Thanks for taking this catalogue with you. It is a special one, because its part of our 10th anniversary in Milan. For those who dont know us: we are Tuttobene and we connect designers to the market. We create design exhibitions for young design talents and match our clients with the designers that fit them best. For this years jubilee edition, we invited 10 experienced designers who have used Tuttobene as a starting point for their international careers, and who have developed their oeuvres succesfully since. Looking back every now and then can be a good thing. It shows you how to learn from the work of others, but it will also expose time-bound developments with which one can create a new vision. And thats when you start to look ahead. Within Tuttobene, weve been using our experiences of the last decade to develop our own vision. A vision that needs regular updates as the world is changing rapidly. It does however contain some fixed values, of which the importance of stimulating the international practice of young talent is the most important. Without being bothered by habits, ties or relationships, young people need to be enabled to search for answers and solutions. Beside the 10 more established names, we also present 17 new talents. Together, 27 participating designers are included in the Exhibition Retro/ Perspective 10 years Tuttobene, or TUTTOBENE X.

Besides an exhibition, there is room for the TUTTOBENE WORK/SHOP. The Work/Shop is located in The Magazzini, a vibrant and hard to miss location in the middle of the city. Here, several international designers exhibit their work, and visitors can buy design items. The Work/Shop is shared with Tuttobenes partners Heineken, Designersblock and Coolhunting. Both Tuttobene X and Tuttobene Work/Shop underline what Tuttobene aims to be: an intermediary between young design talent and the market. So, while looking ahead, please feel free to contact Tuttobene when you are in search of a designer for a specific project or product. We can help!

Tuttobene would not exist without the generous support of others. We would like to express our gratitude to all the people that contributed to this project; especially Maurice Jansen for helping out in numerous ways. Our project managers Rosanna van Gent and Ivana Tumbarello made all the difference with their endurance. Our selection committee, consisting of Anne van der Zwaag (director Object Rotterdam) and designers Pieke Bergmans and Jacob de Baan, helped us to create a wellbalanced and inspiring exhibition. Without our external partners, we would not have been able to realize another Tuttobene: The Creative Industries Fund NL, Heineken, BNO, and The Consulate-General of the Netherlands for their help over the past 10 years.

MADE BY R AIN WWW.ALIKIVANDERKRUIJS.COM

A L I K I VA N D E R K R U I J S Aliki van der Kruijs presents textiles developed through a technique called hydrography: the mapping of a body of water. This allows Van der Kruijs to capture and visualize the depths and tides of water movement. Within this project, silk textiles are prepared digitally with a layer of watersensitive ink. Since the 1950s, rainfall has increased by about 4% due to climate change. Rain overly present in the Netherlands is a threedimensional event predicted and displayed by weather charts, satellites and graphs. But what would it be like to capture the experience of rain on textile, so one would be able to start wearing the weather?

Tuttobene has functioned as an intermediary platform by connecting young creative talent to both the industry and the market over the past decade. This year, Tuttobene specifically aims to encourage designers who manifest an ecological, social or economic vision within their projects. For example, Aliki van der Kruijs visualises climate change due to rain increase on her Made By scarves, while Siba Sahabi reflects on social structures in the European and Middle Eastern ceramic traditions. To emphasize the focus point of this years Tuttobene; each designer will be introduced by their mission statement and the accompanying selected projects.

ANNEBE T PHIL IPS At first glance, the designs of Annebet Philips are characterized by bold shapes, humor and graphic elements. But upon taking a closer look, one will discover that Philips playful objects entail a well-balanced concept as well as creative reasoning. The project My couch, my canvas shows seating furniture with melted foam cushions. A canvas slipcover can be draped on top, and will cover the sofa entirely. Only the bold painted outlines on the canvas create a suggestion of separate pieces within the couch itself.

