Preface
This book develops the fundamental concepts needed for the analysis of the
mechanical behaviour of composite materials and structures. The analysis is
divided into five parts.
In part I, Constituents and Architecture of Composite Materials, the purpose is
to underline how the analysis of the mechanical behaviour of composites is related
to composite constituents and architecture. After a general introduction (Chapter
1), the constituents (fibres and matrix) of composite materials are considered in
Chapter 2. Chapter 3 shows how the composite materials are stacked in the form
of laminates and sandwiches.
The fundamental concepts needed to establish the analysis of the mechanical
behaviour of composite materials and structures are reported in Part II,
Fundamental Elements on the Mechanical Behaviour of Materials and Structures,
where the usual tools are reminded: stresses (Chapter 5), strains (Chapter 6), the
elasticity behaviour of materials (Chapter 7), the analysis of the structure
behaviour (Chapter 8).
Part III, Mechanical Behaviour of Composite Materials, develops the
mechanical behaviour of composite materials at the level of the constituents. The
basic structure of composite materials is the one of a unidirectional composite, the
elastic behaviour of which is analysed in Chapter 9. Composites with a cloth
reinforcement are orthotropic and their behaviour is considered in Chapter 10.
Chapter 11 analyses the elastic behaviour of unidirectional and orthotropic
composites off the material directions. The fundamental mechanisms of fracture
in composite materials are analysed in Chapter 12, and failure criteria are
considered.
In Part IV, Mechanical Behaviour of Laminates and Sandwiches, it is
developed the basics of the theory of laminate and sandwich plates. The general
assumptions are introduced in Chapter 13. Next, the classical laminate theory is
developed in Chapter 14. The effects of stacking sequences of layers in laminates
are considered in Chapter 15. The fundamental equations of the classical laminate
theory are next developed in Chapter 16 and then the energy formulation is
derived. The transverse shear effects in laminates are analysed in Chapter 17.
Lastly, Chapter 18 presents the theory of sandwich plates.
Part V, Mechanical Behaviour of Composite Structures, develops the elements
of the analysis of bending, buckling and vibrations of structures constituted of
composite materials. The simplest analyses are the ones for which the analyses
can be reduced to a one-dimensional analysis. This is the case of the cylindrical
bending of plates (Chapter 19) and that of the beam bending (Chapter 20).
Chapter 21 studies the bending of orthotropic laminate plates for which there is no
bending-twisting/stretching coupling. Chapter 22 considers the bending behaviour
of different laminate plates: symmetric laminates, cross-ply laminates and angleply laminates. The analyses show the difficulties of finding analytical solutions.
Buckling of beams and plates is considered in Chapter 23. Next, vibrations of

beams and plates are considered in Chapter 24. The last Chapter 25 analyses the
problem of predesigning a laminate or sandwich structure, establishing a general
synthesis of the concepts developed throughout the book.
It is hoped that this book will provide the elements for advancing the reader
understanding of the mechanical behaviour of composite materials and structures.
