2005 Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty
Queen - Erin Waid
I am honored to represent West Seattle as your 2004-2005 West
Seattle Hi-Yu Queen. Since I moved to West Seattle from New
Orleans ten years ago, I have enjoyed all of the community’s
summer events, especially the street fair and the American
Legion Grand Parade. I look forward to attending the Hi-Yu
events this summer and meeting many people from the
West Seattle community.
I graduated from Holy Names Academy High School in
2003. While at HNA, I was involved in honors and
Advanced Placement classes, was named a school officer, a
recruiting officer, and an AP Scholar. A few of my extra-
curricular activities included piano, cross-country, track,
and dance. I was also a math tutor for students at
Lafayette Elementary School. My senior year, I received
the President’s Scholarship from the University of Portland.
This Fall, I will return for my junior year and continue my
studies in Biology with concentration toward pre-med.
While in Portland, I work as a First-Year workshop instructor.
This allows me to help incoming college students with the many
adjustments needed to make their first year at college a successful
one. This summer, I will work as a nanny and take courses in chemis-
try at Seattle University.
I would like to thank my family and friends for all of their love and support. I would also like to thank the
Hi-Yu volunteers for their hard work, my neighborhood for being so supportive in the endeavor of com-
pleting the Hi-Yu float, and the Lion's Club for sponsoring me as a Hi-Yu candidate.
I hope everyone has a wonderful summer. I look forward to seeing you at
the Hi-Yu events!

Princess - Erin York

After a year in New York, I am happy to be back in the laid back
city of Seattle. I had a very successful freshmen year at Wagner
College. I enjoyed all of the life the city had to offer as well as
stayed active on campus. Next year I will be starting my
sophomore year of college at the University of British
Columbia in Vancouver, BC as a Film Studies Major. As for
the summer, I am working full time at Brennan Vacations and
working with the Pandemonium Players on their August
production of Fiddler on the Roof. I also look forward to the
many exciting events we will be having for Hi-Yu. I would like to
thank the Waid family for all their hard work to make this year’s
float amazing and also my own family for supporting me and
staying active in Hi-Yu in my absence.

(Tamit) Gina Nakamura is a senior at the University of
Washington; her major is Communications and minor is
Information Technology & Society. Gina plans to pursue
her MA in Public Administration upon graduation.
Working at South Seattle Community College as the
“Outreach Associate” enables her to visit local high
schools, attend community events, and promote higher
education at college fairs. She enjoys helping students be
successful, whether it’s locating funds for tuition, learning
about student resources, or giving campus tours. Living in
West Seattle, Gina is also a part-time nanny for many families
in the area. On the weekends, you can find her swing dancing,
playing WoW, or simply hanging out at the Rocksport. Gina loves
serving the West Seattle Community as a Hi-Yu Princess and encourages
other young, strong, and intelligent women to explore these rewarding opportunities.

Princess - Timmesha Watson

Timmesha is currently attending South Seattle
Community College and plans to transfer to Central
Washington University majoring in criminal justice. Her
plans include a law degree at Seattle University’s Law
School.

While in school, she also works as a child care provider at

Hiawatha Community Center and Schmitz Park
Elementary. In her free time Timmesha enjoys spending
quality time with her family. So far, she has enjoyed
serving the West Seattle Community as a HiYu princess this
year. She is looking forward to all the up and coming events.

Queen - Kathryn Gouker
Aloha my West Seattle friends. My name is Kathryn Gouker and I'm
your Junior court Queen. I attend Tilden School and will be going
into 5th grade in the fall. My older brother, Mitch, will be going into
7th grade. My favorite classes include P.E., math, history, geography,
and reading. I have been getting in touch with my artistic side by
being in my school choir. I love to play softball, swim, dive and sing.
When I grow up I want to be a 5th grade teacher or a professional
horseback rider. I enjoy playing with my dog, Buffy, and hanging out
with my neighborhood friends. In the summer you can usually find
me at the Arbor Heights swim and tennis club where I am constantly
busy with swim meets and dive tournaments. My goal in life is to
travel to all fifty states and go to at least one place in every continent.
I am excited to participate in the rest of the parades and festivals this
year. As your Hi-Yu Junior Court Queen I am looking forward to
representing West Seattle throughout the neighboring communities
and meeting many different people and seeing wonderful new places. I know this will be an experience
that I'll never forget and I'm sure I will have so much fun looking back on this once in a lifetime experience.

