FOURTH SUDAY OF EASTER

Studies done at the University de Montral in Canada in 2010 and
at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary, in 2012, show
amazing correlations of voice processing and the understanding of mater-
nal speech in infants. The Canadian study showed that newborns distinctly
process their mother's voice differently from the voice of strangers. The
Hungarian study provided evidence for understanding of a mother's speech
in an infant even before vocabulary was being formed. Along with other
investigations, researchers are uncovering information about the strong
connection between mother and child, a bond that allows a child to recog-
nize his or her mother long before the identification is made through words
and concepts.
In the Gospel, Jesus says, "My sheep hear my voice" (Jn 10:27).
Medieval theologians and mystics like St. Anselm of Canterbury or Julian of
Norwich would speak about the generative and nurturing qualities of Christ
who brought forth life in his people through the power of his resurrection
and keeps them close to himself as a mother cherishes her child. As the
Gospel this weekend relates, the shepherd gives the sheep eternal life and
no one can take them from the shepherd's hand.
The scientific studies on infants and mothers keep coming back to
the close connection that exists between those who bear children and bring
them forth into the world. In this Easter season, when we celebrate the new
birth given to each of us through the waters of baptism, we recognize that
we have been joined to Christ in a sacramental way. The font is both tomb and womb where we die to sin and are born
anew in Christ. Because he brings us forth as newborn sons and daughters of God, it only makes sense that we would
"hear his voice," because he has been speaking to us from the moment we were born in him. Christ nurtures us in our
life of grace and helps us mature in him.

The Catholic Charities Annual Appeal: Is a year-
long initiative to raise vital funds for the daily operat-
ing needs of Catholic Charities in the Diocese of
Cleveland. Money is distributed to Catholic Charities
as it is received to fund vital programs throughout
Northeast Ohio for the hungry and the homeless, the
elderly and the chronically ill, children and families
and persons with disabilities. This years appeal
theme is: We Welcome, We Serve, We Support. As
Pope Francis reminded us so eloquently in his Hom-
ily for the Christmas Mass, Holy Thursday 2013: The
Lord will say this clearly: his anointing is meant for
the poor, prisoners and the sick, for those who are
sorrowing and alone. Please consider a generous
gift to Catholic Charities 2013 Appeal, and please
pray for the success of this important Appeal...so
that the star of hope will shine brightly for all Gods
children.
