NOTE: This SIL has been revised to include APU 36-300 and 131-9A oil cooler cleaning recommendations which were previously provided through SIL 49-026 and 49-051.

1.

PURPOSE

Airbus A320 Family operators have reported APU HIGH OIL TEMPERATURE auto shutdowns due to air/oil cooling system efficiency degradation by external contributors. These occurrences affect APU availability and may lead to in-service interruptions. The purpose of this SIL is to provide operators with preventive recommendations to preclude high oil temperature shutdowns.

Since the oil cooler cleaning procedure should be followed depending on operators experience and on operating environment, any reference to oil cooler cleaning will be removed from A320 Family MPD. Changes in subject SIL are highlighted by a vertical revision bar in the left hand margin of the respective page.

SERVICE INFORMATION LETTER

The oil cooler assembly is used to transfer the heat of the lubricating oil to the air-cooling system. The oil cooler assembly maintains the operating temperature of the lubricating oil within the operating temperature limits. It is located between the lubrication pumps and the filter. During normal operation, heated oil is pumped through the cooling passages of the oil cooler housing where air flows through the air passages cooling the oil. Temperature of the oil at the outlet of the oil cooler is sensed by the Oil Temperature sensor and monitored by the Electronic Control Box (ECB). When the oil temperature reaches a limit value, the ECB will initiate an automatic APU shutdown and record a HIGH OIL TEMPERATURE fault message.

3.

DESCRIPTION

A true High Oil Temperature state might be induced by several conditions: a/ Air cooling system duct leak, cooling fan damage or air passage blockage will reduce the oil cooler efficiency. b/ Dusty operating environment conditions may contribute to APU oil cooler contamination, which restricts the airflow through the oil cooler, thus resulting in reduced cooler core efficiency. Field experience has shown that high temperature operating environments combined with conditions a/ and b/ will contribute to reaching the oil temperature limit value quicker.

4.

RECOMMENDATIONS

4.1 Preventive Monitoring To address those events, Airbus recommends airlines to regularly monitor the oil temperature through APU MES/IDLE Report 13. The APU MES/IDLE Report 13 is available through the Aircraft Integrated Data System (AIDS) and is used to monitor APU performance. The report is an average collection of APU related parameters during the starting of each main engine as well as during APU idle condition.

More particularly, APU Report 13 displays Oil Sump Temperature (OTA) and Load Compressor Inlet Temperature (LCIT). These two parameters may be used to compute an Oil Temperature (OT) value for monitoring purposes, taking into account the environmental effect of temperature. OT = OTA - LCIT 4.2 Preventive Actions

SERVICE INFORMATION LETTER

APU APS3200 When the Oil Temperature (OT) reaches the following limit value, we recommend the operator to apply the oil cooler cleaning procedure, as per above referenced manual: For LCIT < 20C, For 20C < LCIT < 35C For LCIT > 35C OT: 115C OT: 95C OT: 90C

Particular attention should be paid during the whole summer period. In addition to this preventive action, we recommend those operators operating in hot environmental conditions, to systematically perform an oil cooler cleaning and carefully inspect the cooling duct for leaks at the beginning of the summer period. APU 131-9A When Oil Sump Temperature (OTA) reaches 130C, which is 30C below the APU Auto shutdown limit triggered by the ECB, we recommend the oil cooler cleaning procedure as per above referenced manual. Particular attention should be paid during the whole summer period. In addition to this preventive action, we recommend those operators operating in hot environmental conditions, to systematically perform an oil cooler cleaning and carefully inspect the cooling duct for leaks at the beginning of the summer period. APU 36-300 At regular intervals, to be defined by the operator according to the A/C operating environment, remove and inspect the APU oil cooler and apply the oil cooler cleaning procedure as per above referenced manuals. 4.3 Corrective Actions If condition a/ of paragraph 3 is experienced, we recommend the operator to fix the damage at the earliest opportunity. If condition b/ of paragraph 3 is experienced, we recommend the operator to clean the Oil Cooler as per above referenced manual.

5.

CONCLUSION

The oil cooler cleaning procedure should be followed depending on operators experience and on operating environment.
