CURTAINS
Curtains is a Musical, Murder Mystery, and a Comedy. It is about a western show and at the end of the
opening night, there is a murder. This sets off a wild and entertaining show about solving the murder along with some craziness and songs. WHEN: TUESDAY-FRIDAY JANUARY 8-11, 2013, @ 3:00 P.M.-CALL BACKS ON JANUARY 11, 2013 AT 3 P.M. WHERE: WHO: HE-5 and BLACK BOX THEATRE ANY Franklin High School Student with a 2.0 grade point average. You MUST maintain your grade point throughout the rehearsal and performance period IN ORDER TO BE IN THE SHOW. WHAT: Please be prepared to work in groups for movement. Bring your monologue or ask for a cold reading from the Stage Manager. Bring 16 bars of a song of music for your vocal audition. You will be taught a simple dance routing to perform. BRING: COMPLETE THE AUDITION FORM AND ATTACHED A SMALL PHOTO OF YOU PRIOR TO FIRST AUDITION DATE! SUGGESTIONS: Dress for auditions. Black attire works well or a natural color outfit. When you arrive at auditions, turn in completed audition form, take a number, and sit quietly in the theatre, AND WAIT FOR INSTRUCTIONS. Take a big deep breath and give it your best. CALLBACKS: FRIDAY, JANUARY 11, 2013, @ 3:00 PM. Check the list posted on the CLASSROOM DOOR OF HE-5 during school on FRIDAY MORNING TO SEE IF YOU HAVE BEEN CALLED BACK. At the callback, you will be asked to read from the script. Only students on the Callback List may attend. The cast list will be posted by FRIDAY evening on the door outside of HE 5, JANUARY 11TH & on theatre web site at http://www.franklintheatreassociation.com If you are NOT cast, please do not get discouraged. You may want to sign up TO TECH for the show! REHEARSALS: The 1st rehearsal: HEAD SHOTS AND MEASUREMENTS WILL BE TAKEN DURING THE SECOND OR THIRD WEEK. For ALL CURTAINS cast to attend is JANUARY 14, 2013 @ 3:15-6:30 P.M. in the Black Box Theatre. See Below for Script Pickup. The first rehearsal is mandatory. If you cannot make it, we may have to recast your part. Make sure to make arrangements to attend. PERFORMANCES : MARCH 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 2013 AT 7 P.M. WITH MATINEES ON MARCH 16 & 23 AT 2:00 P.M. You must be available for all performances. Check to make sure your schedules are free. SCRIPTS: All cast members can pick up a copy of their scripts on MONDAY, 1/14/2013 during or after school in Room HE5.

These shows are supported by the Franklin Theatre Association (FTA), a FHS Booster Club. A special meeting for all parents will be held on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 to inform them about these productions. Meeting will begin at 7:30 P.M. in the theatre.

3) ELEMENTS THAT CAN BE PART OF AN AUDITION:

An audition is where the panel of reviewers will view your application, advise the show director their opinions of the auditioners; and they will help develop a call back list when required. Some of the following but necessary all are required for some shows. For these shows, the boxes on the left are marked if they are required for these shows auditions. What is an Audition: An Audition is an interview where you demonstrate your acting, singing, and dance abilities The Auditioners present their material to the panel of reviewers. 1) Monologue: This is your acting interview. This can be a monologue you have prepared, cold reading of a script (also can be from show script), or some form chosen by the director of the show to demonstrate your acting skills. You act every day, when youre sad, happy, excited, when you meet someone, when you talk with any person being a friend, teacher, adult. Dont be nervous; just let yourself perform to the words and situation just like in life. Singing: This is your song interview. Auditioners may sing a song of their choice (bring music for pianist) or sing A cappella, in some cases, the director may have prechosen songs for you to sing. What is the panel looking for: Singing is the act of producing musical sounds with the voice, and augments regular speech by the use of both tonality and rhythm. . While there are many aspect of a singing voice, the panel is interested in the range of the voice, tone, type of classification of a voice (Bass, Baritone, Tenor, MezzoSoprano, or Soprano). Each person should do their best and leave the decision of the director how to place a voice in a show. A singing show requires many voices and each character has a singing voice to meet the requirements of music. Dance: This is your dance interview. Dancing is moving rhythmically to music, typically following a set sequence of steps. While there are many types and forms of dancing, typically in a musical show, dance is set by the Choreographer. Choreography is the art of designing sequences of movements in which motion, form, or both are specified. Choreography may also refer to the design itself, which is sometimes expressed by means of dance notation. The word choreography literally means "dancewriting" from the Greek words "" (circular dance) and "" (writing). A choreographer is one who creates choreographies. a. For your dance interview, you will be taught a choreographed sequence to music. Then in small groups you will perform what you learned. The panel will see how will you do and how well you learned the steps. How well you are moving to the music. Again, depending on the show character and show requirements, the director will place actors as required.

