#1065: Mesh Extend Using Mesh Edit Panel

Product: HyperMesh Product Version: HyperWorks 11.0.130 Computer Hardware: All supported Computer Operating System: All supported and Unix Industry: All Categories: Any Subcategories: Any

Topic Objective
The objective is to extend the mesh using the mesh edit panel

Topic Details
The extend subpanel is used to create smoothly-meshed connections between different components that do not quite touch, but are meant to. Mesh can be imprinted such that both components are remeshed to match, or the source comp is remeshed to match the destination comp, or vice-versa. In addition, you can actually merge the elements of the source component into the destination component altogether. Panel Description: The panel mesh edit is accessible through the menu 2D Page/Mesh Edit.

Panel Input: Source: Nodes Use this node selector to pick the nodes along the edge that you wish to extend. Only selected nodes will be extended. Projection: along tangent /normal to destination /along vector These three options determine the direction that the extension occurs: along the tangent of the source, normal to the destination (not recommended for curved destination surfaces), or along a vector defined via standard plane and vector selector.

Feature angle When the destination mesh contains an angle greater than this number of degrees, the extension will not overlap that line in the destination. This can lead to tapered extensions if the feature angles enclose a destination area that is narrower than the extension area. Remesh extension When this checkbox is active, the extended mesh is remeshed for better quality. When it is off, the nodes are simply moved and no new nodes or elements are created, often resulting in elongated elements:

Remesh destination: stitch only / layers / all This setting determines to what extend the target/destination mesh can be remeshed to accommodate the extended nodes' positions. stitch only performs no remesh; layers allows you to specify a maximum number of rows or layers of elements surrounding the extension that can be part of the remesh (much like washer layers); and all will potentially remesh the entire destination component in an effort to produce the best mesh that matches the extended nodes' positions.

Settings: auto detect This checkbox only displays if the remesh destination: option is set to layers or all. When unchecked, new fields appear that allow you to pick the element type (quad, tria, mixed, R-trias, or quads only) and element size used by the remesh options. Create Performs the extension using the specified settings. Reject Reverses the last extend action. Note that the extension is finalized if you leave the panel, so you cannot reject it if you leave the panel and then return again Return Exits the panel. The current state of the extension is saved, but the individual settings are not.
