line to use a public pay phone to call
his date a coed with whom only
polite conversation would take place.
No liaisons, no attractions. The oats he
sewed were mild. He only risked coming
out once, quietly, to his straight little
brother in the fraternity. Much later in
life, Trammell would come to lead the
Lambda Alliance for LGBTQs, but, typical
of Trammell, he didnt drop his ties to
Lambda Chi. To this day he is thankful to
and a dear friend of his little brother
and sole condant, Dave Blount.
Trammell took one shot at wild
oats back then. It was a secret mission
into D.C. to check out the legendary
gay bar, Lost and Found. He arrived at
7 p.m. and entered solo. The bartender
just laughed and said, Come back at
11. The star senior hoopster was a
rookie in gay life so he anxiously sat out
in the parking lot. Once inside at the
stroke of 11, he saw men dancing with
men. As he puts it, Breathtaking. But,
across the crowded dance oor he
spotted the captain of the tennis
team, and frightened, he slunk into the
shadows, which is not easy at 67.
Like many southern boys,
Trammell relies on those immortal
words from Steel Magnolias: That
which doesnt kill us makes us stronger.
And strong is an understatement. Settled
down with Stuart Serkin, his husband
with whom he has danced for 36 years,
they laugh at having met taking the
Florida Bar exam and Serkin had
to coax out of Trammell that his great
uncle was indeed that former Gov.
Trammell of Florida. Their rst date was
to see Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf
and here they are 36 years later
watching the potential reality horror
show Whos Afraid of Virginia Under
Ken Cuccinelli? But, ever present in
their politics, both are at the barricades
working for Democratic gubernatorial
candidate Terry McAuliffe.
Trammell has worked for Democrats
on Capitol Hill for decades, run LGBT
outreach for both the Al Gore and
John Kerry campaigns and gone toe-
to-toe on gay issues with the likes of
Sean Hannity and Bill OReilly on Fox
News. Throughout his life, he has always
stayed involved in William & Mary
alumni affairs. Last year, he agreed once
again to mentor an undergrad this
time Davey McKissick, a senior whose
experiences are quite different.
First off, McKissicks books and phone
are both on his iPad, and literally
balanced in the palm of his hand. In
his other hand? His boyfriends. No
pay phones, no book bags, no coed
beards. And if McKissick were single
and ran into a gay tennis player, he
wouldnt feel the need to run away. He
leads an authentic life. He has learned
his gay history through documentaries,
lectures at W&M and through
Trammell. His ambition was to intern in
D.C. and among the 15,000 alumni in
the D.C. area, hes sitting at Trammell
and Company with Jeff the rst
openly gay board chair (rector) of a
major university.
William & Mary elected the rst openly
gay board chair of a major university
in the United States. It didnt happen
in Cambridge, Berkley or Madison. It
happened in Williamsburg, Va. I owe it all
to the GALA students and faculty at the
university, Trammell said. They created
the climate for this to happen. There are
many reasons to look up to this former
basketball star, and his height isnt even
at the top of the list. Start with McKissicks
gay hero, Barney Frank. It so happens that
Trammell co-founded Stonewall Democrats
with Frank, so the next thing you know,
bang, McKissick is shaking hands with his
hero. McKissick is interested in LGBT
outreach at the DNC, and poof, hes sitting
in the director, Jeff Marootians ofce,
working the Obama-Biden campaign.
When not mentoring students, Trammell
can be found funding LGBT lectures at
W&M with Chris Bram, fellow alum and
the author of Gods and Monsters, or
helping to fund the Boswell Project,
named for John Boswell, class of 1969
the historian of same-sex relationships
in the middle ages. Ironically, Boswell
was lost in the AIDS plague. Or you
can nd Trammell working with David
Mixner on the gay issues documented
in the U.S. Holocaust Museum. Hes been
appointed to the board of the Association
of Governing Boards of Universities and
Colleges, which represents 38,000+
trustees across the U.S. Hes answering his
Blade interview questions at 1 a.m. and
then at press time, hes on the front page of
the Washington Post dealing with the new
tuition structure. Throughout, his trips to
Williamsburg and Richmond are frequent.
Back in Williamsburg, McKissick
has already navigated the same gauntlet
of traditions Trammell did swimming
the Crim Dell pond, jumping the wall of
the Governors Mansion, and running
the Sunken Gardens. But today, gay
campus life is lived in Technicolor with
Pride festivals, movie nights and the
occasional drag show. There are safe
zones throughout campus, letting
LGBT students know they are welcome.
Reecting on all this change, Trammell
recalls his mothers reaction late in life to
his coming out post-college.
Well, she was very WASPy and southern
and that adds up to being polite,
Trammell said. She said Oh, honey, Ive
known that for a long time. Now, we dont
need to talk about it.
