What is CorelDRAW ?
CorelDRAW is a vector graphics editor developed and marketed by Corel Corporation of Ottawa, Canada. It is also the name of Corel's Graphics Suite, which bundles CorelDraw with a bitmap image editor, Corel PhotoPaint, and other graphicsrelated programs. The latest version is designated X6 (equivalent to version 16), and was released in March 2012. Vector artwork is great stuff because if scales without damage, and it is relatively small in size. A typical illustration is only a few hundred kilobytes in size (this compared to photo images that are megabytes in size). If you print a vector illustration at a small size, it will reproduce correctly and nicely. Scale it to a very large size, and it still looks perfect. Contrast that to a photograph, and youll see a great difference. The ampersand at left is a vector illustration (all high-quality fonts are in fact vector illustrations). Enlarging it causes it to get bigger, and the quality remains excellent. Conventional photographic enlargement would have resulted in a fuzzy and often unacceptable image when enlarged. I have marked the enlarged section with the red rectangle. Vector illustrations can survive enlargement without damage because the mathematical coordinates. CorelDraw includes the following features: SUPPORTED PLATFORMS CorelDRAW was originally developed for Microsoft Windows 3 and currently runs on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. The current version, X6, was released on 20th march 2012.Versions for Mac OS and Mac OS X were at one time available, but due to poor sales these were discontinued. The last port for Linux was version 9 (released in 2000, it didn't run natively; instead, it used a modified version of Wine to run) and the last version for OS X was version 11 (released in 2001). Also, up until version 5, CorelDRAW was developed for Windows 3.1x, CTOSand OS/2. CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES Several innovations to vector-based illustration originated with CorelDRAW: a nodeedit tool that operates differently on different objects, fit text-to-path, stroke-before-fill, quick fill/stroke color selection palettes, perspective projections, mesh fills and complex gradient fills. CorelDRAW differentiates itself from its competitors in a number of ways: The first is its positioning as a graphics suite, rather than just a vector graphics program. A full range of editing tools allow the user to adjust contrast, color balance, change the format from RGB to CMYK, add special effects such as vignettes and

special borders to bitmaps. Bitmaps can also be edited more extensively using Corel PhotoPaint, opening the bitmap directly from CorelDRAW and returning to the program after saving. It also allows a laser to cut out any drawings. CorelDRAW is capable of handling multiple pages along with multiple master layers. Multipage documents are easy to create and edit and the Corel print engine allows for booklet and other imposition so even simple printers can be used for producing finished documents. One of the useful features for single and multi-page documents is the ability to create linked text boxes across documents that can be resized and moved while the text itself resets and flows through the boxes. Useful for creating and editing multi-article newsletters etc. Smaller items, like business cards, invitations etc., can be designed to their final page size and imposed to the printer's sheet size for cost-effective printing. An additional print-merge feature (using a spreadsheet or text merge file) allows full personalization for many things like numbered raffle tickets, individual invitations, membership cards and more. CorelDRAW's competitors include Adobe Illustrator and Xara Photo & Graphic Designer. Although all of these are vector-based illustration programs, the user experience differs greatly between them. While these programs will read their native file types and vice versa, the translation is rarely perfect. CorelDRAW can open Adobe PDF files: Adobe PageMaker, Microsoft Publisher and Word, and other programs can print documents to PDF using the Adobe PDF Writer printer driver, which CorelDRAW can then open and edit every aspect of the original layout and design. CorelDRAW can also open PowerPoint Presentations and other Microsoft Office formats with little or no problem CDR FILE FORMAT CDR file format is a proprietary file format developed by Corel Corporation and primarily used for vector graphic drawings. There is no publicly available CDR file format specification. Other CorelDRAW file formats include CorelDRAW Compressed (CDX), CorelDRAW Template (CDT) and Corel Presentation Exchange (CMX). In December 2006 the sK1 open source project team started to reverse-engineer the CDR format. The results and the first working snapshot of the CDR importer were presented at the Libre Graphics Meeting 2007 conference taking place in May 2007 in Montreal (Canada). Later on the team parsed the structure of other Corel formats with the help of the open source CDR Explorer.[34] As of 2008, the sK1 project claims to have the best import support for CorelDRAW file formats among open source software programs. The sK1 project developed also the UniConvertor, a command line open source tool which supports conversion from CorelDRAW ver.7-X3,X4 formats (CDR/CDT/CCX/CDRX/CMX) to other formats. UniConvertor is also used

in Inkscape and Scribus open source projects as an external tool for CorelDraw files importing. In 2007, Microsoft blocked CDR file format in Microsoft Office 2003 with the release of Service Pack 3 for Office 2003. Microsoft later apologized for inaccurately blaming the CDR file format and other formats for security problems in Microsoft Office and released some tools for solving this problem.

