City-Wide Cleanup Scheduled for April 20

By Lisa Yako As Huron residents are well aware, the close of winter leaves us with the debris accumulated by high water, snow plows, and wind. The majority of this debris is manmade trash. On Saturday, April 20, Huron residents will have the opportunity to collectively make a difference in the city by participating in the annual city-wide cleanup. According to Chris Basting, Parks & Municipal Grounds Coordinator for the Huron Parks and Recreation and organizer of the city-wide cleanup, the goal of the cleanup is to beautify our city by picking up the trash, debris, and plastics that are scattered throughout the city. One of the main areas of concern this year is along Route 6 from Center Street to Rye Beach Road. The biggest impact of the cleanup is seen in the public areas, especially along the beaches and the highways; yet, Basting stressed that the cleanup is about more than just picking up trash; it is about building community and community pride. The whole idea of the city-wide cleanup is not to do just the public areas, like the parks and schools, but to get neighbors to pool their resources and work together to clean up their neighborhoods. The annual city-wide cleanup will be held rain or shine. Participants are invited to meet at the Boat Basin building between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM. Supplies, including garbage bags, gloves, and bottled water, will be provided by the Erie County Department of Environmental Services. Once you have your supplies, you can either choose a designated area to pick up trash or work with your neighbors to cleanup your neighborhood. Regardless of the area you choose to work, the full garbage bags should be left in that area. After you have volunteered, your hard work will be rewarded. The Huron Lagoons Marina, the Huron Chamber of Commerce, and McDonalds have teamed up to provide lunch for the cleanup volunteers. The cookout lunch will likely include hot dogs, baked beans, potato salad, chips, etc. Basting did not have enough words to express his gratitude for the local businesses that help with the cleanup. These businesses take the burden off the Parks Department. The sponsors give their time and their money. Whether you can give one hour or three or more, you are encouraged to participate in the cleanup. This is a great opportunity for those seeking community service hours. Collectively, we can truly make a difference in our community.

Art Displays at the Huron Public Library Showcase Local Artists

By Lisa Yako Each month, the Huron Public Library invites local artists to display a collection of their work in the librarys lower level. This month, the featured artist is Dr. Joel Rudinger. Though Joel has explored many art forms in his lifetime, his display consists of pieces he created solely from cut black paper. It truly is amazing the emotion that can captured in and evoked by these images. Joels interest in the art of cut paper began many years ago while he was teaching childrens literature at BGSU Firelands. Joel became particularly interested in the work of award-winning author and illustrator, Ed Young. Joel explained that he was amazed at the power he (Young) was able to get (from cut paper). Joel also found inspiration in the old Grimms fairy tales. He wanted to see how the colorful images used by Young and others would work on black paper and in strong silhouettes. Joel began conceptualizing his desired images by sketching them first. Yet, Joel stated When you are working with cut paper, you dont often know how things are going to go. Joels excursion into the art form of cut paper gained a purpose when he decided to write a book on Sedna, goddess of the sea. During his four years at the University of Alaska, Joel was introduced to the Inuit myth of Sedna. Many years after leaving Alaska, Joel read a very poor re-telling of the story of Sedna and felt compelled to set the myth straight. Of course, a book intended for children needed to have illustrations. So, Joel chose to create the images for his book, Sedna Goddess of the Sea, using cut black paper. With the illustrations complete, Joel published his book in 2006. Yet, Joels experimentation with cut paper did not end here. Joel was asked by Harry Eiss to create images for his book, Divine Madness, which was published in 2012. Joel created a number of striking images for Eiss book. The display that Joel compiled for the Huron Public Library includes 24 images in all. Of these, nine images are from his Sedna collection, 11 are from Divine Madness, and the remaining images are new pieces that Joel recently created for the exhibit. According to Joel, The Sedna images, the Divine Madness images, and the new images all represent a progression of styles which viewers can see as they walk down the row. Each of the images likely will evoke a different response from every person that views them since many of the images are abstract. In speaking of the display, library director, Daniel Slife, stated Joel manages to skillfully convey a spectrum of mythic emotional themes and abstractions with the deceptively simple medium of plat cut paper. In the process his appreciation for the Inuit culture comes through loud and clear. Next time you are at the library, take some time to muse over Joels display. You might just be surprised at what you see! Joels work will be on display through April 30.