He got unconditional love, but
conditional parameters for discussing it.
McKissicks answer to the question about
his straight heroes is heart-warming. He
answers: Betty and Ron. That would
be his parents, the McKissicks.
I could not ask for more supportive
inuences in my life, he said. They
motivate me to set high goals for
myself and to be relentless in achieving
them. Betty and Ron have no problem
talking with or about their son.
Its remarkable to see Davey is fully
out and authentic, things not possible
for me back then, Trammell said. I
think no matter what the size of your
alma mater, gay alums should get back
involved and support their students.
As rector, he will ofciate
commencement at William & Mary
Hall this summer, on the same oor he
played his rst basketball game.
The college marks 1918 as
admitting the rst woman student and
1951 the rst African American. Gays
have been there since 1693, but the
price to pay for being admitted was no
admission of who you were. Those
days are steadily fading behind us.
Because of its history, W&M has been
called the alma mater of a nation:
Hark the students voices swelling
Strong and true and clear
Alma Maters love their telling
Ringing far and near
Today, each students voice is strong
and clear. Liaisons arent dangerous
and attractions arent fatal to your
reputation. LGBT alumni proudly join
Glenn Close in a visceral connection that
has sustained them all through the years.
And so, even from a famed Sunken
Garden, when hes standing on
Trammells shoulders, McKissick can see
nothing but rainbows in a clear blue sky
ahead of him.

Health ofcials monitoring
meningitis cases
SAN DIEGO Health ofcials in several major cities have made recommendations
to gay and bi residents in recent weeks about getting vaccinated against the
meningitis that has killed seven men in New York since 2010 and two in Los
Angeles since December.
In San Diego County seven cases of meningitis have been reported but thats
considered lower than normal, the San Diego Gay & Lesbian News reported last
week. None of them involved men who have sex with men (MSM), the paper
reported citing ofcials from the San Diego County Health & Human Services
Agency.
Toronto Public Health ofcials have urged residents there to get vaccinated
if they plan on traveling to New York City, the Toronto Star reported last week,
despite no known cases in Canada.
Ofcials in Dallas say theyre monitoring the disease, which results in an
inammation of protective membranes around the brain and spinal column and
can result in headaches, u, fever and nausea.
We did not ring the bell quick enough with HIV, said Bret Camp, a regional
director with AIDS Healthcare Foundation Texas, in a comment to Dallas Voice, a
gay paper there.
In Washington, Whitman-Walker Health is advising all gay and bi men who
meet the criteria set forth by the New York City Department of Health to be
vaccinated.
The criteria are: any gay man or MSM who is at least 18 years of age, regardless
of HIV status and has had intimate contact with a man they met through a website
(Manhunt, Adam4Adam, etc.), ditial application (Grindr, Scruff, etc.), a bar or a
party since Sept. 1, 2012 or plan such contact in the future.
Whitman-Walker patients can request the vaccine from their individual provider.
Non-Whitman-Walker patients should contact their provider to be vaccinated.

Health disparities in older people of color
CHICAGO A report released last week from SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders)
explored the health disparities faced by LGBT older people of color and offers policy solutions
in 10 areas to address the ndings, the Windy City Times, a gay Chicago paper, reported.
The study, dubbed Health Equity and LGBT Elders of Color, found that LGBT elders
of color are historically marginalized on multiple fronts and their needs are often under-
addressed in the mainstream aging eld and in the popular LGBT rights movement,
according to Michael Adams, SAGEs executive director.
Among the areas targeted were linguistic competence, federal funding for needs-
targeted programming, stronger Social Security, decreasing elder abuse, secure and
affordable housing and access to safe and necessary care for transgender seniors.
The full report is available from sageusa.org.
Younger MSMs face increased challenges: study
SAN DIEGO A new study indicates that young men who have sex with men around
the world experience higher levels of homophobia, unstable housing, violence and other
factors that hinder access to HIV services compared to older MSM, the San Diego Gay &
Lesbian News reported last week.
Researchers said this was the rst study that looked at data focused on younger men
as opposed to studying all MSM groups together.
Using data from a 2012 study that polled 5,779 young MSMs (30 and younger) from 165
countries, the study found that only 33 percent of those surveyed reported that low-cost
condoms were easily accessible and only 18 percent said they had access to low-cost
lubricants, low-cost STI treatment (14 percent), HIV education materials (9 percent) and
HIV risk reduction programs (7 percent).
Rates for HIV treatment for those infected in some instances were as high as 44 percent
not taking any anti-retroviral medication compared with 17 percent for older MSMs.
Twenty percent said they had no income and 30 percent had no stable housing. They
also experienced greater levels of homophobia and violence, the report said.