History
In 1987, Corel hired software engineers Michel Bouillon and Pat Beirne to develop a vector-based illustration program to bundle with their desktop publishing systems. That program, CorelDRAW, was initially released in 1989. CorelDRAW 1.x and 2.x runs under Windows 2.x and 3.0. CorelDRAW 3.0 came into its own with Microsoft's release of Windows 3.1. The inclusion of TrueType in Windows 3.1 transformed CorelDRAW into a serious illustration program capable of using system-installed outline fonts without requiring third-party software such as Adobe Type Manager; paired with a photo editing program (PhotoPaint), a font manager and several other pieces of software, it was also part of the first all-in-one graphics suite. The first book devoted to CorelDRAW was Mastering CorelDRAW by Chris Dickman, published by Peachpit Press in 1990, with a contribution by Rick Altman. Dickman also founded and published the independent Mastering CorelDRAW Journal publication, and created and ran the first site dedicated to CorelDRAW, CorelNET.com, from 1995 to 1997. More than 20 years later, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6 continues the design momentum, unleashing its most powerful and robust version to date. It showcases an array of new features, design tools and templates to bring your designs to the forefront. Introducing a powerful new typography engine, versatile color harmony & style tools, improved performance with 64-bit and multi-core support, and a complete design-it-yourself website tool all rich features that will enhance any design project. This version still includes a wide range of file compatibility support for over 100 popular file formats and is optimized for the latest Windows operating systems, continuing its global tradition as the leading choice for professional graphic design software.

January 1989 CorelDRAW 1.0 revolutionized the graphic design industry, becoming the first graphics software for windows. February 1990 CorelDRAW 1.11 added AutoCAD DXF import/export support for working with 2D and 3D designs. September 1991 CorelDRAW 2 introduced Print Merge, for merging text files with graphic files and printing the result. The version also introduced Envelop, Blend, Extrusion and Perspective tool for distorting and blending objects and shapes.

October 1992 CorelDRAW 3 added an Editable Preview Mode, providing the ability to work with objects displayed in full detail and in color. CorelDRAW 3 was also the first suite of graphics applications for windows. It introduced Corel PHOTO-PAINT, adding the ability to create, edit or modify raster images. May 1993 CorelDRAW 4 introduced a multi-page capability, allowing documents to be created with as many as 999 pages. This version also introduced the Floating Toolbox, which could be moved out of the way to open up more workspace. July 1994 CorelDRAW 5 brought Postscript and TrueType font support to the program. A powerful color management system was also added, allowing users to customcalibrate a monitor, printer and scanner to achieve a more accurate on-screen representation of colors August 1995 CorelDRAW 6 was released the same day that Microsoft launched Windows 95. CorelDRAW 6 was the first version with full 32-bit support. It also added a graph paper tool and increase the maximum page size from 35x35 to 150ft. X 150ft. April 1997 CorelDRAW 7 added an interactive property bar that put essential tools at peoples fingertips in one handy bar, streamlining the workflow. This version also added support for users to write scripts and automate functions. New writing tools were added, including the Automatic Spell Checker, Thesaurus and Grammar Checker. April 1998 CorelDRAW 8 introduced Multi File Import, plus interactive Drop Shadow tools and interactive Vector tools for manipulating drop shadows, and Zipper and Twister tools for distorting lines and nodes December 1999 CorelDRAW graphics suite 9 added Multiple Color Palettes, letting users customize their workspace to display multiple color palettes simultaneously, for more speed and flexibility. A new Palette Editor made it possible to create custom color palettes or edit existing custom palettes. October 2000 CorelDRAW graphics suite 10 introduced a Publish to PDF function. The Page Sorter View let users view thumbnails of all pages in a document, and reorder pages by dragging and dropping them into new positions. Color Management was completely redesigned to combine essential options in one dialog box.

August 2002 CorelDRAW graphics suite 11 introduced Symbols, letting users create objects and store them in a reusable library, to be referenced many times in a drawing. January 2004 CorelDRAW graphics suite 12 introduced Enhanced Text Alignment tools and Dynamic Guides for precisely positioning, aligning and drawing objects relative to other objects. Unicode text support made it effortless to exchange files regardless of the language or operating system in which the file was created. February 2006 CorelDRAW graphics suite X3 introduced a new tracing engine, Corel PowerTRACE, to convert bitmaps into vector graphics, a new Cut-Out lab in Corel PHOTO-PAINT, and a new Image Adjustment Lab to quickly improve digital photos. This version also added vector object cropping, previously only possible with bitmaps. January 2008 CorelDRAW graphics suite X4 introduced Live Text Formatting for previewing text attributes before applying them to a document. Other new and enhanced features include Interactive Tables, additional file format support (including PDF 1.7 and Microsoft Publisher 2007), camera raw support for over 300 cameras and Independent Page Layers. Online Services for collaboration (CorelDRAW ConceptShare) and font identification were also introduced. In-keeping with market demand, this version was certified for Windows Vista.

