to the essential elements of structural engineering there will be particular emphasis on the studio work, design projects and case studies. Architectural Engineering graduates are well suited to key roles in interdisciplinary design teams. Success on this course will lead you toward the professional status of Incorporated Engineer.

Five good reasons for choosing these courses

GOOD PAY: a serious shortage of qualified engineers is driving pay up GOOD CAREER PROSPECTS: this is an industry run by engineers so they get the top jobs THE CHANCE TO TRAVEL: our engineers work all round the world on prestigious projects ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARE: you can play a major role in helping to save the planet SATISFACTION: unlike so many other jobs, youll never get bored no two projects are ever the same

Imagine a world without water supplies, sewers, ports, roads, railways, bridges, airports, power stations, or hospitals; without safe buildings within which to work, study, live, shop and play; without earthquake proof buildings; without defences against flooding created by global warming or tsunamis. A world without wealth, refuge or hope. By applying some science, management skills, two hundred years of experience, imagination, creativity, perseverance and courage, civil engineers of both sexes and all nationalities work in teams with other professionals to create and maintain a better world with a sustainable future. We provide the infrastructure that is the skeleton of civilisation. We provide it for the developed world, and given the political will can do it for developing countries too. If the war against world poverty is to be won in your lifetime, then civil engineers will be the front line troops. At LSBU you can start at HNC, Foundation, year 1 or 2 degree level, and progress at your own pace to postgraduate and professional qualifications. With appropriate qualifications you can be granted exemptions from some units of study. We have many success stories. Graduates from accredited courses progress after further training and study to become either Incorporated or Chartered Engineers. Study can be part time or full time. There is a place for everyone in the construction team. Dont be put off by not having a particular mathematics or science skill, we will help you build those. Remember too that although engineers use mathematics and science as tools, the practice of engineering requires so much more. It is a creative profession. Civil engineering is more than science or mere mathematics. It is about doing. We are the only department in inner London that offers this complete range of courses and modes of study. We have many years of successful innovation in teaching accredited professional courses. There are modern laboratories, teaching accommodation, convenient halls of residence, libraries and computing facilities. An old spirit in a young body. Being situated within the cultural London South Bank our students enjoy an unrivalled social experience. We are also the nearest department to the world headquarters of civil engineering, at the Institution of Civil Engineers in Westminster, with its magnificent library. The headquarters of the Institution of Structural Engineers, and of other major professional learned societies are also nearby. Being near the centre of Zone One of the London Transport network is very advantageous. Although most of our students easily find well paid employment with local practices, contractors and government agencies; there is the opportunity to work internationally and this can be very rewarding. Additionally a civil engineering background is considered by leading industrialists as an excellent introduction to general management. Young engineers get early responsibility for significant resources and team leadership.

LSBU PEOPLE
IVIE IKEDIASHI MSc Civil Engineering I came to London South Bank as a mature student and graduated with a BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering and then decided to take a Masters Civil Engineering. Its not a requirement yet in the industry, though the RICS are talking about requiring a MSc for qualification. What it has done is give me managerial experience which is very valuable. My job as the resident engineer for the Grove Vale sewer reconstruction project is very much an outdoors one, though Im also involved in the design stages. I intend to move on to PhD research, studying a project on integrating the water supply and sanitation in developing countries.

PhD & MPhil

Duration: PhD: approx 3 years (F/T); 5 years (P/T); MPhil: approx 2 years (F/T); 3 years (P/T) Entry requirements: UK applicants will need a first or upper second class Honours degree in a relevant subject to gain admission to a PhD research programme. Other entry qualifications will be assessed individually, as will qualifications from non-UK universities Application procedure: applicants should contact Professor Mike Gunn (020 7815 7160 gunnm@lsbu.ac.uk) with an outline of their proposed research topic and a cv. Alternatively you can contact Ken Smith (020 7815 7118 ken.smith@lsbu.ac.uk) who will consult with colleagues to establish whether appropriate supervision and resources are available. Applicants will then be invited to attend for a discussion

The wide range of research activities undertaken within the Faculty, together with the mix of academic staff, postDoctoral research fellows and visiting professors, has created a stimulating and diverse postgraduate environment. Our commitment to research excellence and our supportive administration has resulted in an increase in student numbers in the last few years and our research groups enjoy national and international recognition in their respective areas. Recent research includes work in soil mechanics, tunnel engineering, traffic and environmental engineering, nonlinear computerised structural analysis, forensic engineering, history and conservation of maritime structures,

materials testing. We are also well placed to be involved in multi-disciplinary research projects with colleagues within the Faculty. Most research students register initially for the MPhil programme and then progress on to the Doctoral track following satisfactory completion of a MPhil Transfer Report, after 20 months of study. An interim ten month report is also required of all research students. A member of staff, who is an expert in the chosen field, is directly responsible for guiding and supporting a students research programme. If required, a secondary supervisor is also appointed to give further assistance and, in some cases, an expert from industry may also be invited to join the supervisory team. Training in research methods is available through frequent research seminars. When necessary the research student can follow, in part, relevant MSc courses available within the Faculty and in particular units on research methodology. In some cases, research students are encouraged to follow other courses available within the University or externally aimed at improving their general expertise in their chosen areas. In addition, they may be encouraged to follow language courses aimed at improving their oral and written skills both essential in their future careers. Research students are often sponsored to attend national and international conferences and to meet leading scientists in their fields and to present their research findings. The progress of all research students is formally monitored by the Universitys

SHORT COURSES & CONSULTING