Conversion therapy debated in California
SAN FRANCISCO A federal appeals court in California last week grappled with a
proposed ban on therapy that claims to be able to change a minors sexual orientation
and whether the issue was one of free speech or a mere regulation of medical treatment,
the Los Angeles Times reported.
A three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals considered two lower-
court rulings that reached opposite conclusions about the constitutionality of the new
state law which would penalize licensed health professionals who engage in ex-gay
therapy, the paper said.
The California law banning so-called conversion therapy, the rst of its kind in the
country, was supposed to have taken effect in January. But therapists and families
challenged it, and the 9th Circuit put it on holding pending a ruling, which is expected in
a few months, the Times reported.

Regular snacks, hydration
key to healthful eating
Did you hear that? Yes, that
embarrassing growl in my stomach. Im
sure Im not pregnant, but right now I
feel like I need to eat for two. Many
days by mid-morning or late afternoon
it feels like I havent had a bite of food
in years, but I just ate a few hours back.
Does this sound familiar? Though
our bodies come in different shapes
and sizes, one thing we all encounter is
the craving monster. For me, he usually
comes in two different levels. Level one
is the monster that prefers a healthful
meal, but must have it within exactly
15 minutes from when he shows up. If
this level one status is not handled then
major problems can occur. I immediately
have to get to the nearest Burger King
for a double whopper value meal.
In these times of desperation
I nd myself wondering how this
happened. Despite what my gure may
suggest, I, too, have occasionally fallen
from grace into this craving mode and
yielded to the temptations of the worst
foods out there. The reason we reach
for these high-calorie meals in times
of high stress, emotion or hunger goes
way back in time. During our nomad
and caveman days, times of stress or
hunger triggered chemicals in our blood
that told our brain that we need dense
calories ASAP. Unfortunately, our bodies
did not get the memo that we now have
grocery stores and dont need to take in
as many calories as possible in a hurry.
This leads us to race to our version of a
fresh kill fast food.
Luckily over the years I have learned
some rules I live by that can also help
you on your road to six-pack abs and
healthy eating.
Rule no. 1: Never get Hungry. What I
mean by this is for you to time out your
meals as best as possible so that you
are eating small meals through out the
day. In general I try to eat every three
hours.
Rule no. 2: Never get Thirsty. This one is
a little more manageable. You should be
pumping water constantly throughout
the day to avoid dehydration. Many
of our so-called hunger cravings are
actually hydration cravings. Next time
you feel that craving coming on, try
chugging eight ounces of water and
see if it dissipates. I set an alarm every
two hours on my phone to help remind
me to maintain liquid intake throughout
the day. One thing many people dont
realize is that once you feel thirsty you
are already dehydrated even during
exercise. Before exercise, hyper-hydrate
two to three hours prior and just take
small sips every few minutes during your
workout. This will help you to maintain
hydration and therefore avoid cravings
post workout
Rule no. 3: Keep Snack Stashes. I
am constantly grazing throughout the
day. My friends wonder where I keep
them. I suggest keeping emergency
healthful snacks everywhere. I have
at least three cans of nuts in my car,
emergency protein shake powder in
my work and gym bags and I even have
hidden a few granola bars in case I get
hungry between classes. You may look
silly at rst having stashes of snacks, but I
promise you wont look silly this summer
when its time to take your shirt off.
The key to snacking is to remember
its just a snack so use it to hold you over
until you can make it to a healthful meal.
The bottom line is that nine times out of
10, a hungry mind leads to a hefty mid-
section so feed your machine.
Follow these snacking tips for a hot summer body.
Three tips for
conquering cravings

How umbilical cord blood is
transforming research
Last week, doctors in Minnesota
performed a rst-ever procedure on a
young boy that could lead to nding
a cure for both HIV and leukemia.
This case is similar to that of Timothy
Ray Brown (also known as the Berlin
Patient), a founder of our organizations,
the Timothy Ray Brown Foundation and
the World AIDS Institute. If successful, it
will be the rst time a person has been
cured of HIV as a direct result of an
umbilical cord blood transplant.
Both procedures used blood cells
from a human donor with CCR5 Delta 32
negative, a genetic deformity; persons
born with the abnormality are naturally
resistant to HIV. Timothys procedure,
which was performed in Berlin, used
stem cells instead of umbilical cord cells.
Fortunately, the German health care
system supports access to multiple
matches of CCR5 Delta 32 negative stem
cell donors. In the case of the Minnesota
child, because no CCR5 Delta 32 negative
stem cell procedure has yet to be tried in
the United States, the medical team used
an umbilical cord blood match.
An hour before the boys cord blood
transplant procedure, Timothy and I
had an emotional discussion with Dr.
