A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: The students will identity the businesses in our community. They will sort different pictures to show their knowledge of different businesses and they will create a community of their own on a piece of paper. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 2nd grade Skill Level: All levels Grouping: Whole groupdiscussion Small groupsorting pictures Individualcreating a community worksheet

C. Materials: Whiteboard and markers Picture packet for each desk group Create your own Community worksheet D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o E11.2.1 Identify businesses in the community.

E. Procedure: 1. Yesterday we discovered what a consumer is. 2. Have the students retell what a consumer is. 3. We also discussed different places that people can get or buy goods and services. 4. What were some of the places in our community where consumers can get or buy goods and services? 5. List the names of community businesses on the board and the goods or services that they provide for the community. 6. Hand out a packet of pictures to each desk group. 7. Have the students sort the pictures. (The students will come up with their own categories.) 8. Walk around and observe the groups as they work on sorting their pictures. Ask questions about why they chose the different categories.

9. Now you are going to build your own community. 10. Hand out the Create your own community worksheets. 11. Have the students cut out buildings, vehicles, and other things that can be found in a city to build their own community. 12. Have the students share their creations by posting them on the classroom bulletin board. 13. CLOSURE: Today, we discussed businesses in our community that provide goods and services. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? The students will identify businesses in our community. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will measure the students understanding of businesses in a community by the students group picture sorts. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think that having the students create their own community will be the easiest part of this lesson to teach. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I dont think that there will be a challenging part of this lesson to teach. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? Take the children on a bus tour of your community. Visit different businesses located there: For example, the post office, retail stores, banks, hardware store, phone company, or energy company. If it is not possible to visit, invite people from some of these businesses to visit the classroom; ask them to talk about their businesses and why they are important to the community. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? I will re-teach any concepts that the students do not grasp. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? If the students cannot come up with their own category for the picture sorts, I may need to give them categories to sort their pictures in.

6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? I had a difficult time coming up with a good hands-on activity that would relate to the topic.