GEARING UP FOR THE NEW GENERATION

14

The development period for the CorelDRAW 9 was longer than that allowed for each of the last five versions. And although the development was given an extra six months or so, users who have witnessed the evolution of CorelDRAW wont immediately notice any big changes right off the bat when launching their first session in CorelDRAW 9. Its hard to put a finger on one particular area where CorelDRAW has been improved the most, but certainly the enhancement to the Web/Internet features, the printing/output functions, and onscreen interactivity have been extensive. Although some of these arent as glamorous or visible as changes to some of the effects tool, with regard to productivity, they mean more to the everyday user than, say, a faster way to draw flow charts. DRAW 9S REVAMPED INTERFACE Although you wont readily notice it when you first open CorelDRAW 9, the interface has been modified extensively. You wont find all kinds of interface innovations-most of the changes are built on previously implemented paradigms, but some commands and functions have been switched to new menus; tool options have been moved from one type of dialog box to another (usually from rollups or traditional dialog boxes to the new dockers), and the Property Bar, which was first introduced in CorelDRAW 7, is relied on more than ever. NO MORE ROLLUPS Rollups are history. What was halfway integrated into version 8 is now complete in CorelDRAW 9, at least in the sense that any options once found in rollup dialog boxes are now either put in new docker menus or elsewhere, possibly built into the Option dialog box or Property Bar. Dockers provide access to tool and command options in the same way rollups did, enabling you to work in the drawing while the dialog box remains open, but the advantage to dockers is that they can be docked in toolbar fashion to the edge of your drawing window. Kept on tabs running down the side of the screen, dockers provide quick access to a lot of drawing power without taking up much screen space. While rollups could be minimized when not in use, they tended to get scattered about the drawing window. Dockers are easier to organize and are still more flexible than even the rollups were. When a docker is maximized, it pushes the drawing window over and doesnt cover the pages. If a second docker is opened, it covers the first until it is minimized. When a docker is minimized, it shrinks to a tab at the edge of the window.

NEW WORKSPACE POWERS

15

Corel has made creating and saving custom Workspaces easy in CorelDRAW 9. A Workspace is basically an interface setup- the way toolbars are displayed, menu items are arranged, and which dockers are open. Tools in the Toolbox, the selected color palette, Status Bar options, the grid setup, and the orientation of the rulers are all things that can be customized and saved as a personal Workspace. CorelDRAW 9 comes with several preset Workspace as well.

OBJECT CREATION AND EDITING TOOLS Although the numbers of buttons that have been added to the Toolbox are few, the enhancements made to existing tools are great. Corel has added interactivity to a few more functions, provide new Property Bar for others, and has added a couple of completely new tools, most notably the Artistic Media tool.

NEW ARTISTIC MEDIA TOOL AND DOCKER The new Artistic Media tool is actually five tools in one and provides preset line strokes, brush strokes for painterly effects, an object sprayer (similar to that in PHOTO-PAINT), a calligraphy pen, and a pressure-sensitive pen. One difference between the Artistic tool in CorelDRAW and similar tools in paint packages, however, is that the resulting effects are vector objects, which can be edited using some of the vector tools in DRAW. Artistic Media effects can be applied to the outlines of existing objects, or each tool can be clicked and dragged on the page to draw a curve object to which the selected effect is applied. In addition, the Artistic Media docker (found in the Windows, Dockers menu) can be used for all the effect and allows you to select and apply effects without closing the docker. A last used list helps you quickly find effects you have already used in your document. The docker also provides a way for users to create and load their own custom Artistic Media effects. Users can create their own color painterly effects to use with the Brushes. PERSPECTIVE INTERACTIVE DROP SHADOWING The Interactive Drop Shadow feature in CorelDRAW has been enhanced with added perspective option. After dragging the Drop Shadow tool across an object, you can choose from five perspective direction options- Flat, Bottom, Top, Left, or Right- on a drop-down Property Bar menu. After the drop shadow is generated onscreen, you can then drag the vector handles to reposition the shadow virtually any way you like or type an angle for the shadow into a rotation value box on the Property Bar. Moving the slide on the drop shadow vector changes the opacity of the shadow. New feathering options and a Copy Drop Shadow Properties button are also available on the Property Bar.

16

PAGE LAYOUT AND TEXT FEATURES For the most part, page layout features and text creation tools remain the same in CorelDRAW 9, but there are a few functions that have been added to provide more flexibility when producing your documents.

MULTIPLE PAGE SIZE AND ORIENTATION Until version 9, all pages in a CorelDRAW document were the same size. They could be as large as 150 by 150 feet, but all of them would be that size. In CorelDRAW 9, you can modify the size and orientation of individual pages throughout the document. There remains a default page size for the document-for instance, 8.5 by 11 inches or a size you set in the Page Setup Option dialog box- but then the Property Bar or he new page popup menu can be used to change the size or orientation of the current page (you must navigate to the page you want to alter before changing the size).

MULTILEVEL BREAK APART USING TEXT Using the Break Apart command, Paragraph and Artistic text can be broken down level-by-level, meaning you can select a frame of Paragraph text, perhaps made up of several columns, and use Break Apart (Ctrl+K) to break it into columns, and then paragraphs, to lines, to words, and finally to individual characters. At each level, the items become individual objects and can be manipulated as such. The same goes for Artistic text, starting at the line level (a single block of text is broken into lines, and then words, and then characters).

