INDUSTRY PROFILE INTRODUCTION


India is today the second largest producer of cement in world with an installedcapacity of close to 155 million tonnes per year. 95 % is consumed domestically andonly 5% is exported. Demand is growing at more than 10 % per annum. More than90 % of production comes from large cement plants. There are a total of 130 large andmore than 350 small cement manufacturing units in the country. More than 80% of the cement-manufacturing units use modern environment friendly dry proces

Features of cement:
A large amount of blended cement, special cement, and shaft kiln manufactured cement is produced in China. These cements form the basis for China's cement standards. These standards have many special features and constitute a unique cement standard system. The standard cements are divided into three groups: common cement, special performance cement, and special purpose cement. As common cements, which include ordinary portland cement, portland blast-furnace cement, portland pozzolana cement, and portland composite slag cement, etc., the required and allowable blended materials incorporated in their specifications are somewhat like those in the European cement standard EN V 197, but some kinds of metallurgical slags are allowed into composite portland cement to make good use of industrial wastes, and a series of strength grades (including type R, which have higher early strength criteria) are stipulated for satisfying the various technical level of cement production and the different construction requirements. As to the special performance cement group, there are several series of cements such as portland cement, aluminatc cement, sulfo-aluminate cement, and ferro-aluminate cement, etc. The specifications for these cements are characteristic of their performance requirements: moderate-heat portland cement stipulates the criteria for heat of hydration; rapid-hardening aluminate cement defines criteria for strength within three days; expansive sulfo-aluminate cement requires criteria for rate of expansion; and self-stressing ferro-aluminate cements need criteria for self-stressing values, etc. In addition, oil well cement and masonry cement, etc., belong in the special purpose cement group. A graphical standards system is presented which includes fundamental standards, product standards, and test method standards.

Owing to the different strength of the test methods, the cement strength value cannot be compared between different countries. The author suggests an international cooperative test program be organized for establishing the interrelation of mortar strength between different testing methods and the ISO method to facilitate international trade and to exchange information.

CHAPTER -2 COMPANY PROFILE

COMPANY PROFILE:
OCL India Limited is the flag ship company of 'Dalmia Group' of companies, set up and operating from eastern India. Sjt. Jaidayalji Dalmia, an industrialist of farsighted vision set up a cement plant at Rajgangpur during 1950-51 at the request of Government of Odisha to manufacture super grade cement for use in the construction of the prestigious Hirakud Dam. Orissa cement Ltd was incorporated on 11.10.1949 and its cement plant went on steam during 1952. The company changed its name from Orissa Cement Ltd to OCL India Limited on 15.01.1996 to reflect its multifarious activities. Presently the equity shares of the Company having face value of Rs.2/-each are listed on National Stock Exchange Limited and Bombay Stock Exchange Limited. Established in 1932 with a sugar factory, the Dalmia groups gradually diversified into a broad spectrum of activities and were involved in many pioneering ventures.

DIVISIONS OF OCL INDIA LIMITED: (a) Cement Division (b) Refractory Division & Common Departments However the following divisions are operated significantly at OCL INDIA LIMITED which are as follows-: (a) Cement Division-:

OCL's Cement Plant is one of the most modern dry process cement plants in India. Konark brand cement manufactured by OCL is the market leader in the State of Odisha and has emerged as a brand synonym of premium quality cement. Presently its installed capacity for the factories located at Rajgangpur Cement Works & Kapilas Cement Works is 5.35 Million Tonne per annum. Keeping a steady progress with time and technology, OCL has produced the first clinker through modernized and fully automated dry process plant in 1988 and further enhanced its installed capacity by adding its 2nd clinkerization unit in 2009. In the early fifties OCL has installed four numbers of Ball mills of FL Smidth for cement grinding purpose. Later on, to keep pace with the technological advancement and facilitating manufacture of blended cement, three giant Vertical Roller Mills with combined and separate grinding systems were installed during the period of 1997 to 2005. To ensure easy availability and timely supply of cement to the customers in the coastal area of Odisha, a split level cement grinding unit Kapilas Cement Works was set up near Cuttack in 2008.

(b)Refractory Division-:
OCL INDIA LIMITED, formerly "Orissa Cement Limited" and better known as "OCL" started producing Refractories in 1954. Over the years, it has become one of the largest and well-equipped state of the art Refractory plants in India covering a wide range of products for use in the Ferrous & the non-ferrous Industries. Its customer base spreads from iron and steel to cement, aluminum, glass, copper, chemicals and hydrocarbon industries.