What do I need to bring to an audition? 1) Music 16 Bars 2) Monologue about 1 minute 3) Audition Application completely filled out and signed by teachers & parents, including a small photo of yourself 4) When turning in your COMPLETE FILLED OUT Audition Application, you will receive a number; the number is the order for auditioning. 5) Snack and water What time will be involved in the Audition? 1) Auditions time: Auditions begin at 3:30 P.M. until everyone has been seen to about 6:30 P.M. Call backs may last until 8:00 P.M. CAST LIST WILL BE POSTED: 1) Casting will be posted on the door of HE5 and you must sign to accept, also 2) Casting will be listed on the theatre web site: www.franklintheatreassociation.com What is required for rehearsals? 1) First rehearsal is Introduction and read thru of script. More information will be provided at this rehearsal. 2) Rehearsals will be every week night (with a few exceptions) and you are required to attend ALL rehearsals. 3) The following Saturdays are planned to learn choreography a. January 26, 2013 from 1 to 6 PM b. Feb 2, 2012 This is a tentative date depending on Lenaea Festival activities (if this date used, time is 1-6 PM) c. February 23, 2012 1-6 PM 4) Need a pencil and paper 5) Bring a snack and drink to rehearsal. PARENT CAST MEETING There will be a mandatory meeting for all parents and cast member on January 23, 2013 at 7:30 P.M. in the Black box Theatre. This is an important meeting and everyone is asked to attend.

ABOUT CURTIANS
Curtains is a musical with a book by Rupert Holmes, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and music by John Kander, with additional lyrics by Kander and Holmes. Based on the original book and concept by Peter Stone, the musical is a send-up of backstage murder mystery plots, set in 1959 Boston, Massachusetts and follows the fallout when the supremely untalented star of Robbin' Hood of the Old West is murdered during her opening night curtain call. It is up to a police detective, who moonlights as a musical theater fan to save the show, solve the case, and maybe even find love before the show reopens, without getting killed himself.

LIEUTENANT FRANK CIOFFI (40s): Local Boston detective who is also a musical theatre aficionado. Aside from being exceptionally good at his job, he has also aspired to be a musical theatre performer his entire life. He falls in love with Niki. NIKI HARRIS (20s-early 30s): Pretty, nave ingnue. Niki is a chorus girl/understudy in the chorus of the show-within-the-show during its Boston tryout. She aspires to make it as a performer on Broadway. She meets and falls in love with Dt. Frank Cioffi who is investigating a murder at the theatre. GEORGIA HENDRICKS (30s): Female half of our songwriting team. Ends up taking on the leading lady role. CARMEN BERNSTEIN (45-65): Brassy Broadway producer, unhappily married to Sidney. AARON FOX (40s): The composer of the show-within-the-show. His songwriting partner, Georgia, is also his wife from whom he's separated. He's a sexy, charming ladies man. BOBBY PEPPER (20s to early 30s): The choreographer and star male of the show within the show, he is Aaron's charming rival and the current boyfriend of Georgia. CHRISTOPHER BELLING (40-60): English director. Very camp. Very funny. BAMBI BERNT (Early 20s-early 30s): Performer in the chorus and daughter of Carmen, the lead producer. Hungry to work her way up to leading performer; some people think she was only hired because of her mother. An excellent dancer. DARYL GRADY (30s): A Theatre critic for the local Boston newspaper, he enjoys using the power he has to make or break shows during their out-of-town tryouts. JOHNNY HARMON (40s-50s): The Stage Manager of the show-within-the-show. Johnny is gruff but lovable. He keeps the company in line and on their toes throughout the rehearsal process. OSCAR SHAPIRO (45-65): The general manager and sole investor. An agreeable if slightly gruff man. He is always looking for any angle to find money. SIDNEY BERNSTEIN (Late 50s-Mid 60s): The co-producer of an out of town flop. Sidney is tough and self-serving. JESSICA CRANSHAW (30s-50s): Fading Hollywood star. A diva, who has no right to be one, she is a terrible singer and actress who stars in the show within a show and gets murdered on its opening night. SASHA ILJINSKY (30s-40s): The European conductor of the show within the show; can be played by the orchestra's actual conductor. RANDY DEXTER (20s-30s): One of the stars of the show within the show. HARV FREMONT (20s-30s): One of the stars of the show within the show, Randy's sidekick. DETECTIVE O'FARRELL (30s-40s): Cioffi's associate from the Boston Police Department, assists in the investigation And More.