D E N N I S PA R R E N Dennis Parrens designs focus solely on light: without it, color simply would not exist. Accompanying this statement, Parrens CMYK Lamp eloquently reminds its user that light is a fundamental factor in experiencing ones surroundings. The CMYK Lamp celebrates the mystery of light, and combines design innovation with a conceptual art aesthetic. LED lights have created an entirely different electric light appearance over the past few years, with which Parren loves to experiment. These contemporary possibilities are used to create a delicate array of colors and shadows.

ineke otte design Nature has been a source of inspiration for Ineke Otte for over 30 years now. The endless range of floral colors, fresh green grass and bright blue skies endure to inspire Otte within her jewellery, tables, lamps, shawls, sculptures and glass objects. Ottes products show colorful designs as she often experiments with different material combinations. Her art and designs manifest dynamic shapes, while symbols form an essential element within her oeuvre. The selection of jewellery presented at Tuttobene makes her artistic diversity insightful, and give an insight into Ottes creative processes. Over the past few decades, Otte has designed a wide range of objects, as well as interior concepts for hotel rooms and office buildings.

studio vacant nl , sandberg institute The Sandberg Institute has developed a twoyear Masters program, Vacant NL, to encourage designers, creatives and scientists to develop design strategies for the temporary use of vacant buildings and spaces. The program challenges students to adopt a hands-on approach in order to research and explore the potential of unused properties in the Netherlands. The installation Inside the white whale presents an ideal strategy for colonizing vacant buildings with minimal effort and materials. Large container bags, primarily used for transporting raw materials in shipping containers, can be used to create temporary spaces in any location imaginable. These new flexible spaces can serve a wide variety of purposes, superimposing a new world over the existing one.

The co-creation of Fieldfurniture + Sit & Heat creates a unique and comfortable dining experience within any (public) space. Sitting in a Fieldfurniture dining unit while being warmed by the Sit & Heat reveals the potential of parks, plazas, meadows and even abandoned buildings. While being comforted by the Sit & Heat, one does not have to worry about environmental damage; one cushion only uses about 30 Watt to ensure warmth on chilly evenings. Sometimes, social responsibility and satisfying aesthetics do go hand in hand.

She weaves various materials into one piece, in order to bring objects to life. All of Renates products are recognizable through their clear design language and their ability to surprisie through aesthetics. By combining concrete with silicone rubber, a series of various pendant lamps emerge. The jagged intersection of these contrasting substances celebrates the fusion of soft and hard. Through the use of these materials, Vos lamps emit a warm light that juxtaposes the series industrial appearance.

ROL AND DE MUL / LUMEDAR Roland de Mul combines organic shapes with man-made constructions. The Earthbound meeting table and the W.I.T.O Desk Lamp manifest De Muls fascination for dead material. Bringing dead material back to life is a main factor within De Muls oeuvre. Through human interaction and the incorporation of linguistics and visual memories, lifeless objects retrieve a certain vivacity. The Poetry Light emphasizes the communicational function of the table: it can be seen as a text balloon in a comic, but it can also form a conversation starter. For the Earthbound Meeting Table, De Mul was inspired by the conference where was decided on the atom split. The frame is dividable, while the tabletop is designed to resemble a shockwave.

SIBA SAHABI Siba Sahabi can be characterized as a poetic designer. Drawing from her German and Iranian roots, Sibas work aims to show how different cultures inspire each other, leading to renewal and artistic enrichment. Her designs are inspired by both European and Middle Eastern ceramic traditions. A passion for craft and imperfection drives the process of Sibas work. Between Two Rivers exhibits the versatility of the city of Mesopotamia. Mesopotamia is regarded the cradle of Western civilization, but it is also where the pottery turntable was invented. For Sahabi, it forms a main inspiration for her collection of sculptural felt vessels.

Pushing the limits of old techniques and materials, Van der Werff likes to play with the users expectations. While her designs usually have a clean demeanor, she always incorporates an unexpected aspect. Through Porcelain+, Van der Werff investigated the materiality underneath a glazed layer. By mixing uncommon materials with porcelain, she created a new array of structures and colors, exploring the familiarity of beauty. This archive has lead to several designs, amongst which a series of carpets. These wool carpets are handmade, and designed to be placed in corners and along edges to soften the architecture we are surrounded by. The Vouwwow combines the comfort and posture of a lounge chair with the flexibility of a folding chair. The chair comes flatpacked and is folded from a continuous sandwich of plywood between two layers of PET-felt. The design focuses on the innovative use of recycled materials, little waste production and efficient storage and transportation.