Different refractory products made by OCL are-:


*Silica Refractories for Coke Ovens, High Temperature Blast Furnace Stoves and Glass Industries. *High Alumina Refractories for Blast Furnace Stoves. *Basic Refractories. *Magnesia Carbon bricks. *Continuous Casting Refractories. *New generation high performance Castable and Precast Blocks for various applications. *Purging Refractories. *Slide gate Refractories. OCL happens to be the first Refractory Company in India to be certified under ISO 9001, by RWTUV of Germany in 1994 version for all range of its products. And now it is updated to an Integrated management system comprising of ISO9001: 2008, ISO 14001:2004 & OHSAS 18001: 2007 certification from RWTUV, West Germany. OCL today boasts of a full-fledged in-house R&D Wing with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. Besides, it has also promoted an independent R&D centre - DALMIA INSTITUTE OF SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH.

Technical Collaboration-:
*Starting with initial technical fragmentation from Dr. C. Otto and CO, Germany OCL subsequently entered into collaboration with General Refractories of USA for expansion of its factory and enlarging of the products range.The main objective of this collaboration integrating its operations with the global market. *Secondly OCL have continued its involvement with the world leaders of refractory technology and entered into collaboration with T.Y.K. CORPORATION of Japan for manufacture of magnesia carbon bricks, new generation castables, precast blocks, continuous casting Refractories, alumina silicon carbide carbon and alumina magnesia carbon Refractorys.

5:- To introduce safety awareness amongst all its employees including workers,staff and executives through education,training and other means. 6:- To upgarde the skills of staffs and executives by training with an objective of improvement in safety standards. 7:- To make adequate funds available for promotion of safety. 8:- To give an important place to satisfy in the annual operation planning in all units of the company.

ENVIRONMENTAL,OCCUPATIONAL & HEALTH POLICY:OCL INDIA LIMITED (Cement Division), Rajgangpur ,Orissa engaged in Captive Mining of Limestone and manufacturing of cement are continually improve performance of OCLs environment and Occupational Health and Safety Management system for sustainable development. The OCL INDIA LIMITED will achieve this by:1:- Integrating EHS criteria in all our planning & operational activities. 2:- Prevention,minimization and control of workplace injury,ill health and pollution. 3:- Complying with Legislation and other requirement applicable to us and which we subscribe. 4:- Communication of EHS policy to all our employees and otherinterested party. 5:- Strengthening competence & EHS awareness of employees & business associated through continuous training. 6:- Optimization of resources, particularly raw materials,water,fual & power. 7:- Reclamation & Rehabilitation of mined out areas by utilization of solid waste & develop green belt in the area. 8:- Promote safe behavior and practices to nurture and sustain safe and healty work environment. 9:- Establish the EHS objectives and review periodically to achieve continual improvement.

PRODUCT PROFILE
Definition of Cement:

In General is a generic name for powered material which initially have plastic flow when mixed with water but from solid structure on several hours with varying degree of strength & bonding properties which continue to improve with age.

Cement is a binding material. Earlier the cement was used as a binding material. Cement is one of the strongest binding materials with long life. The weathering effect on cement is very low. For manufacturing of cement the basic raw materials is limestone (calcium carbonate). The limestone used in manufacturing of cement should have at least 80% purity.

Types of Cement

1. BIS covers 14 types of cement. 2. 9s are the commercially produced in India. 3. Major Cements are OPC, PPS, & PSC. Different types of cement that are produced in India are Ordinary Portland cement (OPC): OPC, popularly known as grey cement, has 95 per cent clinker and 5 percent gypsum and other materials. It accounts for 70 per cent of the total consumption. Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC): PPC has 80 per cent clinker, 15 per cent pozzolana and 5 per cent gypsum and accounts for 18 per cent of the total cement consumption. It is manufactured because it uses fly ash/burnt clay/coal waste as the main ingredient. White Cement:

White cement is basically OPC - clinker using fuel oil (instead of coal) with iron oxide content below 0.4 per cent to ensure whiteness. A special cooling technique is used in its production. It is used to enhance aesthetic value in tiles and flooring. White cement is much more expensive than grey cement. Portland Blast Furnace Slag Cement (PBFSC): PBFSC consists of 45 per cent clinker, 50 per cent blast furnace slag and 5 per cent gypsum and accounts for 10 per cent of the total cement consumed. It has a heat of hydration even lower than PPC and is generally used in the construction of dams and similar massive constructions. Specialized Cement: Oil Well Cement is made from clinker with special additives to prevent any porosity. Rapid Hardening Portland cement: Rapid Hardening Portland Cement is similar to OPC, except that it is ground much finer, so that on casting, the compressible strength increases rapidly. Water Proof Cement: Water Proof Cement is similar to OPC, with a small portion of calcium stearate or non- saponifibale oil to impart waterproofing properties.

Fly Ash

GROWTH:-

Cement manufacturing in the year 1951. Diversified to Refractory manufacturing in the year 1954. Changed the process of cement manufacturing from wet to dry in 1989.
First in India to install Vertical Roller Mill for cement grinding (CVRM) and enhancing the cement manufacturing Capacity to 10 Lakh TPA in 1997. Installed 2nd CVRM and enhanced cement manufacturing capacity to 12.75 Lakh TPA in 2001. 3rd CVRM installed and cement manufacturing capacity enhanced to 18 Lakh TPA in 2005. Cement Manufacturing Capacity enhanced to 20 Lakh TPA through de-bottlenecking in 2006.

Started Kapilas Cement Works with million tonne capacity grinding unit at Tangi, Choudwar on 29th March 2008. Started Clinkerization project with 1.3 million tone capacity at Rajgangpur on the eastern side of the existing works likely to complete by fy 08-09. Started another Refractory plant named OCL China with a capacity of 10,000 tpa. Work of Captive Thermal Power Plant projected of 2*27 MW capacity is in progress at Rajgangpur. Proposed to have 3 more cement grinding units in 3 years.

ACHIVEMENTS:The first indian Refractory manufacturer to achieve ISO 9001 Certificate for all its refractory products. Obtained ISO 9002 Certification in 1998. Obtained ISO 9001-2000 Certification in 2004 for cements products. Bagged National Award for Energy efficiency in Cement Industry from NCCBM in 2009 Obtained ISO 9001-2008 Certification in 2010. Obtained Certification for Environment Management System as per IS/ISO 14001:2004 and Occupational Health and safety Management System as per IS/ISO 18001:2007 from BIS. ISO 14001 Environment System & OHSAS 18001 System are under implementation. The first cement manufacturer in eastern India granted the right to use American Petroleum Institutes (API) monogram for its oil well grade cement. Awarded with special Export award by Capaxil consecutively for seven years including current year. TPM implementation is in progress.

GLOBAL PRESENCE:1:-OCL was of the first to initiate exporting Cement from Eastern Region to countries like Bangladesh & Nepal. 2:- As per refractory is concerned they are exporting their products to around 32 countries in the world. i.e Canada, USA, Brazil, UK, Sweden, Netherlands, Hungary, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Japan, South Korea, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, Iran, UAE, Kuwait, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka & many more. 3:- OCL Refractories has been used in the largest steel plants & other non-ferrous plants in all the above countries.

This problem which can be improved by the strength and the distribution network of OrissacCement Works & Supply. Dealers are of the opinion that among all the media television is the most powerful media followed by the hoarding and wall painting which every common man can see. So company should have to utilize then as much as possible. I found company is poor in providing services such as timely small deliveries regular visits and gift items etc. The company should focus more on sales promotion, advertisement and public relation.

If check out the satisfaction level of dealers with respect to quality of Birla Cement then we find that 85% dealers are told that it has excellent quality. So company can also see this as its strength compare to other brand in market. Dealers opinion regarding price is Favoring Birla Samrat & Its Get 1st rank in all six-brand. Its price is reasonable according to quality its also satisfy the dealer. It was found company has very good Brand Image in dealers mind. Dealers are satisfy with the price. It was found that company is lacking in Supply. As far as Brand-Name is concern , Company is on 1st Rank despite of Very popular brand like Ambuja Cement, Ultratech Cement SUGGESTIONS At the end, I would humbly suggest the company that if company has good quality, more advertisement, regular contact, marketing experts dealing with dealers in all rural and urban areas. Then company can improve their market shares, brand loyalty and promote their sales easily. Company should develop its R & D department as per the market requirement.
