MENAHOT: CHAPTER 6: MISHNAH 1 From the following meal-offerings the Handful is taken, and the remainder belongs to the priests: the meal-offering of fine flour, and of the frying pan, of the deep-frying pan, the cakes, the wafers, the meal-offering of a non-Jew, the meal-offering of women, the meal-offering of the omer, the sinner's meal-offering, the meal-offering of jealousy. R. Shimon says: The Handful is taken from the sinner's meal-offering brought by priests, and the Handful is offered up by itself, and the remainder is offered up by itself. Kehati This chapter further elaborates the rules concerning the meal-offering rite. From the following meal-offerings the Handful is taken, and the remainder belongs to the priests: the meal-offering of fine flour - concerning which it is written (Lev. 2:2-3): "and he shall take from it his handful... and the priest shall burn the memorial part of it on the altar... and the remnant of the meal-offering shall be Aaron's and his sons'," And the meal-offering of the frying pan, and the meal-offering of the deep-frying pan, the cakes and the wafers - of the mealoffering made in the oven - regarding which it is written ( ibid. ibid. 9-10): "and the priest shall take from the meal-offering its memorial part (i.e., the Handful), and shall burn it on the altar ... and that which is left of the meal-offering shall be Aaron's and his sons'." The Handful is taken from these meal-offerings after they have been baked and broken into pieces (see above, introduction to 3:2) the meal-offering of a non-Jew, the meal-offering of women - any of the above vowed by a non-Jew or by a woman - the meal-offering of the omer, thus (ibid. 2:16), "and the priest shall burn the memorial part of it" - the sinner's meal-offering - thus (ibid. 5:12): "and the priest shall take his handful of it, the memorial part of it and burn it on the altar" the meal-offering of jealousy - brought by the sotah, thus (Num. 5:26): "and the priest shall take a handful of the meal-offering, the memorial part of it, and burn it on the altar," furthermore (Lev. 6:7-9): "and this is the law of the meal-offering... and he shall lift from it his handful... and shall burn it upon the altar... And the remainder of it shall Aaron and his sons eat." The statement "this is the law of the meal-offering" implies that all the meal-offerings were treated alike in that the priests eat the remainder of such meal-offerings from which the Handful is taken. R. Shimon says: The Handful is taken from the sinner's meal-offering brought by priests - even though the latter is burnt entirely on the altar, and there is no remainder left to be eaten by the priests, thus (Lev. 6:16): "every meal-offering of the priest shall be wholly burnt, it shall not be eaten," it nevertheless requires the taking of the Handful and the Handful is offered up by itself, and the remainder is offered up by itself - according to the first Tanna the Handful is not taken from the priest's mealoffering but is burnt entirely, since in his view the Handful is taken only from those meal-offerings whose remainders are eaten. The halakhah follows the First Tanna.
