure that can be used to stop someone powering up a computer system or making changes in some of the computers most sensitive areas. Many big name computer manufacturers such as Dell and HP lock the customers out of this area because they dont want the customer changing anything and potentially damaging the machine (which the manufacturer may have to warranty). However, when someone like a computer technician or hardware enthusiast needs to make some hardware changes to the computer, they will need to access the BIOS. Here are some methods to be a bios password cracker, removing a BIOS password. NOTE: Do not try to guess the password on a passworded Hard Drive. 3 wrong guesses will often result in the information on the hard drive being lost forever. How to Bypass or Remove a BIOS Password by Removing the CMOS Battery: The simplest way to remove a BIOS password is to simply remove the CMOS battery. A computer will remember its settings and keep the time even when it is turned off and unplugged because these parts are powered by small battery inside the computer called a CMOS battery. If we pull out this battery, the computer will forget alot of its hardware settings, including its BIOS password. This should not be performed on Laptops if you are not experienced working with laptop hardware. Anyway, open up the computer case using a screw driver and locate the flat, circular and metallic CMOS battery. It should look something like the picture to the right. Some computers have this part standing upright. Once you have located it, observe how the latches are holding it. There are many different ways to remove a CMOS battery but the most common way on newer computers can be seen in the picture below. Make sure to power down the computer, unplug the power cables and unplug any USB devices if they are powered. The computer must not be able to get power from anywhere for this to work. Take out the CMOS battery and wait 10 25 minutes before putting it back in. The reason for this wait is because the computer can still store power in its capacitors even though everything is unplugged. The waiting period allows enough time for them to discharge. Plug everything back in, power up the computer and enter the BIOS again. If everything went well there should be no more password. In some cases, if you get weird error messages during bootup now, you will need to goto Load BIOS Defaults in BIOS and save the changes to fix them. If this method didnt work, try one of the methods below. How to Bypass or Remove a BIOS Password using Software: !BIOS is a freeware utility which is designed to be a whole BIOS and security suite. It has the ability to decrypt the passwords used in some of the most common BIOS makes such as Award, Phoenix, American Megatrends, IMB etc.. It also has the ability to brute force the password (known as blasters). However, this method is dangerous and can result in some unexpected and unwanted results. Note: Because of this applications password cracking abilities, some antivirus software may report it as a virus/trojan. This is a false positive. To start using !BIOS, reboot your computer and take note of the BIOS type and version you are running. For example, If your motherboard uses Award BIOS you should look for the text Award Medallion BIOS 6.0 or something similar. Download !BIOS from here and save it to your desktop. Then, open a DOS command windows by going to Start > Run and type: cmd

Once you see a black screen in front of you, type: cd desk top You should now see something like: C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Desk top> Now type the name of the file you just downloaded, if you havent changed the name just type in: bios320.exe

Use the down arrow and choose Crackers and then press the right arrow. Using the up and down arrows, select the BIOS that the motherboard is using and press Enter. You should now see a menu asking what you want to crack, in most cases its the Supervisor or System Passwords you want to crack, so press the 1 k ey on your k eyboard. It will then show you another menu asking how you want it to be cracked. Option 1 is pretty good so try that first by pressing the 1 key on your keyboard. You should now have your BIOS password. Reboot the computer, enter the BIOS and try it out. How to Bypass or Remove a BIOS Password using the manufacturer backdoor password: On many computers (especially old ones), computer manufacturers build in backdoor passwords for their own technicians to use so they can access the BIOS when the hardware is being serviced. Here are some of the ones that have been reported. You may need to try quite a few passwords before you find one that works These passwords are CaSe SeNsItIve. AMI BIOS Backdoor Passwords: A.M.I. Just find the CMOS jumper(its almost always near the battery), Then move it over for about five seconds Then move it back, and Your BIOS will be reset. This is much faster than waiting for all the power to drain. Some newer boards even have a button instead of a jumper.

wooosh says: these backdoor passwords didnt work for me. i have a dell inspiron 1100 and have had a load of problems trying to reboot windows xp onto it. there isnt enuff space to do this and have been trying to get it to use the disk first on install but as it is obviously set different then i cant get it to run unless i can change the boot path. have tried taking the casinbg off to attempt the battery removal but cant do that as need a special topol. any help?

chad says: dont remove the battery, JP14 has a jumper on pin 1 and 2, remove jumper and install on pin 2 and 3 for 3 seconds and then reinstall onto pin 1 and 2. The CMOS pw is now reset.

Now the hd has crashed, i purchased a new one, but am locked out by an admin pw the prev owner installed. Dell was willing to send me start up cds and transfer ownership, but thats as much cooperation as they will give. Ive not yet found a pw that works. Any suggestions?Ive also replaced the battery, the cord, and the adapter for the motherboard. Dell is telling me Ill have to buy a new motherboard. Ebay is of no assistance either due to the time that has passed. I never realized til the harddrive went down that there was a admin pw. Thanks.

Administrator says: Seems people are getting confused with hard drive passwords and BIOS passwords. If the password is on the hard drive, these methods wont help. In fact, your options are very very few if its a hard drive password. For BIOS passwords, removing the battery fixes 90% of them.

