Gods approach to creation is evolutionary. Evolution is not something to be feared or denied, but something to be celebrated. Everything around us is evolving, but more important stillwe are evolving! I dont know why so many Christians think evolution is antithetical to a deeply biblical approach to life. If they were less focused on a literal reading of the creation stories and more focused on the truth that undergirds and runs through the biblical narrative, they could rejoice at Gods creative presence in all evolution. Richard Rohr wrote a powerful meditation on this theme earlier this week. Ive reprinted it below so you can all benefit from his wisdom. Have a great week, and if you fall or fail, dont lose heartevolve! Evolution God has let us in on the mystery of his purpose, the hidden plan (Ephesians 1:9). And it sure is hidden, so well hidden that few saw it, the plan God so kindly made from the very beginning in Christ. Christ is the name for Gods plan to materialize his formless Spirit. This is very clear in Colossians 1:15-20, Ephesians 1:3-14, and John 1:1-5, but you cannot see what you were never told to pay attention to. The divine, it seems, wants to manifest itself in visible form. This mystery is going to keep being recapitulated at every level of creation as it evolves, as it emerges, and then the real second coming of Christ is the recognition that its been the Christ all along! Picture the boxed Russian dolls, each one enclosing a smaller one. The first doll and the last doll are the Christ mystery, the Alpha and the Omega of history as it states in Revelation. In the end God will bring together everything under the title of Christ, everything in Heaven and everything on the Earth (Colossians 1:16). This is not an individualistic or anthropocentric notion of salvation. Its happening to the whole of creation, exactly as Paul says in Romans 8:18-39, which is his masterpiece of theology, in my opinion. The very fact that Christians have wasted time and energy fighting the notion of evolution shows that we didnt understand the Cosmic Christ at all. Our Christ and our Jesus have both been too small. Christians should have been the first to appreciate evolution and to recognize what God is doingthat God creates things that continue to create themselves from the inner divine Spirit. Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation (Colossians 1:15), the first little doll in the mind of God. For in him is recapitulated all things in Heaven and on earth (1:20). The Eternal Christ is what Shakespeare would call the play within the play, or the microcosm of the macrocosm. His role is to forever hold together matter and spirit, divine and human, and to say they always have been one, but you just dont know it yet. So God is going to hold them together in front of your faceuntil you do.

Jim Wallis Is Coming To Southern Cal

Jim Wallis, the founder of Sojourners which is celebrating 40 years of faith in action for social justice, will be appearing in Southern California next Monday and Tuesday. He is a best-selling author, public theologian and frequent speaker on faith and public life. He is the author of 10 books, including God's Politics, a New York Times bestseller. His newest book is On God's Side: What Religion Forgets and Politics Hasn't Learned About Serving the Common Good. "In this timely and provocative book, Wallis shows us how to reclaim Jesus' ancient and compelling vision of the common good--a vision that affects and inspires not only our politics but also our personal lives, families, churches, neighborhoods, and world. He thinks it's time to ask what it means to be on God's side, rather than claim God to be on ours." His Southern California appearances will be on these dates and in these places: Monday, April 29 at 7 P.M. he will lecture and sign books at All Saints Church, 132 N. Euclid Avenue, Pasadena. Tuesday, April 30 at 4 P.M. he will lecture at the Kresge Chapel on the campus of Claremont School of Theology, 1325 N. College, Claremont. Tuesday, April 30 at 7:30 P.M. he will lecture and sign books at Bel Air Presbyterian Church, 16221 Mulholland Drive, Los Angeles. I heard Wallis speak at a Pastor's Conference in Pasadena in the late 80s. His address was far and away the best one I heard in that twoday event. He was late arriving at the conference because he had been arrested for being part of a demonstration in Washington D.C. about a social justice issue I've long forgotten. It was clear that of all of the speakers at that conference he was the most involved in working for social justice, not just talking about it. I have followed his blogs and his writings for many years. I encourage you, sisters and brothers of First Christian Church, Fullerton, to make time in your schedule next week to hear Jim Wallis. I plan to hear his lecture in Claremont on Tuesday, April 30. I'd be delighted to have some of you join me for what I'm sure will be an inspiring, and most likely, a disturbing, presentation for those of us who are committed to living out the way of Jesus in the world. Ed Linberg

Fullerton Art Walk Special Exhibit

In addition to the normal Art Walk exhibits, there is a special exhibit, the work of over 80 artists celebrating equal marriage. opening May 3 at the Magoski Art Colony on West Santa Fe Avenue. Art With An Agenda Love, Sex, Unity, Respect, created by Stephan Baxter advocates for equal marriage rights for all people, the LGBT community as well as straight. The fact that so many same sex couples want to be married after years of commitment together, but cannot, is Californias shame. The love I have for my wife is no more valid or more anything than that of any other couple, says Stephan. There will be food, poetry, and live music on this opening night. The exhibit runs from May 3 25

Becoming A Global Mission Church

A few weeks ago, we provided you with information about the process we've begun in the Outreach Ministry that we hope will lead to our becoming a Global Mission Church sometime during 2013. One component of being a Global Mission Church is to be a congregation that prays for the ministries of the Christian Church around the world, as well as being concerned about issues that are impacting international relationships and our desire that justice and peace increase in the world. With this latter concern on our minds, we pass along to you a request for prayer that came on April 17 from Jonghook Hong, President of the Korean Disciples Convocation, and Jinsuk Chun, Executive Pastor, North American Pacific/Asian Disciples. The request is for prayers for Korea. Here is a part of their message. "Recently we have been hearing some disturbing threats emanating from North Korea . . . These threats, we are aware, were provoked (at least in part) by the massive military exercises now taking place in South Korea, conducted jointly by American and South Korean troops. We long for the day when neither the threats nor the exercises would ever be associated with the Korean peninsula. Arrival of such a day may very well begin with our envisioning it and praying for it. . . . Let us envision and pray that in the Korean peninsula, peace and wholeness will prevail." Hong and Chun asked us to pray: . . . that North and South Korean governments make the welfare of their citizens their foremost concern; . . . that North Korean leaders stop making threats with their nuclear weapons; . . . that the people of South Korea show more patience and compassion toward their brothers and sisters to the north; and,

. . . that the governments of the United States, China, Japan and Russia come to regard the Korean peninsula not primarily as a place of strategic interest, but as a place were they would like to serve as peacemakers. Their final word is this: "May God bless us with God's peace in our prayers!" The full text of this request for prayers for Korea is posted on the bulletin board between our women's and men's restrooms. Outreach Ministry Team
