Dan Pharmacy Building

Foster & Partners Moffat Kinoshita ARCHITECTS 144 COLLEGE ST - TORONTO, ONTARIO 2006

SIGNIFICANT FEATURES

The building includes a lofty atrium and main circulation space between the laboratories and offices on the upper floors and the two lecture halls located below grade. The upper floors are supported on exposed concrete columns reaching five stories above grade, which create an open daylit space underneath. The upper floors contain laboratories in central areas where sensitive material is kept away from windows and the exterior envelope. On the other side of the building, a vertical void spans the height of the upper floors bringing in daylight to otherwise dark and closed off office spaces and classrooms. The below grade portion of the building contains two efficiently arranged lecture halls with space for large classes of up to 300 people. The most intriguing part of the building is the two pods hanging in the atrium. The two pods are illuminated at night and change colours according to light conditions. Inside, the two seemingly floating pods enclose a 60 seat lecture theater and a 24 seat classroom as well as open study lounges on top for students and faculty. The lounges are exposed to the atrium space and create an ambient environment for studying or relaxing.