Hello West Seattle! I was
Without Leaving
your 2003-2004 Senior Court
Queen and I am ecstatic to
represent West Seattle in the
the Neighborhood.
2005 Miss Seafair
Scholarship Program for
Women. In the fall I will be a
junior at Whitman College in
Walla Walla, Washington. At
Whitman I am pursuing a
Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
and a Gender Studies minor. I
hope to either go into psychological counseling with
children or become a lawyer focusing on cases
involving women and children. I'm also very
involved with my sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta in
which I have held many offices and I'm a member of
the West Seattle Kiwanis Club. In addition to my
duties as a Seafair Princess I will be working at the
West Seattle Family YMCA as a lifeguard and taking
a course at the University of Washington.

2005 West Seattle Grande Parade Sponsored by American Legion Post #160
Photos by Peter Richards
Saturday, July 23rd at 11am along California Ave SW
On Saturday, July 23rd, at 11:00 AM, the
American Legion Post #160 will begin the 71st
annual West Seattle Parade along California
Avenue, starting at SW Lander Street and
continuing south for 1.5 miles to the West
Seattle Junction, ending at Edmonds Street.
Some highlights of the parade will include
the SEAFAIR Pirates, All City Marching
Band (made up of students from all over the
Seattle School District), The Lake City
Vigilantes, and the SEAFAIR Princesses, who
are vying for the title of Miss SEAFAIR 2005 -
not to mention the 2004-2005 West Seattle
Hi-Yu Festival Float and Royalty!
The West Seattle Hi-Yu float crew has been
working very hard in the past months takingy o u r
Hi-Yu float to parades throughout the Northwest.
As a result of their hard work, parade floats are
expected from several communities from around
the Puget Sound area. Keep buying those Hi-Yu
buttons in order to continue making our festival
float a reality!
The West Seattle Parade was started by the
American Legion Post #160 in 1934 by Post
Commander Orville Rummel. He was also
instrumental in the formation of the original Hi-Yu
Association, and in 1984 he created an annual
award that is given to a community member each
year for outstanding community service. Sadly,
Orville has now passed away, but the legacy he has
created will live on for generations to come. Be
sure and look for the Orville Rummel Award
winner at the beginning of the parade!

Seafair Pirates Land at Alki

July 9, 2005 from 10am to 5pm
The Seattle Seafair
Pirates will once
again lay siege to our
fair West Seattle
community when
they storm the beach
at the annual West
Seattle Hi-Yu / Seattle
Seafair Pirate's
Landing at Alki.
They will arrive on
Alki to pillage and
plunder during the

Festival and “Kick-

packed day starts at

10:00 AM and will
offer family fun with
entertainment, food and craft booths until 5:00 PM. Stage shows featuring local bands will entertain throughout the day on the
CAR TOYS “Aftershock” Stage. “Shelly and The Curves”, with songs from the 60’s to the present, will headline the afternoon
this year. Paul Miller of Flow Circus sponsored by Dreyer’s Ice Cream and Oh Boy! Oberto, will attempt to make the West
Coast's largest balloon sculpture, a 14 foot long Pirate Ship. Back again this year, is the popular “Swashbuckler Beach Vault”, a
US Track & Field sanctioned NW Regional Championship Pole Vaulting competition sponsored by the Willamette Strider's
Track Club. SEAFAIR and West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty and this year's candidates will make an appearance. Kids will love
participating in the Pirates Look-alike contest sponsored by the West Seattle Kiwanis Club, with great prizes. Stroll the Alki
promenade, listen to the music, or just lay in the sun on our beautiful beach.
Lest we not forget the main event, The Seattle Seafair Pirates! The excitement builds as the time for the landing approaches.
While the tide dictates the actual landing time, around noon, when you see the SFD Fireboat “Chief Seattle” spraying water and
the “Yankee Clipper” Sea Scout Sailing Vessel near by, its' cannons banging away during the “battle”, you know the pirates are
very close. The Seafair Pirates will “Hit” the beach in Landing Craft provided by the U.S. Army Reserve. Captain Kidd will be
leading the pirates in their landing on the beach at Alki, to officially start this summer’s SEAFAIR celebrations and to take over
the city. They'll have a chest of treasure and plunder to share with their little pirate mateys, too. This year should be spectacular.
Remembering what has happened in past years, what fiendish tricks could the Pirates have up their sleeve for this special event?
Come join us for a great day at the beach!

