NEW FACULTY MEMBERS James Temprano, MD, MHA, joined the Division of Immunobiology, Section of Allergy and Immunology, as an Assistant Professor in December 2009. He earned his MD and Masters in Health Administration at the University of Kentucky, completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Kentucky, and completed a fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at Saint Louis University in 2005. Katherine Temprano, MD, joined the Division of Rheumatology as an Assistant Professor in January 2010. She received her MD from the University of Kentucky in 1999, completed her residency in Internal Medicine and served as Chief Resident at the University of Kentucky, and completed her fellowship in Rheumatology at Saint Louis University in 2005. After completion of their fellowships, both Drs. Temprano joined the faculty of the University Kentucky. They are happy to have returned to St. Louis with their sons, ages 2 and 6. American Heart Associations Heart Walk This year, the American Heart Associations Heart Walk will be held on Saturday, May 15th at Busch Stadium. The event starts at 8:30am and ends at noon. However, participants do not need to be present entire time. Specific times on the start of the actual walk will be posted later. In past years, the Saint Louis University Division of Cardiology has participated in this event, raising over $7,000.00. This year, Rob Roth RN, is expanding the divisional effort to include the Saint Louis University Department of Internal Medicine. Participation in this years event is two-fold. While we are looking for team captains and walkers to help assist the Heart Association with the fund raising aspect, we are also providing an opportunity for faculty and staff of the Department of Internal Medicine to participate in Start an American Heart Association program that promotes a healthy lifestyle through exercise and diet.

Faculty and staff of the Department of Internal Medicine can register as a participant in Start program by going to www.startwalkingnow.org and registering under SLU Department of Internal Medicine. Participants can log daily walking activities that can only be seen by the participant, however, the web site will track the Departments cumulative efforts in working toward a healthier lifestyle. It may be fun to see how many miles we can walk as a department! A representative from the American Heart Association will be here on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 1:30pm in the 15th Floor Desloge Tower Cardiology Conference Room to provide more information on the Start program. DIVISION OF GASTROENTEROLOGY AND HEPATOLOGY Banke Agarwal, MD, received the Hind Rattan Award for his outstanding service, achievements and contributions at 29th International Congress of Non-Resident Indians on January 25, 2010 in New Delhi, India. We would like to congratulate him on receiving this prestigious award. Brent A. Neuschwander-Tetri, MD, outlined a new way of thinking about the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in a recently published paper: Neuschwander-Tetri BA. Dont miss this opportunity to watch our Chairman make the perfect pitch!!! DIVISION OF GENERAL INTERNAL MEDICINE Thomas J. Olsen, MD, professor of internal medicine, has accepted the position of Director, Division of General Internal Medicine, effective February 19, 2010, after serving as Acting Director for several years. Medical Mission to Haiti The earthquake devastation in Haiti has been on the minds of many people, but Dr Rice was given the opportunity to go to Haiti and serve for a week less than a month after the earthquake. Dr Rice was invited to serve with El Shaddai Ministries International (ESMI), a group that has been working for about a decade providing medical care and supporting 3,000 of Haitis estimated one million orphans.

ESMI had a guest house that provided living quarters for Dr Rice and the eight other team members while serving in Haiti. The team included a 4th year medical student, an OB/GYN, a pediatrician and a Family Practice doctor, a councilor, a relief worker and a chaplain. They spent time working in the government hospital caring for conditions commonly seen in developing communities as well as caring for folks still recovering from injuries sustained from the earthquake one month earlier. Dr. Rice was glad to go to Haiti and he realizes he wouldnt have been able to do so without the support of his colleagues in internal medicine and pediatrics. Dr. Rice said, The thing that allows me to be able to go is I work at an institution that not only talks mission, but does mission. It hires people who step up and help out those who can and are willing to go.

PC RECYCLING As part of the Department of Internal Medicines PC Refresh Program, faculty and staff are provided desktop computers for use in the workplace. Every year old computers and monitors are replaced. The goal is to provide appropriate computers that are less than 5 years old. A frequent question asked as we replace computers is, What happens to the old PCs?

Electronics which have several hazardous waste components are not considered appropriate for the normal trash. If donated or sold to employees or others the appropriate disposal has only been deferred and the waste can be traced back to Saint Louis University. Proper disposal is the environmentally-friendly option. The department contracts with EPC which is an approved electronics recycler with the State of Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the US Environmental Protection Agency. EPC maintains a Zero Landfill Policy and a Zero Export of unprocessed equipment to ThirdWorld Countries Policy. EPC does purchase, refurbish and remarket some of our computers if appropriate and certifies that the equipment is no longer the responsibility of Saint Louis University. By responsible recycling of our old computers and electronics the department contributes to efforts to be green and environmentally friendly.
