Developing a portfolio of evidence

Developing a portfolio of evidence is both a personal and a professional activity. It is a personal activity, because it is based upon your own knowledge base and activities. It is a professional activity because your portfolio will enable you, your mentor and your line manager to review your overall competence as part of your foundation and second gateway reviews. Brown (1992)* defines the term personal portfolio as follows: 'a private collection of evidence which demonstrates the continuing acquisition of skills, knowledge, attitudes, understanding and achievement. It is both retrospective and prospective, as well as reflecting the current stage of the of development of the individual'. From your portfolio, a picture of your individual contribution to your particular field will emerge. This will help those who are assuring your competence to form an accurate view of the range and quality of professional practice you have undertaken since appointment and how you are meeting the goals set out in your personal development plan. You are encouraged to submit your evidence in the form of case studies that support one or more competences. Together, these case studies will encompass either a subset of competences (for presentation at foundation gateway review) or the full set of competences (for presentation at second gateway review). An example case study and completed summary of evidence can be found in the sample case study and evidence summary sheet. The evidence to support the case study is made up of a series of documents. These may include: reflective narratives which are based on your professional activities and which relate them to competences set out in the case management framework ; accounts of successful practice written by you and validated in writing by another professional (see also verifying practice and the verification letter ); reports of your practice written by suitably qualified practitioners (see also verifying practice and the sample verification letter); and summaries of training courses with supporting certification (as appropriate). A number of sample domains and competences from the case management framework are laid out below. This is not intended to be an exhaustive list. Rather, it provides a rounded set of sample experiences and activities against which competence can be measured and indicates some of the training and development you may wish to undertake in order to meet the requirements of each domain. You should provide evidence in writing, verified by someone who is in a position to comment on your competence. Verifications should be dated. * Brown, R A (1992) Portfolio development and profiling for nurses, Quay Publishing Ltd, Lancaster.