COLOR MANAGEMENT FEATURES Multiple Onscreen Palettes- CorelDRAW 9 enables you to display more than one color palette at a time. New Palettes- Seven new Pantone color palette have been added to CorelDRAW 9. Embedded ICC Profiles- ICC ( Internal Color Consortium) profiles can be embedded and saved with your CorelDRAW documents improving color management. OUTPUT AND PRINTING FEATURES

17

Several new handy features for checking your document before actually going to print have been added in the Print Options dialog box. Among these are Preview dialog box- a miniature preview dialog box, the Quick Preview, enables you to immediately see the effects of any Print Setup changes without opening the traditional full screen drawing preview. Preflight Warnings- After the print engine has analyzed a document, a message is displayed on the Preflight tab of the Print dialog box indicating any potential problems, if any, with the print job. Multiple Documents- You can select multiple documents to be printed together in a single print run. Enhanced Imposition Layout- The new Imposition Layout tools combine the Signature Layout and N-up Formats capabilities from CorelDRAW 8 into a single feature, providing customized group sets of signature, building options, page rotation, fold marks, and gutters. Downsample Images- You can downsample bitmap images in your document to provide faster printing for quick proofs. Rasterize Page- CorelDRAWs Print dialog box provides an option to rasterize a page (converting vector information and text to bitmaps) before printing. This can solve some printing problems that sometimes occur when printing to non-PostScript printers. Depending on the document, it can also decrease print times. Publishing to PDF- Many enhancements have been integrated into CorelDRAW 9 for exporting documents to PDF (Portable Document Format).

CorelDRAW 9 interface
THE APPLICATION WINDOW CorelDRAW 9s application window adheres to Windows 95/98 conventions, and if you are at least familiar with the operating system and a few supported applications thereof, the depth and breadth of CorelDRAWs interface wont be as daunting as it could be. Part of the brilliance of CorelDRAW 9 is how relatively simple and tidy the main application window is kept; the number of tools and menus is held to a minimum, hardly any more than youd find with your typical word processor.

18

But dig a little and you find that what you see when you first open CorelDRAW is only the tip of the iceberg. The number of functions, tools, and commands located just below the surface of the menus and toolbars is staggering. After all, CorelDRAW is a top-notch professional design program offering a multitude of options. ACCESSING COMMAND MENUS Even with its streamlined interface, CorelDRAW provides several different ways to access most commands. It might seen redundant in some cases, but by offering various ways to access the same command, dialog box, or menu, CorelDRAW lets each user work in a way that is comfortable for him or her. Some users can move the mouse for virtually all functions, whereas some like to touch the mouse as little as possible and move around the interface with the keyboard. Virtually all commands in CorelDRAW are accessible from the Main menu bar, the band of command categories across the top of the screen. Each can be opened by pressing the Alt key along with the underscored letter of the menu. No surprise here, but within these menus are menu flyouts that pop open menu subcategories. A couple of the flyouts even have flyouts of their own, and every command of every menu or flyout can be accessed by using the mouse or Alt keyboard shortcuts. Some menu items immediately perform a function such as those in the Edit and Arrange menus (Copy, Paste, Group, Ungroup, and so on), but many others open dialog boxes or dockers, letting you fine- tune or select an action before it takes place. Theres a lot in these menus, and much has changed since last version of CorelDRAW. ANATOMY OF DRAW 9S DOCUMENT WINDOW Moving in a couple steps from the Main menu, you come to the document window, with it rulers, scrollbars, and pages. The document window is where the real action takes place, where you can see the results of all those menu commands you access. NAVIGATING DOCUMENT WINDOWS The multiple document interface, or MDI, was implemented in CorelDRAW several versions back (Version 6, the first for Windows 95, to be precise). MDI lets you open more than one file at a time as well as have multiple document windows open fir the same file. After you have file or several file open, there are tools, menu commands, and onscreen elements for navigating the document window and between documents. SETTING PAGE VIEWS

19

First, you can view a document page almost anyway you like. By default, a file is opened to a full-page view in Enhanced display mode. The view mode, which determines the level of detail displayed in the drawing, cab be changed in the View menu; and the Zoom Level can be set by using the drop-down list on the Standard toolbar, among other ways. The display of other page and design elements, such as the page border, guidelines, printable area, and so on, can also be set by using the View menu or the Tools, Options dialog box (Ctrl+J). USING SCROLLBARS AND PANNING To move your view of the current page in the current document window, you can use the scrollbars or the Pan tool. The scrollbars work like those in any Windows program: You can click the arrows, click and drag the square location button. The Pan tool, the little hand icon, is located in the Zoom tool flyout in the Toolbox. TAKING ADVANTAGE OF WORKSPACES Generally, you want your drawing area as big as possible while retaining as much functionality from the toolbars and menus as possible, or as needed for certain tasks. By hiding and displaying, resizing, and moving certain toolbars and dockers, you can set up the optimal work area for the project at hand. You can dock your Scrapbook items for a certain job, dock the Text toolbar for quick to fonts and text styles, and hide the Standard toolbar because you use shortcut keys for all those operations, anyway. The Rulers you toggle on when needed. After going to the trouble of setting up a work area such as this, you want to save it, and thats where Workspaces come in.

WHATS A WORKSPACE? A workspace is a preset or customized work area, basically everything you see in the application window, including toolbars, dockers, menus, color palette, and tools. But thats not all. A workspace also comprises all the settings contained under the Workspace menu in the Option dialog box. These include display settings, editing precision, custom shortcut keys, save option, text styles, selected color palette, and more. Options you cannot save in a Workspace are settings for guidelines, rulers, page layout, units of measure, and other items associated with a specific document. All these items come under the Document Options.

