History/Politics
The capital of Singapore is Singapore and its real name is Republic of Singapore. Singapore was found in 1819 by Sir Stamford Raffles and there is a famous hotel named after him there. Singapore was named after the Malaysian word for City of Lions (named by a visiting prince) Singapore was first ruled by the United Kingdom but on August 31st 1963 they became an independent country. At the time the Singapore leaders thought that Singapore was too small to be independent so they joined Malaysia. During this time there was a lot of disagreement between the two countries so on August 9th 1965, Singapore separated from Malaysia and became independent. Today, the parliament of Singapore is led by the president Tony tan Keng Yam. He elects a cabinet of ministers which includes the prime minister which is Lee Hsian Loong.

Lee Kuan Yew (born Harry Lee Kuan Yew, 16 September 1923[2]), is a Singaporean politician.[3][4][5][6] Often referred to by the initials LKY, he was the first Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore, governing for three decades. He is also widely recognized as the founding father of modern Singapore. As the co-founder and first General Secretary of the People's Action Party (PAP), he led the party to eight victories from 1959 to 1990, and oversaw the separation of Singapore from Malaysia in 1965.He was basically responsible in taking Singapore from a Third World Country into a "First World Country. Singapore today is a Power House in Asia because of him He is one of the most influential political figures in Asia.[7]

Singapore Flag
The flag of Singapore was confirmed as the national flag when the Republic of Singapore gained independence on 9 August 1965. The red on the Singapore flag symbolizes equality of all men. The white on the flag symbolizes purity and virtue. Virtue means a good quality and purity means that its pure and wealth The crescent shape symbolizes a rising young nation and the five stars represent the five Singapore ideals: democracy, progress, justice, peace and equality.

Over the years Singapores landscape has changed due to urbanization. The hilly central region has been leveled, mangrove swamps have been drained and filled, and the islets have been enlarged to set up industrial estates.

Economy
The Singapore dollar is the official currency of Singapore. It is normally abbreviated with the dollar sign $, or alternatively S$. Exchange rate S$1 = .77 cents Australian or AUD$1 = S$1.3 In 2006 Singapores labour force consisted of 2.3 million people. Women make up 40% of all workers. Some 70% of the total labour force was employed in the service sector in industries such as banking, finance, retail, and tourism. Manufacturing and construction employed 30% of the labour force. Agriculture and fishing employed just 0.3% of Singapores working people. Singapore has a very strong economy with most of its money made from tourism and its busy port. The majority of Singaporeans are employed in banking, finance, tourism and the Hospitality industry. This is because Singapore needs to accommodate the many tourists that come to the country each year. Singapores port is one of the busiest in the world because of its location. Many countries around the world use the port for their importing and exporting. And its cheap fuel and payment to come into Singapore waters. Some of the famous attractions are the two zoos one day one night because they have a spectacular wide range of animals and excitement for all ages. Another great attraction is the new skyscraper which has a swimming pool on its roof top. Santosa Island is another popular tourist destination with casinos, aquarium, dolphins, Amusement Parks and of course its famous cable car which transports people and tourist from the mainland to the island. In the 1970s the hit show Hawaii five 0 shot a series in Singapore and they used the cable car in one of their scenes.

Geography/climate

Singapore is a country as well as a city state made up of sixty three islands and the main one that everyone knows is Singapore Island. Singapore is approximately 685 sq km and Australia is 7,617,930 square kilometers. It is only 46 km from east to west and 23 km from north to south.

Singapore is 137 kilometers north of the equator. It is separated from Malaysia by the straits of Johor to its north and from Indonesias Riau islands by the Singapore Strait to its south. Singaporeans participate in a wide variety of sports for recreation as well as for competition. Popular sports include football (soccer), cricket, rugby union, swimming, badminton, basketball, cycling and table tennis. Most people live in public residential areas that often provide amenities including swimming pools, outdoor basketball courts as well as indoor sport centers which provide facilities for badminton, squash, table tennis, American football, gymnastics, indoor basketball and volleyball, among others.