Bar Norths Chef Will to Headline at Toledo Charity Event

By Lisa Yako On Sunday, April 21, Huron will be represented at a major culinary event in Toledo. Chef Will Skinner, executive chef at Bar North Bistro, is one of three headline chefs invited to participate at the Share our Strengths Taste of the Nation. This event, which is sponsored by a variety of Toledo-area businesses and national sponsors, American Express, The Food Network, and Sysco, is the nations largest culinary benefit that supports anti-hunger and anti-poverty efforts. Locally, the event has raised over $1.4 million since its inception in 1996. The recipients of this years proceeds will include Toledo GROWs, Toledo Day Nursery, Aurora House, and Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank. Receiving an invitation to participate in the Taste of the Nation is quite prestigious and an honor for Chef Will. Chefs notable in the media, including Michael Symon, have participated in this event in the past, and this is the first time a chef from our area has been invited to take part. Chef Will explained that he received a call from Labib Hajjar, owner of the Beirut Restaurant in Toledo and one of the organizers of Toledos Taste of the Nation, asking him to participate. Hajjar learned about Chef Will because of Wills involvement in the Best Upcoming Chef Under 30 competition. Will was impressed with the mission of the event and agreed to participate. Share Our Strength brings together not only great chefs but people from everywhere to raise awareness of childhood hunger, and if Bar North and I can be a part of helping them in any way, it is honor to do so. stated Chef Will. The Taste of the Nation is a culinary treat for all in attendance. Guests will have the opportunity to sample over 100 different foods prepared by local restaurants and the headlining chefs. Chef Will plans to make a duo of walleye and crab with a coconut curry reduction and Asian slaw. He explained that this dish is very similar to the lobster and crab duo we have on the Bar North menu. I wanted to stay true to what we are about at Bar North- fresh and local ingredients with a casual but yet upscale twist. Though Chef Will is donating his expertise to the Taste of the Nation, he feels his participation in the event will

draw attention to Bar North. This will have a synergistic effect. As Bar North gets more successful and continues to grow, we will hire more staff which opens up jobs, etc., which will only make our community stronger. But that is not the main focus of us participating. We want to help out educating people on how important it is to stop childhood hunger, which is a huge honor for me and Bar North. Todd Palmer, president of Bar North, sang Chef Wills praises and stated I am extremely proud to have Chef Will represent Bar North at this event. It really validates his hard work, creativity, and passion for what he does to be headlining such a prestigious fundraising event. Unfortunately, tickets for the Taste of the Nation are sold out. Nonetheless, you can still sample Chef Wills creations at Bar North Bistro on a daily basis. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner daily at 11:00 AM.

Huron Fire Department Dive Team in training
The Huron Fire Department Dive Team has started its training schedule in the last few months. We have had two training dives in the pool at Sawmill Creek Resort thus far. We start out trainings in the pool each year for a few reasons. The pool gives us a shallow and controlled environment to acclimate ourselves to being under the water again. We use the monitored water of the pool to find any repairs that may need to be made to our equipment after not being used over the winter months. The pool dives also allow us to make any changes to the weights we wear. In the coming months we have dives scheduled in a variety of different waters. We will be in the lake, the river, a few different ponds in the area, as well as the quarry a White Star in Gibsonburg. The variety of waters we use gives us a range of varying depths and water clarity. Well never be able to train for all possible rescue scenarios, but the diversity of waters we utilize aid in gaining a comfort for the water. As the weather begins to change and the water sports season comes upon us, we would like to remind you to be safe in and around the water. The Huron Fire Dive Team would also like to thank Sawmill for their continued support in allowing us to use their facilities.

FREE FISHING DAYS 2013

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has announced that May 4 and May 5, 2012 are Free Fishing Days . Free Fishing Days allow Ohio residents to experience fishing without purchasing a fishing license. Only two days per year are designated as free fishing days. Ohio 2013-2014 fishing licenses are now available for purchase. Those fishing on the waters of our state must carry a proper fishing license except on the designated Free Fishing Days . Fishing licenses are required for catching frogs and turtles as well. These licenses can be purchased on line at www.wildohio.com or through local vendors. The licenses are valid from March 1, 2013 through February 28, 2014. Those who are exempt from fishing licenses are as follows: 1. Children less than sixteen (16) years of age; 2. Those giving assistance to an angler who is physically disabled, provided the two (2) persons together are using only one (1) line; 3. Fishing in a private pond; 4. Fishing on land or water which they or their parents own; 5. Fishing on land or water where they or their parents are tenants on which they reside and from which they derive the majority of their income from agricultural production on that land (except stateowned lakes); 6. Members of the U.S. Armed Forces on active duty while on leave or furlough;

By Judge Bill Steuk, Huron Municipal Court

7. Persons fishing in privately owned ponds, lakes, or reservoirs to which and from which fish do not migrate (license is required for taking frogs or turtles from these waters).