John Wagner, head of the medical
team at the University of Minnesota
medical center. Dr. Wagner and
Timothy discussed the differences and
similarities in the procedures, as well
as a sad truth: In the United States,
doctors face near-insurmountable
barriers to obtaining Food and Drug
Administration clearance for such
groundbreaking procedures.
The use of umbilical cord blood is still
controversial in this country, with most
of the opposition fueled by politics
and religion. Today, Dr. Wagner told us,
there is a very small amount of umbilical
cord blood being released or available
for medical procedures such as the one
performed last week. His team was
permitted access to only a small fraction
of cord blood.
What if cord blood were more readily
available? Consider the immediate
and long-term impact on all sorts of
diseases, beyond leukemia and HIV.
An hour after the procedure was
completed, Timothy called the young
boy to wish him all the success in the
world for a good and speedy recovery.
When I had my procedure done, I got
caught up in the trap of lying around in
my bed in the hospital watching television
and not exercising, Timothy told the boy.
Make sure as soon as you are able, get
out of bed and do some exercise, go do
what you love, go play some basketball.
Timothy said he could hear the boys
mother and team of doctors laughing, as
they seconded the sound strategy.
Timothys procedure has been
performed on others in Germany, but
none has survived. It became almost too
much, Timothy said. I would receive
one phone call after another letting me
know another patient who received the
same procedure I did had passed away.
In many cases, the leukemia and HIV
was just too much for their frail bodies.
In all cases, there were multiple stem cell
donors available for each patient. But
that was in Germany, not here.
It is unfortunate the United States
puts political and religious beliefs
over potential life-saving scientic and
medical discoveries. We have so much
to be proud of in our country as it relates
to science and medicine and also much
cause for shame. In the case of the
boy in Minnesota and Timothy Ray
Brown, both could have said no to the
groundbreaking procedures. Instead,
they said yes, giving a major push to
nding a cure for HIV for everyone.
What is really quite beautiful is the
impact of physical hardship on the
human spirit a man and a boy now
share virtually the same experience
medically, yet its also different. One
received stem cells from an adult, the
other umbilical cord blood from a baby.
However in the end, it very well may be
that Timothy Ray Brown, the rst person
ever cured of HIV, now will have more
company. More important ly, he has a
new friend and a potential new leader
who might understand what its like to
be cured of AIDS.

Pay attention to symptoms,
as quick treatment is vital
There has been growing concern in
the community in recent weeks about a
number of cases of bacterial meningitis
among gay men in New York City and
Los Angeles.
Whitman-Walker Health is and always
has been dedicated to helping protect
the health of the LGBT community.
While we encourage people to pay
attention to these cases and to take
proper precautions to protect your
health, we do want to make sure you
have the correct information to take
care of yourself.
Bacterial meningitis is not a gay
disease as anyone can acquire the
infection and it will tend to spread
through communities. To date, New
York City has reported 22 meningitis
cases and seven deaths among gay
men since 2010. Los Angeles has
reported three meningitis deaths in gay
men since December.
There have currently been no cases
of meningitis among gay and bisexual
men in D.C. If such an outbreak does
occur, the citys Department of Health
will issue a warning.
The most common symptoms of
meningitis are stiff neck, headache
and fever. Other potential symptoms
include nausea, vomiting, confusion
or disorientation, sensitivity to light
or noise and a rash. The symptoms
of bacterial meningitis can appear
quickly or over several days. Typically
they develop within three to seven
days after exposure. If you have any of
these symptoms, please see a health
care provider right away. If you do have
meningitis, immediate treatment is vital.
Meningitis is transmitted from person
to person through exposure to an
infected persons oral uids. This could
be from kissing, coughing or sneezing. It
can also be transmitted through sharing
eating utensils or drinking glasses.
There is a vaccine for bacterial meningitis.
We currently have the meningitis vaccine in
stock for our patients.
The New York Department of Health
and Gay Mens Health Crisis have
released the following criteria for who
should be vaccinated in New York. If you
are a gay man or a MSM, you should
consider being vaccinated: Regarding
who should receive the vaccine during
this outbreak, any gay man or MSM who
is at least 18 years of age, regardless of
HIV status, and has had intimate contact
with a man they met through a website
(Manhunt, Adam 4 Adam, etc.), digital
application (GRINDR, SCRUFF, etc.), a bar,
or a party since September 1, 2012 or plan
on having such contact in the future.
WWH is monitoring the situation
across the country, along with the D.C.
Department of Health. We are also
actively monitoring our patients for any
signs of meningitis.
If an outbreak does occur in D.C., we
will work with the Department of Health to
ensure the general public will be able to
come to Whitman-Walker for vaccination.
If you are a gay man or a MSM,
especially someone who travels
frequently, you can request the vaccine
from your health care provider.
We will keep you abreast of all
developments in order to keep the
community healthy.