The Hiawatha Community Center once again
presents the annual Hi-Yu Concert in the Park.
Weather permitting the West Seattle Big Band will
present a concert of big band favorites for your listening plea-
sure. So bring out your lawn chairs, pack a picnic basket, and

The West Seattle Big Band is proud to be a part of this annual
event. Many of the members of the band are alumni of West
Murray’s Photography
Seattle High School and look forward to this family event. The
band performs year round at venues throughout the Seattle area, but the concerts in their own backyard
are the most fun.
The West Seattle Big Band regularly donates earnings from performances to school music programs in
West Seattle, as well as loaning equipment, and providing performances for fund raisers. So far 14
schools have received or continue to receive equipment loans, performances or financial support, since
the bands inception in 1996. In addition to schools, the band performs for the West Seattle Senior
Center, West Seattle Parade Committee, West Seattle Hi-Yu as well as other community groups in the
area.
The band is under the direction of Donn Weaver, with vocals by Stephanie Cortez. You can reach

2005 West Seattle Garden Tour

July 17th, 9am - 4pm
Explore the bounty of Northwest garden colors and textures with
the eleventh annual West Seattle Garden Tour, which starts at 9
AM on Sunday, July 17. You'll be guided through nine specially
selected gardens featuring a variety of unique styles and plantings.
This year, the Garden Tour also welcomes the ebullient gardening
guru Ciscoe Morris of KING 5 TV's Gardening with Ciscoe, who
will give a noontime lecture. Box lunches will be available for
purchase. Each year, the Garden Tour donates a portion of the day's
proceeds to West Seattle-based non-profit organizations that
promote horticultural education or community gardens. Proceeds
from this year’s Garden Tour will benefit ArtsWest Theatre,
Lafayette Playground, California Substation Project Park, and the
Camp Long Native Habitat Learning Project.
Tickets to the West Seattle Garden Tour and to the Ciscoe Morris lunchtime lecture will be
available in June and July at the ArtsWest Theatre and locations listed below. Tour tickets cost
$15, which includes admission to the Ciscoe Morris lecture. For information or to order tickets,
call ArtsWest or one of the other venues listed below.
Due to the West Seattle Garden Tour occurring on the same day as the West Seattle Street
Fair, we recommend buying your tickets in advance, or purchasing from the West Seattle Nursery on the day of the tour.
ArsWest, which is located in the heart of the West Seattle Junction (where the Street Fair takes place), will be open from 8 AM
on July 17. For more information, visit our Web site: www.westseattlegardentour.org
About the West Seattle Garden Tour. Begun in 1995 as a fund-raising event for the ArtsWest Theatre, the West Seattle Garden
Tour has evolved into an annual fundraising event for a variety of non-profit and educational organizations in the West Seattle
and surrounding communities. In addition to a yearly donation to ArtsWest, some of the organizations which have benefitted
from the proceeds of the garden tour have included: Seattle Chinese Garden Society, Delridge Neighborhood Development
Association, Lincoln Park P-Patch, West Seattle High School Environmental Sciences Academy, Alki Wildlife Habitat Project,
and the Highline Botanical Garden.

introduced parade goers to Hi-Yu Queen Julie Basket and princesses Kathie Dempsey and Sandra

its approval for the Kid’s Jamboree and the Carnival at the Golf Course and Stadium, withdrew its

Hi-Yu would like to thank Warren Lawless (who refuses to guarantee the accuracy) for his help
in compiling this interesting Hi-Yu trivia. Hi-Yu invites any resident of West Seattle who has a
collection of photos, clippings and other memorabilia of past Hi-Yu festivals to consider contributing
them to Hi-Yu with the hope that they could be archived in a permanent Hi-Yu collection at the SWSHS
Log House Museum. Hi-Yu deserves a place in West Seattle history. Please contact the Hi-Yu Info line