20

The entire Workspace can be customized and optimized for certain projects (company monthly newsletter, ad campaign, particular Web site), for certain types of projects (Web, art oriented, text oriented, and so on), or for different users. Workspaces are easy to save and easily removed, but it can take some time to get your work environment just right; so when you do why not save it for another day?

CHOOSING A PRESET WORKSPACE CorelDRAW 9 comes with several preset Workspaces to choose from. When you first launch the program, CorelDRAW uses the Default Workspace mode. To examine the other preset, open Tools, Options (Ctrl+J), and click Workspace in the menu on the left. You see a list of the preset Workspaces, such as Adobe Illustrator and CorelDRAW 8. A bullet indicates the current Workspace.

CREATING YOUR OWN CUSTOM WORKSPACE To create a new Workspace: 1. Open the Options dialog box (Ctrl+J) to the Workspace page. 2. Click New. 3. Enter the Name of new Workspace 4. Then you have a choice of which preset Workspace you want to base your new one on. One of the preset than the Default might be closer to what you have in mind create. Make your choice in the Base new workspace on dropdown list. 5. If desired, type in a description of the new Workspace and check Set as current workspace. (If you do not check this box, any customizing you do is associated with the previous current Workspace.) 6. Click OK and go to town making your settings and interface changes, assured that these changes will be part of the current (new) Workspace.

WORKING WITH CorelDRAW 9 FILES

SAVING NEW AND EXISTING FILES The capability to save a file is by far the most important function an application can offer. If you cant save your work for later, what good is the program to you? Nonetheless, saving you work is all about being organized and orderly.

21

For the most part, saving a file is a basic and straightforward operation, but CorelDRAW 9 does offer more options for saving files than many other programs you might be used to using. Understanding these options helps eliminate problems when you, or other CorelDRAW 9 users, need to open or reuse the files. But most importantly, saving your files carefully helps prevent the potential disaster of losing hours, maybe days, of work.

UNDERSTANDING SAAVE OPTIONS Most often files are saved using the CorelDRAW default options- this is probably true any time the file is to be opened again by you or another user CorelDRAW 9. If the file is to be put to other uses, however, CorelDRAW provides a way to save (or export) the file successfully. The options chosen when saving a file for the first time (including the filename and location) are the options CorelDRAW uses every time you subsequently save that file. Ctrl+S works as a quick save with no pop-up dialog box. When you want to change the save options, you use the Save As command.

SAVING TO PREVIOUS CORELDRAW VERSIONS Most likely, there is not another graphics program out there that has gone through more upgrades in the past few years than CorelDRAW has. For that reason, it is often necessary to save files in a way that users of previous versions can open them. CorelDRAW 9 has lets you save to formats compatible with versions as far back as CorelDRAW 5. In the Save Drawing dialog box, click the drop-down arrow under Version and Choose the version-numbered format to which you need to save your file. Unlike some programs, all versions of CorelDRAW use the same file extension, CDR, for native files.

SAVING TO OTHER APPLICATION FORMATS CorelDRAW has one of the longest lists of supported file formats on the planet, but only some of these formats are accessible when saving a document. The rest can be made available by exporting files to other formats. As you look through the list under the Save as Type drop-down menu, you might notice that all are vector formats and most are Corel related, the exceptions being AI (Adobe Illustrator) and the three metafile formats (WMF, EMF, and CGM). Metafile formats are vector-based formats

22

(meaning objects in the drawing- curves, rectangles, circles- can be edited as such later) and are widely supported by other graphics and business applications. Although, when you want to equip a file with the information that it needs to be opened by another program, it is probably best to export it in the desired application format, the metafile formats provide flexibility they can be opened by virtually any vector graphics program.

OPENING EXISTING FILES By now, youve saved a few files or you have files saved from an earlier version of CorelDRAW that you need to open. Or, an associate has given you some CDR files and you have no idea which version they were saved in. it helps to know all the different ways you can open a file and with CorelDRAW 9 there are many as well as the information that can be gleaned from the before opening it.

OPENING NATIVE CORELDRAW FILES By native, we mean files that have been saved with CorelDRAW 9 in CorelDRAW 9 format (CDR). Anyone using DRAW 9 should be able to open these files- users of earlier versions cannot. The most obvious way to open these files is to select Open under the File menu (Ctrl+O) or click the Open icon on the Standard toolbar. Doubleclicking the filename after locating it in the Open Drawing dialog box opens the selected file. This dialog box is also accessible from the Welcome Screen (choose Open Graphics) when you first launch the program.