Certain citizens are able to receive a free license. They are: 1. Ohio Residents born on or before December 31, 1937; 2. Persons who are mobility impaired and require the assistance of another person to cast and retrieve; 3. Residents of state and county institutions; 4. Holders of Veteran license plates displaying the international wheelchair symbol; 5. Certain veterans who are permanently disabled; 6. Former prisoners of war. These free licenses can be obtained by ordering them by calling 1-800-wildlife (1-800-945-3543). Ohio Revised Code Section 1533.32 is the statute regarding fishing licenses. Fishing without a license is considered a violation of law and is considered a misdemeanor of the fourth degree. For more information about fishing licenses, please visit the Ohio Division of Natural Resources website at www.dnr.state.oh.us. Articles appearing in this column are intended to provide broad, general information about the law. Before applying this information to a specific legal problem, readers are urged to seek advice from an attorney.

Fire Department at Work

In recent weeks, some may have noticed fire department personnel and apparatus at the corner of Main Street and Cleveland Road. Due to scheduled demolition, the department was given the opportunity to perform some vital training on this acquired structure. Many operations performed by firefighters on the scene of a structure fire cannot be simulated without such an opportunity, due to the damage it causes to the structure. Therefore, this is an extremely valuable chance for firefighters of all experience levels to learn and hone the skills needed to safely and effectively do their job. The department was able to utilize this acquired structure as one of the monthly department trainings, in which all full time and volunteer

personnel are invited to attend. This particular monthly training was conducted in a three hour evening drill with 20 members in attendance, totaling over 50 man hours. As the week progressed, each of the three shifts of on duty personnel were able to train at this structure, drilling for eight hours between the three days, totaling another 42 man hours. This situation not only provides us with a rare opportunity to better ourselves as firefighters and service providers, but also offers all members, regardless of their involvement level, to practice their skills and complete required hours of continued education to maintain their certification level. We appreciate the continued support of the community and strive to provide quality service.

Innovation In Education at EHOVE

EHOVE Career Center is thinking about education in a different way thats changing education. During an Innovation Camp last summer, EHOVE teachers and students learned processes and skills for solving problems using creativity and rational thinking. Participants worked in teams to research community partner organizations, identify specic needs that camp teams could tackle, and respond with innovative solutions that the partners would value. Students and staff are now working with professionals from local businesses and organizations to tackle a problem and find a way to solve it. It exposes students to real world opportunities that apply to the curriculum, said Assistant Director Matt Ehrhardt. EHOVE students and staff are working on several projects including: NASA Glenn Research Center - mobile photovoltaic (solar) power plant Case Western Reserve and the Norwalk Rotary Club well digging project Erie, Huron, Ottawa and Sandusky Law Enforcement Agencies Internet and cell phone safety Ohio Veterans Home - restoration projects of historic structures and photographs NASA Plum Brook - Bio-sustainability of native prai-

Safe Teen Driving/Mock Crash at EHOVE

It is that time of year again when accidents are plentiful due to the nice weather, prom and graduation seasons. Unfortunately, in past years the EHOVE family (like most high schools), has experienced tragedy in the loss of a student or loved one, due to senseless, distracted and impaired driving. EHOVE Forensic Science students came up with the idea to save lives. It really was that simple. Their goal is to educate high school students about the dangers of these types of violations and inspire them to teach others EHOVEs message. Car crashes are the number one killer of teens, so a group of EHOVE students have put together a campaign focused on local teen driving statistics involving distracted and impaired driving violations. Their efforts have been recognized by State Farm Insurance, who have awarded the program $10,000 through multiple grants to further their efforts. This Friday, April 19, split between two sessions at 10 am and Noon, all students will attend a mock crash set up by the Forensic Science students, which will include a realistic scene and presentation. Former EHOVE student Paige McNutt will share her powerful story of a prom night crash one year ago. Speakers will include EHOVE School Resource Office Nick Mazur of the Erie County Sheriffs Office, City of Huron Law Director Laura Alkire and other law enforcement, medical and funeral industry personnel. They will illustrate the dangers, responsibilities and outcomes of distracted and impaired driving, highlighting the effects to the victims, as well as a victims friends, family and others. My goal, along with the Senior Forensic Science class, is to avoid such a tragedy from occurring this year , said Forensic Science Instructor Kelly Bodkin. As a former State Trooper, I have been on the scenes of these tragedies and personally witnessed the loss of life in my own hands. Its an experience I will never forget speaking to the victims families and watching the grief wash over them when they have been told their loved one wont be coming home.

Family is why we do it all.