Tim Bob says: I shall try and help thos of you that have got a bit mixed up. The BIOS/CMOS password can be reset most of the time by just taking out the battery from the motherboard for a few hours, sometimes only 15 mins. This can be a bit tricky on a laptop, so be careful. Some of you have mentioned getting a meassage that goes something like this, THIS COMPUTER SYSTEM IS PROTECTED BY A PASSWORD AUTHENTICATION SYSTEM.etc.etc. This is a HARD DRIVE password stored in the boot sector, NOT a BIOS/CMOS password. I so far have only found one thing that works, and not every time mind. If you have acces to another PC/Laptop, download and install the most current version of Window Washer. I find this a good program for keeping your temp files in check as you can set it to delete them every time you exit your internet browser. Youll be amazed at how much space youve saved, just after a few days. Anyway, the section you want is on tab on the left hand side of the window marked System Eraser. This will show you, in 2 easy steps, how to make an Eraser boot disk/cd. This disk/cd will COMPLETELY erase the hard drive of any system that you boot it in, and hey presto, you have an almost-out-ofthe-factory hard drive. Remember, this is an erasing program, NOT a formatting program, so you will still need to format the drive after, as it will COMPLETELY erase EVERYTHING. Also, if you have sensitive data on the hard drive that you are going to erase, you might want to consider setting it to the max amount of passes, around 35!! This will almost ensure that NO Delete Retrievel program will be able to get it back. This process may take severall hours to a couple of days, depending on the size of the drive. This has worked for me around 85% of the time, hope it works for you too.

Andy says: Hi em why go to all that trouble? Just flash the bios and it resets to default simple enough to do switch of and unplug computer. Open side case / locate the bios jumper on the MB/ generally theres three pins the jumpre will cover two. Change it so it covers the one that isnt and the center pin. Turn on computer. leave for about 5 seconds. turn off computer and unplug. reset bios jumper back to where it was. turn on computer and access bios. simple enough no backdoors, no software and no messing with cmos batteries although the latter does work on most newer machines flashing the bios though is probably the oldest and easiest method to do a bios reset.. As to the other chap with the password problem? slave the drive into another computer/recover data/format the drive password is gone as is anything on the drive/refit (as a master) and re-install.
seriously guys this is computers first grade ffs.

I have tried all the methods on the web, Ive tried parallet port loopback, keydisk,operate the whole laptop out into pieces and remove the cmos battery cable. There are 2 small green batteries soldered together, laptop PC is so much different than a desktop PC, the way that Andy described is so easy for a desktop PC or some laptops, but it did not work in my case where I have this Laptop M35-S320 I have tried to re-flash the BIOS, but it wont let me because its not even pass the stupid BIOS password screen before it can detects any floppy drive or bootable device. I know theres a way to short out the jumper or EPROM jumper, but I could not find this on the laptop motherboard, maybe it is somewhere that I couldnt see it yet. If anyone has a solution to this, please help.

I took out the battery for about 6 hours, but that didnt work. Not sure who made the motherboard so I cant find the jumpers on it. The old password doesnt work, nor does hitting enter or right alt + enter or del + enter. Ive also tried all backdoor bios password I could find online. Clearing the cmos doesnt do any good either, it just erased date and time settings, but not the password request. Calling HP customer support was total waste of time and money, too. Find the files you want, and copy them to the cd. Maybe you could use a friends computer. My sony vaio laptop hard drive is on the right side with one screw and a slide latch, then pull it out. Take it out of the case and put it in the usb case, and follow insts they send. Photos are very important. Hope is answers your problem..God Bless, Ed goeking

I tried it on this laptop, it didnt work but it does apparently work on others. You have to be able to boot into windows or linux so it might not be so useful. Had these problems before with companys who had their employees fired but not knowing the system passwords of the laptops. And the ex-employee did not want to tell it. So they had to replace all the system boards under no warranty $$$. Some laptops were only 2 months old. Removing the CMOS battery works for the BIOS password but not for System Power up password.

Brien says: I have been reading all of the Q and As and I have to say this guy Kyle is a real first grade tech. First off he forgot that not everyone is as adept at computers as others. And if he would have continued to read he would have noticed everyone is speaking mostly on LAPTOP computers not a HOME pc. As fas as this being elementary level, by far also not true. I have an associate degree in Computer Science and many cert. and also I am emplyed by a firm that deals with things of this nature, and this is by far not elementary. How-ever another common fix that he forgot to mention is that you can short out the admin pass stored on the EEPROM setting, which is what HP is notoriuos for, simply by unplugging the EEPROM board and the CMOS (not bios by the way KYLE) and depressing the power button for a few seconds. If it doesnt work that way then you can also try shorting out the cmos password by touching the CMOS battery tips on the board that the battery plugs into to a seperate grounded peice of metal. Not aluminum or brass, it has to be metal. You can usually find a piece real close to the CMOS battery plug-in. Hope the info was helpful. Thanks