DRAG-AND-DROP OPENING CorelDRAW has no shortage of ways to exploit the mouse. CorelDRAW 9 provides at least three ways to open files using drag-and-drop. You cant drag the files from the Open Drawing dialog box onto a blank CorelDRAW document window; you can drag the file from Windows Explorer onto a blank DRAW screen; or you can drag and drop the file from Explorer or your Desktop onto the CorelDRAW 9 program icon, which also launches the program if it is not already open. WORKING WITH TEMPLATES CorelDRAW templates provide a way to reuse styles, page, and even design elements of a drawing in a file. Templates are handy if you produce many similar documents and dont want the hassle of configuring, page size, borders, letterhead, and so on repeatedly for the same kind of documents. In addition to containing page

23

settings, text, or graphics, a template include styles for graphics, Artistic text, and Paragraph text. These styles help control the appearance of specific objects or types of objects such as lines, curves, shapes, and text. You can create your own templates, employ one of the hundreds that are supplied with CorelDRAW, or modify an existing CDR (drawing) or CDT (template) file and save it as a template. Essentially, anything that can be saved in a drawing file can be saved in a template. CorelDRAW comes with a default template (called coreldrw.cdt) that has one style each for graphics and Artistic text and seven for Paragraph text. When you start CorelDRAW, a blank drawing is created based on coreldrw.cdt template.

USING COREL-SUPPLIED TEMPLATES In addition to the default template, CorelDRAW provides a wide variety of preset template that can help you speed up the process of creating drawings. Templates for such things as advertisement, invoices, letterhead, and newsletters can be used as is or modified suit your needs. For example, if you like a template but want to make it more versatile you can add styles that youve created or taken from another template. To start a new file based on one of the templates supplied with CorelDRAW use the Template Wizard: 1. Open the Template Wizard by selecting New from Template in the File menu. Insert the appropriate CD-ROM if prompted for it. 2. Choose between templates from CorelDRAW or PaperDirect and click Next (PaperDirect is supplier of preprinted and specialty papers). Click Next. 3. Choose a category of templates (Brochure, Invitation, Letterhead, and so on). Click Next. 4. Highlight the template filenames to see preview of the documents. Select the desired template and choose whether to Open with contents. 5. After you find the template you want to use, click finish to open a drawing file.

SAVING A TEMPLATE If none of the preset template meets your needs, you can create your own template based on your own styles or styles taken from other templates. You can also create a template from any drawing you create in CorelDRAW. To save a template, you can use the Graphics and Text Styles docker or the Save Drawing dialog box (choose

24

Save As from the File menu). Objects on the drawing page can be saved along with the styles so that if you load the template with contents included, these objects load as well. Additionally if you alter the page layout from the regular CorelDRAW default template, you can save the page settings, rulers, and grid and guideline setup. When you use the Save Drawing dialog box, CorelDRAW automatically saves objects on the drawing page with the template (CDT file). To save a template using the Graphics and Text Styles docker: 1. Select Graphics and Text Styles (Ctrl+F5) from the Tools menu.. 2. Right click in the docker to pop up the menu. Select Show and choose AutoView or the style type want to view (create). 3. Add text and graphics to the document file and use them to create the style you want (click and drag the graphics or text object into the docker). 4. Return to the pop-up menu and click template, Save As. 5. Enter a filename and choose a folder in which to save the template. 6. Enable the Web Contents check box to include page settings and objects on the active page or disable the check box to save only the styles. 7. Click the Save button.

EXPLORING THE SCRAPBOOK One of the CorelDRAWs most valuable but probably most underuse tools for merging files and design elements is the Scrapbook. The Scrapbook is a special set of dockers found under the Tools menu from which you can browse to any file on your computer. The Scrapbook can also be accessed in the Window, and Dockers menu. The power of the Scrapbook, however, lies with the CorelDRAW presets and the books link to CorelDRAWs clip art, stock photos, and 3D. Items in the Scrapbook are organized into category folders, some of which are installed on your hard drive whereas others are found on CorelDRAWs CDs (clip art, photos, and so on). You can also create and organize your won scrapbook items. In general, to use an item in any of the Scrapbooks, open a Scrapbook category, locate the desired file (for example, piece of clip art, pattern, or photo in any format that CorelDRAW supports), and drag it onto your page. Items in the Favorite Fills and Outlines Scrapbook work a little differently. A fill or outline can be dragged and dropped onto any vector object, which is then filled or outlined with that preset style.

WHATS IN THE CLIPART SCRAPBOOK?

25

CorelDRAW provides quick Scrapbook views of certain folders and artwork collection that come supplied on the program CD-ROMs. Anyone familiar with CorelDRAW knows that it comes with an almost overwhelming amount of clip art. The Scrapbook can be one way to make your search for the right image a little easier. To add a clipart image to your current drawing via Scrapbook: 1. Select Scrapbook, clipart from the Tools menu. 2. When prompted for it, insert the CD-ROM containing all the CorelDRAW 9 vector clip art or click cancel if you want to peruse some other disk. 3. Navigate to the desired subfolder (clip-art folder names are found at the beginning of each category section in the CorelDRAW clip-art book). 4. Locate the filename of the image you want to add. 5. Click and drag the file icon to place the image on your page.

WHATS IN THE PHOTOS SCRAPBOOK? The photos Scrapbook works basically the same as the one for clip art. Insert the Photos CD supplied with CorelDRAW, select Photos from the Scrapbook flyout menu, and navigate to the desired folder. All the photos are stored in compressed (WI) format and can be imported into your drawing by dragging and dropping them onto the current page.