Thijs Rijkers therefore introduces the Spetalaser, a circular rotating mirror array in which each component is visible and self-explanatory. As the Spetalaser rotates, a laser beam reflected between the mirrors creates a wide variety of shapes. The human eye perceives these shapes as solid 3D elements instead of rotating 2D images. These projected visuals thus symbolize Rijkers design philosophy, while the machine exposes the technique used.

Yahav and Cao were inspired by the modernity of the 1950s and 60s, incorporating elegant lines and the use of geometrical shapes. A layer of colored glaze adds personality to each object. The interaction of different materials, colors, textures and shapes emphasizes the symbiosis between the individual work of Yahav and Cao.

It consists of transverse hardwood combined with a stainless steel frame, giving the table a sleek character. Thereupon stands the Mikado; a functional shape built out of metal lines that playfully juxtapose terrace furniture.

Many cultures around the world have developed specific methods for carrying bags, which is an important motive within Weleer Vergeers design process. Both the History Bag and the Culture Bag show the possibilities of forgotten wisdom within todays fashion. The History Bag for example reintroduces the 17th & 18th century tradition of carrying ones valuable belongings in invisible pockets. The History Bag is designed to form a smooth garment to the carriers body, wherein a delicate hand pocket provides functionality. Thus, ones hands remain free while the weight of the bag is equally divided over the body.

The Beginning. A big adventure. We started Tuttobene out of the urge to show our office furniture collection: lets combine forces and share the costs! Belgium Rocks! After a limited amount of first years visitors, we had a 50/50 distribution of contributing designers from Belgium and the Netherlands. An astonishing number of 30 participating designers! But after a big robbery on Sunday morning, everything was gone... Moving to Zona Tortona... at least almost... We hosted the greatest party ever, thanks to our friends at Weltevree! Still on the edge of the Zona, but the luxurious dinner-party with chefs from Hotel Artemis Amsterdam added all the extra class needed. We made it! We are in the Zona Tortona! Dragging around 700 wooden pallets to create the exhbitions interior, were still picking splinters. A great year, although the brutal intervention of the vulcano Eyjafjallajkull made it a bit weird. Whats in a name? An unfortunate exit out of the Zona, but with two big parties everything turned out just fine! And were back, conquering Zona Tortona from inside out. Hundreds of thousands of visitors came by; was it our most succesful year? Back in Via Tortona and debuting in The Magazzini. Lets try two big shows! With the help of our public and private partners, we are moving on!

A short history

WORK / SHOP 09.04.2013 14.04.2013

Tuttobene was founded by Victor le Noble and his former boss in the early years of the 21st century. At OZO, the duo produced office furniture that needed to be presented in Milan. Being newcomers, exhibiting alongside other designers would give them a better and cheaper framework. It formed the beginning of a quest for participating designers and companies in the Netherlands and Belgium. Le Noble called their initiative TuttoBeNe, meaning everything is good in Italian, as well as everything you see here is from Belgium and the Netherlands. After having organized a 2nd exhibition in 2005, Le Noble continued to host Tuttobene with his new partner David Heldt. Together, they directed Tuttobene towards becoming an organization focused on sustainable design, which was fairly new at that point. Combining design, sustainability, young talent and international business lead to a variety of new opportunities, and a series of succesful exhibitions came into existence. Due to a slow process of earning funds, Tuttobene put its focus solely on Dutch design. Other opportunities developed itself as Tuttobene grew larger, like Connecting the Dots: a magazine focused on the presence of Dutch design in Milan. In 2012, Connecting the Dots was able to survive on its own, causing Le Noble and Heldt to go their seperate ways. After that, it was time for Tuttobene to redirect its focus on what it does best: connecting young designers to the market in multifaceted ways. And here we are, at our 10th Milan edition, with two big shows in two exciting locations. We are ready to face the future!