D.C. voters reject Maras
Republican politics
Congratulations to Anita Bonds on
her win for Council member at-large.
Congratulations also to Elissa Silverman
for running a good campaign and I hope
she will stay involved in politics and get
more involved in community affairs. As
for Patrick Mara, this marks his third loss
and I hope that he will be successful in
his career as he moves on with his life,
his new wife and expected child. Pat is a
nice guy but his politics were shown to
be just wrong for D.C. voters.
Like many, I was disappointed in the
small turnout. Maybe those voters who
stayed home are happy with every-
thing. In many ways the District under
the leadership of Mayor Gray is doing
better than it ever has before. We are
scally solvent and envied by cities and
states across the nation. The economy
is booming with 55 cranes up across
the District in every ward building both
commercial space and new rental apart-
ments and condos. The mayor has sub-
mitted a balanced budget to the Coun-
cil with pay increases for city workers
for the rst time in years; $100 million
for affordable housing; $15 million for
competitive grants for small non-prots;
funding for libraries to remain open sev-
en days a week; a capital budget that
addresses the renovation of the MLK
library, additional new and renovated
schools, rebuilding and renovating of
parks and recreation centers and all
without any increase in taxes or fees. In
fact there are certain tax reductions such
as getting rid of the tax on other than
D.C. municipal bonds and the elimina-
tion of the double tax on those who own
cooperative apartments in the District.
There is much that still needs to be
done and it is important for residents to
give voice to their ideas on how to move
forward. There are complaints about
not enough police; the need for more
ambulances; and a host of issues from
what to do about the homeless popula-
tion to how to improve our schools.
This was a special election to ll the
seat vacated by Phil Mendelson who
won as Council chair last November. It is
possible people felt the winner was only
being elected for 1.5 years and would
have to run again next year so they
didnt bother to come out. Or they were
unhappy with all the candidates and
therefore stayed home. Or the media
didnt pay enough attention to the can-
didates, or the candidates were boring
or some other reason.
What some forgot was that there was
another important issue on the ballot
and that was whether the District should
have budget autonomy. That means
Congress could not interfere with the
part of the D.C. budget passed by the
Council and signed by the mayor that
dealt with the money coming from our
own tax collections. That ballot mea-
sure, which won with 84 percent of the
vote, could be a major step forward for
District independence. It could mean
we wont be totally beholden to Con-
gress every time they have a budget
stalemate like the one we have now.
Beginning today and moving for-
ward the people of the District need
to make their voices heard. Bonds will
now have a vote on a host of issues in-
cluding the mayors budget; issues re-
lated to the new healthcare exchange
mandated by the Affordable Care Act;
determining how or if to vote on new
ethics reform; whether to make sur-
rogacy contracts in the District legal;
regulatory reform; and so many other
issues that no one ever really asked her
about during the election.
Voters and the media appeared to
accept the contest being run on the
platitudes given to us by most of the
candidates. I do have faith that Bonds
will work hard but her seat, along with
that of many other council members,
is up again next year so vigilance and
oversight on what all our Council mem-
bers do remains an important role for
all of us.

Owner Franco honored for
Excellence in Business
The clothes have changed since the
rst store opening 20 years ago.
As Universal Gear celebrates its plati-
num anniversary on Saturday with an
all-day customer appreciation event,
serving Champagne and cake and giv-
ing away $20 gift cards with purchases
of $100 or more, one trend is still in
vogue. The mens clothing establish-
ment remains a landmark commercial
enterprise and an ever-popular retail
destination for mens casual dress and
athletic wear.
The Capital Area Gay and Lesbian
Chamber of Commerce this month
honored co-founder and owner Da-
vid Franco with the organizations 2013
Excellence in Business award. In ac-
cepting the honor at the CAGLCC an-
nual dinner last week, Franco noted that
the longtime success of the business is
measured by the relationships we de-
velop and the sense of community with
those we serve.
On Saturday, April 24, 1993, during
the weekend of the March on Wash-
ington for Lesbian, Gay and Bi Equal
Rights and Liberation that attracted
nearly a million people to the National
Mall, the rst customers lined the blocks
outside a new clothing store catering
to gay men. Located above the former
Trumpets Restaurant and Lounge at
the corner of 17th and Q streets, where
Franco was also a business partner, the
then-named Off Gear was at the epi-
center of the citys gay business district
in the Dupont Circle area.
Once inside, seasonal club wear of-
ferings of the era were quickly snatched
up a pair of Daisy Duke frayed-hem
denim shorts, printed vest or tan nubuck
construction boots with stripe-accented
white athletic socks among them in
preparation for going out later. In fact,
Franco recalls the wildly successful store
launch as akin to a nightclub opening.
With D.C. overowing with locals and
visitors for the gay rights event, it was
a momentous chapter in local LGBT
history and a frenetic time for Franco.