USING THE FAVORITE FILLS AND OUTLINES SCRAPBOOK If youve worked hard on getting a fill or an outline style just right, you might want to save it for quick use in the future; using the Favorite Fills and Outlines Scrapbook is one way to do this. To save a fill or outline style: 1. Select the object that has the fill and outline attributes that you want to save. 2. Select Tools, Scrapbook, Favorite Fills and Outlines to open the docker. 3. Open the folder in which you want to save the attribute. 4. Select and drag the object that contains the fill or outline attributes you want to save into the Scrapbook docker window. 5. In the dialog box that pops up, select the attributes you want to save.

26

6. Rename the scrap item, if desired. To apply on of the Favorite Fills and Outlines supplied with CorelDRAW or one that you have saved in the Scrapbook, follow these steps: 1. Create the object you want to apply the fill or outline attributes to. 2. Open the Favorite Fills and Outlines docker. 3. Locate the Preset fill or outline in the appropriate folder (in one the Fills and Outlines subfolders or in a Scrapbook folder you have created for your own presets). 4. Drag the preset icon from the Scrapbook docker and drop it onto the appropriate object in the current file. If you want to apply the preset to several objects at once, select the objects in the drawing, right-click on the fill or outline icon, and choose Apply Favorite from the pop-up menu

WHATS IN THE 3D MODELS SCRAPBOOK? The 3D Models Scrapbook accesses objects save and rendered in 3D metafile format. Any model in the 3dmf folder can be dragged and dropped onto your document. Although you are actually adding them to a two-dimensional CorelDRAW page, the models still can be rotated on all three axes. After adding a model to your page, double-click it to access CorelDRAWs built-in 3D tools.

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6

Imagine how dull documents would be if text and graphics could never be combined in the same file. Or, if you could imaginatively draw shapes, or carefully create diagrams, but never with the same program. Such was life on the PC before CorelDRAW... CorelDRAW took the computer graphics world by storm in 1989, introducing a fullcolor vector illustration and layout programthe first of its kind. Two years later, Corel revolutionized the industry again, introducing the first all-in-one graphics suite with version 3, which combined vector illustration, page layout, photo editing and much more in a single package. Over time, additional components were developed or acquired and bundled with CorelDRAW. The list of bundled packages usually changes somewhat from one release to the next, though there are several mainstays that have remained in the package for many releases now, including PowerTRACE (a bitmap to vector graphic converter), PHOTO-PAINT (a bitmap graphic editor), and CAPTURE (a screen capture utility). The current version of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6 (version 16), contains the following packages: CorelDRAW X6, an intuitive vector-illustration and pagelayout application

Interview with the product manager

In light of the twentieth anniversary of CorelDRAW, John Falsetto, the product manager for CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, recently sat down with Tony Severenuk, a user experience designer, to reflect on the suites history. Tony is well-known within the CorelDRAW user community and has been with Corel for the past fifteen years.

Can you elaborate on what your current role entails? Well, I visit with customers to see how theyre using the software. Those visits help us figure out what users find easy or difficult, and what they may have yet to discover. Its a mutual learning experience. I also attend trade shows and interact with the user community through newsgroups, beta groups, and advisory councils. All the information gleaned from those interactions is then used internally at Corel, by working with Product Management, Engineering, Quality Assurance, and Sales to help shape future versions of the software. What can you tell us about the first version of CorelDRAW, which was released way back in January, 1989? CorelDRAW was actually inspired by user requirements from a product called Corel Headline, which was developed specifically for Ventura Publisher. It helped people create type effects for desktop publishing layouts. So for example, a community newsletter or a newspaper that wanted something dressier than a straight Helvetica headline could use Corel Headline to add type effects with a bit more flair or style. So that's where it started. Over the years, the number of disks in the suite has increased. Do you remember which version had the most? Yes, it was version 6, which included 68 3.5 high-density diskettes. It cost $250 more than the standard suite and was only available by special order through customer service. Today, its all on a single dual- layer DVD. When did the product become a suite? Version 3. Thats when Corel PHOTO-PAINT was first included, along with Corel

82 BY : NITISH POONIA

Chart and Corel Show. With millions of customers around the world, you must have come across some unique uses of the software. Off the top of your head, whats the most interesting? Well, most people regard the suite specifically as a layout and illustration package for advertising. But the one that struck me was learning that people in a memorial service business are designing tombstones with the software. So, theyre designing it in CorelDRAW? Yes. They have a bunch of specialized macros to automate the workflow. And to see such a permanent, personal thing being created is quite special and eye-opening in terms of use of the product. With the way that the software and publishing industries have evolved, how would you say that use of the product has changed over the years? Well, the output has certainly simplified for many of our users. Sign cutters or sign makers, for example, no longer have to go through and weed and strip vinyl to apply it to their signs. Now, they have digital printers that basically print directly on the vinyl itself, so that automates much of their back end workflow. They used to have to cut out little pieces of vinyl to assemble their signs. Now, they can print it out in full color where previously they were limited to a couple of stock colors for each piece of vinyl. And in a similar way, many print shops now have short run presses, which are basically like large, 4-color photocopiers but they can accommodate thousands of copies. So now, rather than having to spend time setting up the press and the ink, and then running off the press proof to ensure the copy is right, they can just go through these blistering fast machines. It saves an enormous amount of time and effort. With such a worldwide user base, do you notice themes when youre visiting with customers? common

