Cattle Project

Due to bad weather construction of the cow shed and the farmers house had been delayed but is now well underway and nearly completed. The well has been dug and pipes have been laid. Research for the best breed and source of cattle is being carried out and it is expected that two cows will arrive by the end of April with more in May when the water system comes into operation.
The Guild - Building a Better Rwanda The Guild Session for 2012-2013 is now nearing an end. Our team of 20 speakers have had 90 speaking engagements covering much of Scotland over the past 6 months. At each event they have been made very welcome by enthusiastic audiences. From September 2012 to March 2013 the Guild has received over 18,000 for the Building a Better Rwanda Project. The Guild Conference takes place at the end of April giving Comfort Rwanda a further opportunity to explain the Build a Better Rwanda Project to Guild conveners and members. We will also have an opportunity to chat with people and sell Rwandan crafts at our conference display stall.

Over a number of years Comfort Rwanda has been partnering with Good News International to share Gods love with the Gishyta, Mubuga and Bisesero Communities of the Karongi District in west Rwanda. With the remote community of Bisesero, in particular, it has required much gentleness and care to build trust and friendship with a community so tragically decimated during the genocide. It is with great joy, therefore, that we have received a report from Ben Kayumba of Good News International which includes detail of the rst community project in Bisesero... Historically, it has been dicult to mobilize people from Bisesero for community development. They have large areas of land which have potential to be cultivated and income generated from agricultural activities. However, due to the history of this area during the genocide, many people are rejected and hopeless, and thus debilitated in other areas of life by such a mindset. The current situation of the Bisesero people is incredibly encouraging. The people have become highly motivated, and have a new mindset. On the Irish potato plantation they have self-organized three groups of people to cultivate the land. In total four thousand kilograms of seeds were shared between the community according to the number of people in each group. In contrast to the history of separation and distrust among the people of Bisesero, it is truly amazing to see how men and women have united to work together. In addition to digging lands for the project, they also contributed to nd the needed mineral and organic fertilizers. When we visited them, they were transporting the mineral fertilizer.

All three groups are working independently yet in cooperation with each other, with a total land area of four hectares. The president of GNI appreciated their work, and reminded them that they are not merely joined by projects, instead that they are ultimately joined by the love of Jesus. The people were encouraged to meet not only to plan projects, but also to pray and thank God for what they have achieved. In Gishyta the people are doing very well, they are motivated and planning for the future. The pineapple eld has produced one harvest and they are preparing the eld for the next. As well as a sewing project the community also has plans to begin chicken farming. They have planned a system in which people will be grouped together to build coops, obtain food, and care for the chickens. In Mubuga the community have already proved their motivation, organisational skills and ability to work together. A recent pineapple harvest has enabled the community to open a community bank account and increase the size of their eld. By staggering the planting they have ensured a continuous ow of income throughout the year. Future plans include bee farming and the purchase of a juice making machine to make pineapple juice to sell and so increasing their income. The Mubuga people express their happiness deep gratitude toward Inshuti International, Comfort Rwanda, and all the people who contributed toward these projects for their community. GNI has also launched a tailor-made reconciliation program in Mubuga called Tubumwe (To Be One) which will include all Rwandans (not exclusively survivors and perpetrators) and is based on the unity expressed in John17:11. The rst term is complete at the IVTC. The sta and students are now well into the business of teaching and learning. The list of students has increased though not all attend full time. Though there have been some discipline problems at times, those who attend regularly are dedicated and learning well. It is great that I can already produce useful things Alphonse Kalinda - who turned up one day with his black boots on and asked if he could study here. He planned to sell a piece of land to pay.