Launching the store in less than six
months with then business partner and
former architect Keith Clark, now an art-
ist in Ft. Lauderdale, the entrepreneurial
duo sped toward a grand opening coin-
ciding with the equality march.
Franco additionally served as co-
chair of the Spring to Life mega-
dance party at the Old Post Ofce Pavil-
ion that night beneting the march and
AIDS research. He was also a partner at
the time in the legendary former Tracks
nightclub that hosted round-the-clock
events throughout the weekend.
After a brief foray adding womens
fashions at a second suburban Rockville
location that prompted a name change
to Universal Gear, the original store
expanded to include an upper level in
1996. Refocusing exclusively on mens-
wear, the addition of successful stores
in Chicago, Atlanta and the rst of what
are now two New York City locations
over the next ve years followed. A Re-
hoboth Beach store opened in 2011.
Seismic cultural shifts including
gradual dissolution of gay ghettos
and growth in online shopping options,
along with the recession, led to store
closings in Atlanta and Chicago after a
decade of brisk business. In November
2008, the D.C. store followed its custom-
ers to Logan Circle, opening a spacious
retail space in a new mixed-use build-
ing on 14th Street. A second Manhattan
location was launched in Hells Kitchen
last spring. In-store celebrations are
scheduled at all four current locations.
The D.C. store will move north on
14th Street in December to storefront
space in a new residential building be-
ing built near U Street by the real estate
development rm Franco operates with
a business partner.
Proud of this weekends milestone,
Franco leads Universal Gear into a third
decade adapting to, and reecting, the
constant changes in the marketplace of
fashion and the communities it serves.
From bus riding and foot
washing to gay bashing
A friend, a lapsed Catholic, was at the
family home for her mothers funeral.
Her sister called from the mothers bed-
room, Lisa, where is Moms statue of
The Infant of Prague? Lisas partner, a
lapsed Congregationalist, looked puz-
zled, The impotent frog?
The Infant of Prague statue was the
American Boy Doll of my Catholic child-
hood in the 50s. My mother had an
eight-inch statue of the IOP under a
glass dome on her beloved Ethan Al-
len sideboard. The cherubic child with
the ornate dresses and enviable golden
curls, held up two ngers of the right
hand, not in a victory sign, more an iPad
swipe. In the left hand, the child held an
orb that looked a lot like the decora-
tive but dusty, gold-banded Courvoisier
bottle lled with blue -colored water in
the musty pine-paneled basement bar
my parents never used. My Dad was so
not Mad Men.
Like the American Girl Doll, the IOP
came with his own infant-icon back sto-
ry. The statues lineage is an extended
episode of Antiques Roadshow. The
original wax-coated wooden statue has
been traced back through Polish Prin-
cesses and Papal patents to Teresa of
Avila, a major mystic and heavy-hitting
self-agellator during the Inquisition.
Congratulations! Youve got something
there!
It is not clear from my own extensive
wiki-search how the IOP, heirloom of
Polish nobility and mascot of the Car-
melites, came to be the patron saint
of felicitous weather. Even today I hear
otherwise secular planners of family re-
unions, gay weddings and outdoor fun-
draisers say they have, turned the stat-
ue around in hopes of good weather.
Just in case.
Our family IOP is quite antique. If
I could nd him, I would put him on a
lazy Susan on the windowsill. It has spun
through many shifting winds of differ-
ent papacies just in my lifetime: Pius XII
the anti-Semitic dried apple head pope;
John XXIII who opened the Vatican win-
dows to let in some air; John Paul who
installed double-paned Anderson win-
dows then locked them tight, and Bene-
dict XVI who put bars on the windows
and installed a better alarm system. I
only wish I had paid more attention to
the Roman numerals. Id be such a bet-
ter crossword puzzle solver.
Pope Francis I certainly started off
his papacy with some hopeful gestures:
bus-riding, soccer loving, papal crowd
surng, prisoner foot-washing. Unlike
ex-Benedict, he didnt seem to scare the
children. But soon the Pope was kicking
the nuns off his bus, and espousing the
Papal party line of the glories of celibacy
and evils of homosexuality. Turns out it
was all atmospherics. The impotent fog.

Its vital to support those
ghting for equality
By CELINA GERBIC & LEE GRANADOS
Girl. Friend. Female. Mom. Tomboy.
When we were in elementary school,
there wasnt a name for what we were or
who we were friends with. When we were
in college, it was a term that was equally
offensive to both us and our gay friends,
fag hag. Thankfully there is now a term
(do we thank the PC movement for this?)
that we can proudly use: straight ally. We
didnt actually realize that the term had
come into use, we just simply went on do-
ing what weve always been doing, which
is not letting labels get in the way. Yet this
is one label that were proud is sticking.