With X4, the suite is available in 18 languages and most people like the fact that everything within the product tends to stay live and dynamic. Its easy to work with and alter and add effects to something. They dont have to recreate from scratch. And, regardless of the industry its used in, most people are doing layout work with the product. Whether thats an engraving service, or a sign maker, or promotional box and packaging material. Do users tend to differ from region to region, in terms of what theyre producing with the software or the industry in which

83 BY : NITISH POONIA

its used? Yes. It actually does change quite a bit just between how its used in North America, Europe, Eastern Europe, and Asia Pacific. In North America, you see a lot of people who use it for engraving, screen printing, wayfinding, and signage. Its used that way in Europe, too, but it tends to be more for advertising and layout work with the most common layouts being less than 12 pages. So, people making magazine ads, or telephone or yellow book ads, or newsletters and such. And then, with Japan, instead of industrial use, its used more by people making personal things, like greeting cards and other trinkets. CorelDRAW Graphics Suite has a history of being an industry trailblazer. Can you think of any features developed over the years that have been especially revolutionary? The one that immediately comes to mind is the concept of live effects, which weve had since CorelDRAW version 1. This lets users immediately see the changes of any effects they apply and eliminated having to remember settings when experimenting with different effects. It just updates live onscreen. Then in version 1.2, we also added CorelTRACE. This allowed users to take bitmap objects and convert them into vector objects, which could then be edited. A very useful tool for working on logos or signs. And in version 5, for Corel PHOTO-PAINT, we introduced the ability to have multiple objects on photos. So users didnt have to keep flattening everything they added to a photo. They could have those live elements that were stacked on top, which made editing much easier. Those are known as layers today, right? Yes. And in later versions like 6, 7, and 8 we concentrated on those live, interactive tools, which essentially gave users immediate visual feedback when editing their artwork. So, for example, we have the Interactive Fill, Interactive Blend, Interactive Transparency, and Interactive Drop Shadow tools. So users can change the appearance of an object with effects that re-render all by themselves. Users dont have to open a dialog box and try to remember which settings theyve used. After polishing off those features, we started working on making the software more of a global player. As an example, we wanted it to work seamlessly in Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Russian, Greek, Turkish, Swedish. So for versions 9 through 12 or so, we worked on supporting all those different character sets.

84 BY : NITISH POONIA

So now the result of all that work is a product thats successful around the world. Yes. We sell the suite in 18 different languages natively. Plus, the English product is sold in many other countries as well. Its everywhere truly a global product. Any other particular features developments come to mind? or

Well, in version 10, we added the Mesh fill tool. Thats an exciting one. It helps users create shading, but differently from how gradients, fountain fills, or blends would do it. It gives a more natural appearance and is very popular in the illustration space. Shading is such an important aspect of a design, especially for illustrations of people or landscapes. For version 12, we worked extensively on the precision of drawing. So we had things like snapping and the dynamic guides, which help people achieve more symmetry and alignment in their designs. In X3, we overhauled CorelTRACE and it became Corel PowerTRACE. We concentrated on how smooth the trace results were and reducing the number of colors in the trace result. Users can choose color spaces, for example, if they want spot colors instead of RGB. And this is a real time-saver because spot colors are important for vinyl work or for screen printing. With X4, I really enjoy the fact that the suite and all of its content is shipped on a single DVD. People can install the DVD on their hard drive and easily search for content, templates, and fonts. Those used to be on separate CDs. And to support the advent of digital cameras and singlelens reflex cameras, weve added the ability to open RAW files natively. Another feature that weve had for years is live text. Users can see their changes onscreen as they work through the effects dockers. They can immediately see exactly how their text is going to flow and interact with their design. Do you have any favorite time-savers or tips for people? Something they might not have discovered within the suite? Off the top of my head, theres two for CorelDRAW and two for Corel PHOTO-PAINT. With CorelDRAW, people should check out the Virtual Segment Delete and the Smart Fill tool. With Corel PHOTO-PAINT, they should open the Brush Settings docker, and look for Orbits on the bottom of the docker. And if people are using PowerTRACE and not clicking on the Color tab, they should try that. Its a big time-saver.

85 BY : NITISH POONIA

Are there any little-known facts about CorelDRAW Graphics Suite that people might not realize? The ministry of education in Russia has licensed it for 65,000 schools. So thousands upon thousands of students are using it there. In terms of product development, how would you say the process has changed over the years? Particularly at Corel, but also generally within the industry. Software development, in the beginning, was primarily driven by engineers. Nowadays, theres a middle player that works with Engineering, with Product Management, and with users to interpret what people are looking for. Its not necessarily making line by line items of what they want to see, but focused more on the end goal. Trying to make life easier for users, not just by listening to their issues, but by looking at every angle of their workflow to find out if there are things that they, and we, havent yet considered. So its really evolved from being engineeringdriven to being customer-driven and my role is to interpret the users needs and then design for that.
