Sean Doughty Instructor: Malcolm Campbell English 1102 2/04/13 Topic Proposal: Educated Technology Introduction/Overview I will be examining the denial of technological help in the school system, and if it is as necessary as teachers/ anti-technologists seem to believe. If technology has progressed to the point where much of basic concepts are easily done for us do we need to spend as much time on pounding in the facts? Schools are necessary in todays environment and always will be, and the learning of basic concepts is very important; however once these concepts have been taught and understood, why can we not use technology to achieve the same goal faster? If you have already learned how to read, why can you not read the sparknotes for a book if it has all the information required for the quiz or discussion of the topic? It is true that back in the day that was just how school was done; however just because it was good for back in the day, does not mean that it is still applicable to how we are taught now. Calculators can do whatever you ask them to so long as it has been programmed in. It is still important for us to learn to multiply, and divide and such but once that has been taught why continue to test without the calculator? If we understand the principle why drill in the tables? I challenge you to find one person in our society that cant find some sort of calculator to complete their task. Why are we deprived these resources that are guaranteed to be there when we enter the job world? Cant remember the derivative of arctangent? Five bucks says that Google could quickly provide you with an answer.

Comment [1]: When I first read this I was very confused about what your topic was. It might be beneficial to look at re-wording the second part of that sentence.

Comment [2]: However is a conjunctive adverb, used when combining to independent clauses. A semi-colon follows the first clause then however and then a comma. You can start sentences with however if youd like but it is generally accepted to keep it at a minimum.

Comment [3]: Word choice. I would try using something stronger like customary or the convention back in the day

Preliminary research done into the subject consist of my own observations from going through the school system and wondering why it was being taught the way it does. It seemed as though they had to learn how to teach the material because it wasnt very compatible with the modern class room setting. It appears that many groups are involved and it has been brought up before. A good video that explains the conundrum is located at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDZFcDGpL4U. It discusses how schooling could be considered out dated. Far from obsolete, but it is getting there, slowly and surly. Initial Inquiry Question(s) Why dont more college professors use technology that their students are using if they wish to understand us better? Why are students not allowed technological assistance at times during schools? If important historical happenings are easily available to find on the web, is as much emphasis required on these sorts of subjects? Are there really going to be times during our adult lives, realistically speaking, that we will not be able to use the internet? Do we need to reform our style of learning and teaching?

My Interest in this Topic 1. I am currently un-educated about my Topic. 2. I am interested in learning how the education system will change in the future with the introduction of increasingly sophisticated technology. Next Steps

I will be using Google scholar to search for articles pertaining to the influx of technology in our educational system. I will also be searching for articles that discuss possible reform of the educational system. In the library I will search for books and articles that dealt with how schooling was done in earlier years.

I enjoyed reading your paper; it seems like a very interesting topic. Besides view grammatical errors, it seems to be very well written. Are you going to focus on the education system has a whole or only high school or college? I think it would be interesting to look into the viewpoint of the teachers who oppose technology. It might be beneficial to interview a few teachers on campus. Im interested to see where you go with this.