Characterized by a basic approach towards techniques and materials, Floris Hovers elaborates on his fascination for simplicity and clarity. Hovers experiments with colors while exploring the balance between man & machine and work & play.

Hovers early designs form an essential part of his current aesthetic development. In search for a contemporary balance, Hovers started to combine mass-production with guild-like ideals early on. This vision leads to communicative objects distinguished by functionality.

Floris Schoonderbeek is in constant search of novel necessities and new ways to experience familiar environments. His products and projects like the Dutchtub and Rijnhuisje offer backyard adventures and a sense of freedom, as well as a flexible structure for mobility.

The handmade glass lampshades that Schoonderbeek exhibits are cheerful lighting solutions for both indoor and outdoor use. String lights are a clever way of turning a standard light string into charming lanterns, that can transform any location into a personal space.

Van Bleiswijks ambition is to create personal expressions through technical solutions. This entails both scribbling on expressive furniture, as well as cutting steel with a blowtorch. Van Bleiswijk shows that he is able to maintain a strong visual aesthetic within different concepts and design narratives.

During this years Tuttobene, Joost van Bleiswijk will show a prototype of his renowned No screw no glue high dresser, and a new cabinet from theCollage collection. By showcasing both projects, a transformation from archetypical to personal becomes visible in Van Bleiswijks work.

In Kikis work, the best ideas arise from doing. Coincidence is an important factor within this process. Van Eijk detests mannerisms and set design methodologies, and rather aims to reinvent herself in a child-like fashion. While doing so, Van Eijk never loses her professionalism and moves effortlessly between craft and industry.

It took Van Eijk three months of research to develop a stable yet casual aesthetic for Floating Frames. The pieces are hand made out of knotted anodized aluminium wire and a ceramic details. The series on display show both the potential of what could be, as well as fully functioning objects. Van Eijks Frames exist in a floating state between fiction and reality, while almost being absorbed by their surroundings.

Kranen and Gilles delight lies in the juxtaposition of materials. A reinterpretation of a rustic farmers chair retains the originals simple wooden base, but adds a cut-aluminum back. Many of Kranen/Gilles pieces have plant-like qualities. The structure supporting an end table or bench resembles tree branches. A wing chair incorporates vine-like leather strips and sinuous stitching. The work of Kranen/Gille is

both organic and industrial, with touches of folklore and polished modernism. The Forest chair formed the centerpiece of Kranen/Gilles initial furniture collection. It pays hommage to the Austrian Volkskunst a style that developed within the isolation of the Tirol mountains in a contemporary way.

PeLiDesign was founded in 2006 by Alexander Pelikan and is located in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The design studios main objective is to connect mainstream to niche, and high tech to craft. Pelikan believes that treasures lie in the intersection of various techniques, which is why he mainly cooperates with innovative companies.

With the CLICrocker, Pelikan manifests the power of socalled digital craftsmanship. The combination of bamboo and extra clear glass could only be realized through the expertise of experienced craftsmen. By incorporating existing knowledge into his design process, Pelikan was able to combine comfort and material beauty within one chair.

Sander Bokkingas work is directly related to his quest for physical and spiritual freedom. Trained as an architect, this crusade for liberty defines spaces on the intersection of urban life and the countryside. Bokkingas work relates to the non-descript desire of citizens to break free from rules and conventions in a tactile and

positive manner. His project is an infusion of joy, freedom and interaction. In My Little Dear Huntertje, Bokkinga aims to combine two extremes: hunting livestock and ordering fastfood. In this way, Bokkinga enables raising parents to explain the role of the meat industry to their kids.

The designs of Dave Keune target both aesthetical and functional values. While developing his products and environments, Keune operates through layers of research, development and production. By applying skilled craftsmanship within the production process, he aims for high-qualified results in both usability and durability.

According to Keune, mans quest for cultivation is symbolized by the shape of a straight line. Within the rigid framework of these lines, a vibrant poetic field can emerge that stimulates us to extend our human condition. Keune hopes to enforce a dynamic state of mind to those using his Desk Primitive and Bed Primitive.