Firstly Battery removal will work if the cmos password was set up by a user after it has left the factory. Second, you can flash, restore to original, trip the jumpers as many times as you want and it will have absolutely no effect if the password was set up in the original bios by the manufacturer. Simply because it is protected as the rest of the base setup software is. The best you could do is to retrieve the password that has been created. This method will work for most secured passwords. Firstly what you need is a floppy drive and 2 blank disks. You will need to create a Win98 boot disk. You will need to download (AWARDBFD.exe) Search google for it, the one on Drivers Guide is a good copy. http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=134029&action=filfo&t=1 Extract that zip onto the other blank 3.5 floppy disk. My guess is your BIOS is set to start Hard drive before CD rom so, disconnect the hard drive and the BIOS will naturally look for the next bootable device. Boot your system with the Win98 Startup Disk. When you have the prompt (Make sure its the A:/) or drive letter of your floppy, insert the AWARD disk and then type AWARDBPF.exe Hey Presto, you will see both user and administrator passwords. Write them down and then enter Setup and type the Administrator Password Hope this helps :)

keyboard easy, carefully popped the cover over the power button/hinges and unscrewed the keyboard and poped it out of place. pushed battery carefully to the heavy side of the plastic and lift and it fell out of place. anyway i called dell and they charge. i have been reading googled. and found out they give you a maser password from the information that comes written on your laptop. i would use a software to crack it except the few i found are questionable at best or charge. there are no jumbers to reset and leave very few options to recover from any of the bois password lock outs. i am not paying the fellow if i mess this up so shorting out anything is out of the question. i get that idiots out there steal and such. so i guess if i am to get the answer i have to pay and pass the buck or let go of this one. my puplic email is snowcatman@yahoo.com sorry i dont have the questions answered but someone out there does. i have like 2 of these in my closet and would love to fix them. but i want to get passed the password thing first. thank you

This is for Desktop Computers only. Laptops have an eeprom chip and it retains its memory for a long time. EEPROMS are also found in tvs etc. you can unplug your tv from the wall and leave it sit for a long time but the eeprom chip keeps its memory. Another site (I forget where) said they sell the dell software thats used by the dell service centers to unlock the password.

The laptop was originally owned by a hospital, passed via auction to an employee, which then was passed to her daughter. Neither of them can remember either of the passwords. Ive yet to get the cover off to force the reset of the Bios (as the screws in this thing have damaged two of my screwdrivers) and are very small. I plan to format the hard drive with Linux once I can get past the bios (as it wont boot to an external drive/flash drive/usb drive). Ill post an update here on how this went. (may also link some images of this case and its cmos battery location and such) Randy

Aeontechnology says: I have the Answer for all who need a password or CMOS password or hard drive passwords. (For windows only!) Desktop are as follows. If the BIOS is password protected, Like in previous posts, All you have to do is remove the CMOS battery and reset the jumper. Laptops on the other hand my be a little more difficult. Most can be recovered my just removing the CMOS battery for 30min others need a little to a lot more work. Some as above have master passwords that can reset to OEM. Some like most dells require you to call dell for them to try and generate a password for you if the password fails you will be required to send to dell for them to replace the motherboard because of the BIOS backup chip located on the motherboard right below the CPU (or if you are truly gifted replacing this chip yourself). If your under warranty then your fine, If the CPU was given to you just transfer the ownership on dells support website and your fine, dell will be happy to replace the board and you are only out 15 days. But if you dont have a warranty it will cost you about $50 to acquire a temp warranty so you can get the same service. Those who dont want to pay or have gotten there laptop by ill gotten gains are S,O,L, unless you find a way to replace the motherboard or chip. As for all hard drive passwords on desktops and laptops, you have two option, a program that creates its own BIOS to format the hard drive like SecurErase 8 or the ever famous password recovery tools that people like to use ( keep in mind that those programs need the windows BIOS to create there own so if the BIOS is locked your S.O.L. As for the second way just use a legit OS and reformat the hard drive and you will be back to square one. but remember that some ways you will loose all data and others you just will recover your lost password. I hope this was somewhat helpful to those dont know or would like some light shed on this subject!

Reboot with out the battery pack press F2 or what ever key you need to press as laptop boots up key to access Bios , bingo your in . you dont need all these fancy programs , cracks etc . one word do this at your own peril , but its always worked for me .

Now wait for a few seconds and then again remove the jumper and join the center pin to left pin. Make sure to turn the PC off before opening the cabinet and resetting the jumper. B. called an old windows get your files out re-format with any windows you want format all old windows so they dont keep extra space on your hard drive this works with windows 7 is well i hope this helps

This system is designed to help stop thieft, the pass word is in fact a secondary bios password but is in fact not written to the bios chip but rather is stored on a special chip and not as some have claimed stored on the boot sector of the HDD. Take care in what advice you follow as there aqre a great many fools who think because they know the difference between a laptop and a desktop, think they are a tech, if you are not carefull you can stuff your comp totaly

Andrew Brent says: Unfortunately these dont seem to work on my Dell laptop, after googling for a bit I found loads of companies offering password recovery services but ended up using someone called The Password Doctor http://www.thepassworddoctor.com the passwords displayed on screen after paying $20, the cheapest and quickest I could find as all of the other sites said they would take 1-24 hours to send the password.
