Understanding and Analyzing Population Pyramids: Scaffold sheet

Your country: Bhutan Describe population pyramid - 2000 Describe population pyramid - 2050

Fertility Rate: - The fertility rate is high since the average children 1 woman has is 3.8 (rounded up to 4). Birth Rate: - The crude birth rate per 1,000 populations is high, 26 per 1,000 populations. The births in thousands are 16,000. Death Rate: - The death rate is kind of high because there are 6,000 deaths per year (60600). Shape of the Graph: - Expansive. By the shape of the graph, you can tell that the country isnt that developed because the amount of adults and children are very different. Life Expectancy: - The life expectancy is quite low but it has improved from 1995. This measures the average number of people born in the same year can be expected to live until. Male/Female Ratio Rate: - There are more males than female. Infant Mortality Rate: - The infant mortality rate is low. Children are living past the age of five. Per 1,000 population, 74 dies before the age of 5. Dependency Ratio: - The dependency ratio is high because there are many children depending on the adults and there arent many adults. Income: - It is a low income country because its an expansive pyramid. Population Growth Rate: - The population growth rate 1.7%. The population growth rate is the average percent change a population.

Fertility Rate: - The fertility rate in 2050 is 1.7% which is quite low. Birth Rate: - The crude birth rate is 11 per 1,000 populations. The births in thousands are 10,000. Death Rate: - The death rate is likely to be high because there are 7,000 deaths. Shape of the Graph: - The shape of the graph is somewhat in between constrictive and stationary. This is good for the country because if means it has developed from 2000. Life expectancy: - The life expectancy is somewhat good (82). It increased from the year 2000. Male/Female Ratio Rate: - There are still more males than female in this year. Infant Mortality Rate: - The infant mortality rate is very low. Per 1,000 population, 6 dies before the age of 5. Dependency Ratio: - The dependency ratio for the children is low but for the adults is high because there are still adults that can take care of the children. Income: - There will be more income because the shape of the pyramid is in between constrictive and stationary. Population Growth Rate: - The population growth rate is 0.3%. The population growth rate has decreased.

Criterion A: Knowing and Understanding:

Uses development terms appropriately to describe the population structure of your

chosen country. You should show knowledge and understanding of what a population pyramid can show about a countrys development, using details from the pyramids to illustrate your ideas.

For each pyramid you should: Describe the SHAPE of the pyramids are they expansive or constrictive or stationary? Refer to the development terms that you have learned male/female ratio, birth rate, death rate, infant mortality rate, life expectancy, fertility rate, dependency ratio. Decide whether your pyramids represent a low income country or a high income country, or somewhere in between. Quote numbers (data) from the two pyramids to illustrate your descriptions. Compare and contrast the two pyramids, and offer possible reasons for the changes in the population
The life expectancy changes a lot from 61 to 82 years old. This is 21 years difference and is a good sign. The fertility rate decreased from 2000 to 2050. It decreased 2.1% which is somewhat high. The birth rate also decreased from 26 per 1,000 populations to 11 per 1,000 populations. The death rate increase which is quite negative because the birth rate also decreased and now there are more people dying in 2050 compared to 2000. Perhaps this might be because there are more children that are independent (since there arent many adults who can take care of them), they will have to take care of themselves and maybe they could not survive or make a living on their own. Comparing by the shape of the graph, the income of the country will be better in 2050 because the graph is somewhat in between constrictive and stationary which is pretty balanced. The income in 2000 is expansive meaning it is not quite developed and there are more children than adults which mean it affects the dependency ratio. In 2000, the dependency ratio for the children is high because there are more children that are independent and doesnt have an adult to take care of them. The dependency ratio in 2050 is somewhat good because there are a balanced amount

Problems that these changes might cause for the country in the future
If the death rate increases while the birth rate decreases, it can really affect the countrys population. More people are dying and fewer babies are born. That means that the population will be decreasing from the year 2000 to 2050. The population could keep on decreasing 50 years later and that would have a huge impact on Bhutan. For example: If more males have died than females (and they had children), there will be more single mothers. Usually single mothers cant really do much without a leader of the family to make money and support their family. This means that there could be more homeless people that do not have much money. It is good that the dependency ratio decreased. This means that more children will have adults to take care of them. They could be educated and go further in their life, which is a good sign for their family and they could have better future e.g. a good wife/husband, children that goes to good schools/college which leads to a better job and a better life for the next generation. The standard of living can better.

Perhaps the reason the population decreased is because more families have less children and that means that the cost to support the family decrease. The less people there are, the less money the family will have to spend. This can be one of the reasons how the country developed. The cost of living will decrease, the family can have more savings when they only

of adults and small children. I would say that aged over 20, you have more responsibility and you can take care of children properly. There are still more males than females in the males/females ratio rate. Although more amounts of males have decreased than females. As you can see in the pyramid, the population of males in the year 2000 is 36 and a bit whereas the population of females is 36.

have one children. The children can also have more savings for example: if you have 3 children, you would have to give them 100 baht each for their lunch money which is 300 total. But if you only have one child, maybe you could give him/her more savings like 200 baht per day. They could use their savings to support their future family.
For a fact, Bhutan is a measure of their countrys happiness (known as Gross National Happiness). It measures the quality and achievements of the country.

Criterion C: Thinking critically: Compare and contrast the pyramids, and suggestion reasons for the changes in the population
structure between 2000 and 2050. Consider problems that these changes might present to your country.

The skill of analysis is more challenging! In the first column, COMPARE (similarities) and CONTRAST (differences) of your two pyramids what has changed over time? Think of reasons for these changes you wont know for sure, so use phrases like, perhaps this is because, this might be because. A bit of research on your countrys population changes would certainly help! For the second column, think what problems these changes might bring to the country these could be problems for the government, or there could be problems for families and local communities. Again, you wont know for sure, so use phrases like, this might cause the problem of
