Brianna 615 The Survivor of the Wilderness This is an eventful adventure book called Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.

Hatchet is a Newberry Award winner, as are several of his other books. This is a story about a 13 year old boy named Brian Robeson. His parents are divorced because of the Secret and Brian knew about it. He got a hatchet from his mom on the way to the airport. Brian was headed to visit his dad, who was an engineer at an oil field in Canada. He was in a Cessna 406 bushplane when the pilot had a heart attack and died. Brian crashed into an L-shaped lake deep in the Canadian wilderness. This story shows that Brian is a survivor. At the beginning of the book, the pilot had a heart attack and Brian had to fly the plane. Firstly, Brian acted fast when he knew he had to fly the plane, and he did it even though he didnt know much about flying planes. Secondly, he was very smart to let the fuel run out of the plane, because if the plane had crash landed with fuel in it, the plane would have caught on fire and killed him. Finally, Brian knew he had to land in a lake or he would most surely die, because all the trees would have ripped apart the plane and he would have been thrown out of the plane and smash his skull. When Brian saw the L-shaped lake he crash landed and survived. Then Brian was really and truly alone in the Canadian wilderness. Later, in the middle of the book, Brian had to get some different food. To begin with, Brian really needed meat because he knew that sometime the raspberries would run out and they would not grow back until the next year, so he would have been super hungry, because he would have had nothing to eat. Secondly, Brian noticed the small fish in the lake and came up with the

idea to catch one. Next, he tried to catch the small fish with a spear but no matter how hard he tried he always missed them. After that, Brian realizes that the spear is not fast enough to catch them, so he made a bow and some arrows. Again, Brian misses the fish and does not have anything to eat when he remembers, that in school he had learned that water refracts, so that if he aimed low, he should be able to catch a fish and eat it. Finally, when he follows his own advice, he catches a fish, cooks it, and it was so good he ate 20 more. Brian was so happy to catch a fish and he eventually learned to catch them with the spear. Near the end of the book, Brian gets attacked by a crazy moose. First of all, Brian catches a foolbird and goes down to the lake to clean it. Secondly, a female moose felt very threatened and then charged him. Thirdly, when the moose got to him it tried to drown Brian in the lake and when he comes up for air it tried again. Lastly, Brian took the split second when the moose wasnt looking and inched away. Brian felt proud of himself for escaping but his ribs were hurting him. In conclusion, this story shows that Brian is a survivor. The following quote supports the fact that Brian is a survivor, because it shows and describes how long Brian had been thriving in the harsh wilderness. These are the words of the fur trader when he found Brian, Youre him, arent you? Youre that kid? They quit looking, a month, no almost two months ago. Youre him arent you? Youre that kid..