Our children have grown up in Du-
pont Circle, a welcoming community
of all groups, and do not see the need
for such a label. To them, everyone is
equal, or should be. They have friends
with two dads, friends with two moms,
friends with one mom or dad, and yes,
even friends with both a mom and a
dad. They dont question that diversity.
One of the rst weddings they attended
was the wedding of their friends two
dads, right after D.C. started allowing
same-sex marriages. So why the need
for a label like straight ally?
Having grown up in a world with a great
deal of prejudice and a best friend who is
gay (though he wasnt saying that at the
time he was denitely not out), we recog-
nize the need for straight allies. Whether you
like having a label or not, its vital to stand up
for what you believe in, and support people
who should have the same rights as me and
other straight people, but using the term
straight ally goes beyond that and actu-
ally shows your support. Adding the term
ally says so much. It says we support our
friends, our colleagues, our community. It
tells our children, and others, that we dont
want to just be on the sidelines, looking on,
but rather, completely involved.
And involved we are as straight al-
lies. After working on Straight Ally Out-
reach and fundraising for the Point Foun-
dation for the last several years, Celina
joined Points Washington, D.C. regional
board of trustees. Point Foundation pro-
vides scholarships and mentoring to LG-
BTQ students, allowing them to achieve
their full academic and leadership po-
tential despite the obstacles often put
before them. Lee spent time building
an inclusive community at Ross Elemen-
tary School, running logistics for Capital
Pride, and starting the 17th Street Fes-
tival that has embraced the whole com-
munity, old and new. Participating in
Points Regional Leadership Forum and
hearing the scholars speak at the annual
D.C. Cornerstone Event has shown just
how important it is to include straight
allies in supporting these missions. Lee
saw that embracing families in a small
public school was the best way to edu-
cate her children and other families on
the benets of looking past labels.
As members of the host committee
for the Point Foundations upcoming
Cornerstone Event in May, we believe
everyone deserves the right to an educa-
tion, and this is something that everyone
should be supporting, regardless of your
label. It also sets the stage for our future
generations, including our children, who
are proud of their straight ally moms. As
straight allies, we owe it to our children to
proudly support our friends, colleagues
and relatives. There may be a day when
labels are no longer necessary, but for
now, were sticking with straight ally.

Straight ally: A label thats sticking
Women, LGBT people
susceptible to public attacks
By PATRICK McNEIL
Its April and Im glad the weather is toler-
able. I love taking walks and I love spending
time outside. Its beautiful, but warmer tem-
peratures unfortunately also mean more
opportunities for street harassment.
Its a blessing and a curse.
For women and LGBTQ individu-
als (and those perceived to be LGBTQ),
street harassment is a systemic, year-long
problem, but were reminded at this time
every year, when we engage in public
interaction with greater frequency, how
large of a problem it is.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness &
Prevention Month and earlier this month
was International Anti-Street Harassment
Week, a week during which activists work
to raise awareness about how serious of an
issue street harassment is. The event began
two years ago as one day, an initiative start-
ed by Stop Street Harassment founder Hol-
ly Kearl. For the past two years, hundreds of
organizations from around the globe have
participated in weeklong movements.
As a gay man living in one of the gayest
cities in America (and the gayest state), Ive
been particularly interested in the public ha-
rassment of this community. While my mas-
ters thesis covered only gay and bisexual
men, I am part of the community and an ally
to everyone in the community. I dont want
anyone to experience street harassment.
Unfortunately, we do. Recently, the New
York Times published a piece about the
unfair treatment of transgender individuals
by police ofcers in New York. I shed a tear
while reading the article, a cruel reminder
that, if youre in public and not cis gender,
youre likely to be harassed. For gay men
and lesbians, too, public displays of femi-
ninity and masculinity that at least border on
gender non-conforming result in verbal as-
saults. And sometimes it gets physical.
Earlier this month in Paris, a gay cou-
ple was brutally beaten for holding hands
in public. And this isnt uncommon. Cou-
ples in the LGBTQ community are con-
stantly required to negotiate a desire for
visibility while recognizing the very real
dangers of being out in public. Couples
are reminded all the time that their pres-
ence is unwanted in public spaces. Its a
great source of stress and something thats
always on our minds, coupled or alone. In
fact, according to my own research, about
71 percent of gay and bisexual men con-
stantly assess their surroundings when
navigating public spaces.
And were reminded in examples like
these that our struggles are unique. When
a heterosexual woman is accompanied by
her partner, her chances of being harassed
go down. For LGBTQ individuals the op-
posite happens. Ive been there. Ive been
harassed on the street and on the Metro for
holding hands with a guy. Its not news to
anyone that it happens, but it does happen
with alarming frequency.
