Department of Student Activities Office of Leadership Programs Challenge Course Facilitator

Average 10 Hours per Week @ $8.40-9.60 per hour Work Study/Student Labor (job code 245)

Reporting to the designated staff member, the Challenge Course Facilitator will support the Office of Leadership Programs Challenge Course Experience (Course) by providing on-site course facilitation (outdoor and indoor) and being responsible for various administrative and operational aspects of the Course.

1. General Course Training and Facilitation:


a) b) c) d) e) f) Assist in the planning and coordination of experiential learning opportunities associated with the Course. Facilitate group Course experiences on a regular basis. Assist in the training of new facilitators. Be familiar with and adhere to all operating, safety and risk management protocols, policies and procedures. Identify opportunities for ways to enhance/improve participant experiences in Course experiences. Attend and complete all trainings and remain up-to-date on the purposes and effective methods for integrating various Course elements and activities.

2. Administration and Maintenance


a) b) c) d) e) f) g) h) i) j) k) l) Assist in the daily operation and management of the Course. Attend and participate in regular facilitator meetings. Assume responsibility for one or more administrative aspect of the Course including, but not limited to: course scheduling, facilitator scheduling, participant communication, program public relations, participant assessment, program representation, course maintenance planning. Participate in the manual labor required to maintain the outdoor course and ensure a meaningful and safe experience for participants. Hold office hours as required. Provide information to students, faculty, staff, and the general public regarding the Course as requested. Organize and maintain confidential files, records and data (print and electronic). Operate a copy machine, printer, fax, scanner, and other office equipment. Assist with Course promotion and visibility initiatives. Answer telephone, direct calls, take messages. Assist in the completion of special projects, including special event preparation and execution, large mailings, assessment projects and more. Complete other duties and special projects as needed.

3. Minimum Qualifications:
a) b) c) d) e) f) g) h) i) j) k) l) Full-time student at the UConn Storrs campus in good academic standing. Comfortable with public speaking in large groups. Ability to attend and complete mandatory August training prior to the start of classes. Ability and willingness to work weekends. Ability to work independently, as well as a member of a team. Capacity to multi-task and adhere to deadlines. Demonstrated ability to work in a flexible way with diverse populations, on staff and with participants. Ability to complete tasks with high quality and minimal supervision. Demonstrated ability to provide quality customer service and exercise sound judgment and decision making skills. Strong communication skills (verbal and written). Ability to operate an array of office equipment including, but not limited to copier, phone, fax. Strong computer literacy and demonstrated ability in office software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook and Publisher).

4. Preferred Qualifications:
a) b) Previous related experiences or skills in a similar position and/or transferable skills. Familiarity with outdoor and/or experiential education.
