Thomas Galen Hieronymus career spanned the era between the beginning of commercial radio and the modern era of radionics. It is at this point that radionics, and Hieronymus in particular, had their famous brush with popular culture. Coincidentally, the notoriety given the success of radionics in destroying predatory insects in controlled agricultural experiments briefly brought radionic theory and technology to the attention of big business and science. The fascinating details of these circumstances will be examined shortly. Believing that the "proof is in the pudding", former Brig. Gen. Henry Gross started a firm which manufactured psionic devices for agricultural use. After demonstrations, the testimonials came flooding in. While many radionics inventors were being persecuted, a host of other bright scientific minds were clamoring for a better scientific understanding of life energy and consciousness. J.B. Rhine of Duke University was busy making a statistical case for the existence of parapsychology and psychic ability in general. Carl Jung in Switzerland was exploring the landscape of the unconscious and linking alchemical knowledge to dream psychology and art. Harold Saxton Burr of Yale and Leonard J. Ravitz Jr. were measuring the life or L field of all living things with sensitive voltmeters. Robert Rosenthal of Harvard was demonstrating that bias, or the thoughts of an experimenter, could influence the behavior of laboratory rats. And, as mentioned before, S.W. Tromp, a geologist from the Netherlands, published the first scientific review of dowsing and radiesthesia entitled, Psychical Physics, in 1949.

Every night the brain goes through five phases of sleep, the first four taking place in the NREM sleep and the last one in the REM state of sleep. Let us see what goes on in each phase. Phase 1 In this phase the brain transits from alpha waves (8-13 Hz frequency) to theta waves (4-7 Hz). In this phase the sleep is very superficial, one could easily wake up from this phase. You will start losing your muscular tonus which can create spasms and hallucinations. This phase makes the transition from being awake to sleeping and takes between 5 and 10 minutes being the shortest of all five phases. Phase 2 Even though the brain waves are reducing their frequency in this phase, they are still producing little sparks of rapid and rhythmic waves known as sigma waves or sleep needles that have a frequency between 11-16 Hz and some negative waves with a high voltage called K-complex. During this phase the body temperature and the muscular activity begin to slow down, the heart pressure pumps slower, and the awareness of the external world disappears. This phase occupies approximately 45-55% of the total sleep of an adult person. Phase 3 This phase represents the beginning of the deep sleep. It is difficult to wake up from this phase, and when you do it you feel confused for a couple of minutes. The brain waves

lower their frequency to the delta waves (0,5-4 Hz), this being the lowest frequency you can experience. The nocturnal spasms and the sleep walking can appear in this phase. Phase 4 This phase is similar to the third phase and is also taking place in deep sleep. If in the third phase the values of delta waves were present in percent of 20-50%, in this fourth phase delta waves are present in a percent of more than 50%. In this phase the body is recharged with physical and mental energy and without enough sleep in this phase you will feel tired in the morning. Phase 5 or REM sleep This is the phase when you dream. This phase is characterized by rapid movement of the eyes, a high rate of breathing, and a more rapid activity of the brain. The REM sleep is also known as the paradoxical sleep, because while the brain and other parts of the body reach a high activity during this phase, the muscles become more and more relaxed and the voluntary ones remain paralyzed. If you wake up from this phase, when you fall back to sleep you will directly enter the REM state again.