The public harassment of LGBTQ in-
dividuals is also unfortunate because of
how different everyones identity develop-
ment looks. I didnt even come out to my-
self until college, but I was certainly bul-
lied growing up for being gay. I felt social
pressures and I felt uncomfortable. When
youre internally reconciling a queer iden-
tity and simultaneously being harassed
because of the identity you refuse to ac-
cept, life is not easy, and it can stall the
coming out process. One of my research
participants, even though he was out to
himself, delayed his coming out because
he knew his small-town Iowa peers would
adversely react. People shouldnt have
to hide their identities because they fear
public retribution.
And really, I cant say that I experience
street harassment every day, as I know many
women and many other LGBTQ individu-
als can. I dont have to experience it to feel
its effects, because I am always afraid. Im
afraid because its possible, because its
happened before and will happen again,
and because we live in a society where its
unfortunately normal and expected.
These problems wont be xed in a
week of activism and were likely not to
even make a dent. But we have to start
somewhere. Stop Street Harassment, re-
gional Hollaback organizations, and others
work year-round to combat the public ha-
rassment of women and LGBTQ folks, and
they need our help.
If youre harassed, share your story. The
more of us who speak out, the more atten-
tion it will get. Its about collectively ampli-
fying each others voices, about standing
in solidarity and saying that this isnt OK.
Its about human rights and creating social
spaces where all humans are free from this
form of public harassment.

D.C. is home to wide array

By JAMES DEAN
Spring is in the air and its the House
& Garden Tour season. From Capitol
Hill to Brookland, Georgetown to de-
signer showcases, houses and gardens
are being primped and proudly dis-
played its all about style.
But what style is it? Colonial Revival,
Queen Anne or Italianate? Architecture ex-
presses specic styles and periods of time.
First, lets dispel a myth. There is no
such thing as a Victorian house. Why
you ask? Theyre all over Washington.
The term Victorian represents a pe-
riod of time coinciding roughly with
the reign of Queen Victoria but is not a
dened style. Within that period, tastes
changed and numerous architectural
styles developed. So lets take a look
at some of the most common building
styles in Washington. And dont forget
to impress your house tour mates with
your architectural knowledge.
In 1792, George Washington signed the
party wall proclamation allowing com-
mon walls to straddle property lines thus
shaping Washington neighborhoods as
row house communities. As you tour these
neighborhoods you see that the Wash-
ington Row townhouse with projecting
bay is our dominant building stock. Many
have no distinctive design and some are
transitional with elements of several styles.
Others are full blown examples of a spe-
cic architectural movement.
The earliest buildings in the District
reect Georgian roots. These feature
symmetrical fenestration, a hipped roof
and often a central entry. The White
House is a classic example of this. Fed-
eral design, with a rened semblance
to Georgian, closely followed as the
Republic grew. A prime example, De-
catur House, faces Lafayette Square.
Its also expressed, though, in simpler
wood frame houses with their gable
roofs and modest cornices.
As the 19th century progressed,
many styles developed quickly. Gothic
Revival, a reaction to the preceding
classical examples, can be seen with
Christ Church on Capitol Hill. Attrib-
uted to Benjamin Latrobe, its stylistic
denition comes primarily from the
prominent bell tower, added in 1849,
rather than the original construction.
Carpenter Gothic, Egyptian and Moor-
ish Revival also came into vogue. Short
lived and not widely constructed, they
werent dominant after the Civil War.
Washingtons major building boom
was post Civil War roughly from 1865
through the early 1900s. As the century
progressed there was an explosion of
competing styles. This is truly the Victori-
an era when the architecture we see daily
was popular. A battle of styles, as we see
with haircuts and skirt lengths, had begun.

Situated on one of the few cul-de-sacs in DC, this
1931 Greek revival style home sits at the center of this
small cul-de-sac. The white washed brick, columns
and huge veranda will take your breath away. This
home has been completely restored staying true to
its 1930s time period with thoughtfully added and
fully functional amenities that seamlessly blend into
the homes original footprint. This three bedroom, two
and a half bath home is picture perfect. The bright
sunroom addition on the main level enjoys three sides
of windows to include a door that leads to one of the
homes gardens. A loft has been created that could
be used as a play room, guest room, ofce or as an
addition to the bedroom in which designer building
block stairs have been creatively added. The kitchen
is a Tuscan chefs kitchen with hand cut travertine
stone oors, handmade Italian tiles, top of the line
appliances that include a Thermodor stove, Bosch
refrigerator and dishwasher. Right off the kitchen
is a half bath and a New England style mudroom
with extra storage and a full size Bosch Washer and
Dryer. With cleverly designed built in storage and
bookcases at every turn this Fully updated home is
move in ready. There is plenty of parking in addition to
a large attached garage with extra storage.
