DIVISION OF PULMONARY, CRITICAL CARE AND SLEEP MEDICINE Transition to the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program The Cystic Fibrosis Center at Saint University includes a Pediatric Center at Cardinal Glennon Hospital, and an Adult CF Program at Saint Louis University Hospital. The process of transferring care from the pediatric to the adult program is called Transition to the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program. The CF center implemented a transition program in 2008 to facilitate the smooth transition of patients who are 18 years or older, and prepare the patients and parents for the transfer of care. Currently, the second Monday morning of each month pediatric patients meet the Saint Louis University Adult Cystic Fibrosis Care Team during their routine outpatient visit to the Cystic Fibrosis Clinic at Cardinal Glennon Hospital. The transition program allows the patient and their parents to meet the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Team while still having a regular pediatric check up. This program is geared to teens and young adults aged 16 and older The Adult Cystic Fibrosis Team consists of doctors, nurses, dietitians, social workers, etc. Parents are welcome to attend transition visits and meet the adult team. There are several opportunities provided to meet the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Team prior to transfer of care from the pediatric center to the adult

Paul J. Petruska, MD, Director of the Division of Hematology and Oncology, is currently on medical leave. Dr. Petruska recently had surgery and is recovering at home. He is eager to get back to work. We wish him a safe and quick recovery. He is truly missed in the division. Dr. Hans-Joachim Reimers will be acting division director until further notice.

program. Together the pediatric team and the adult team develop a plan of care. When the patient becomes age 18, care is then transferred from the pediatric center to the Adult CF Program at Saint Louis University. There are 15 patients who have transitioned from the pediatric center to Adult CF program since we have implemented the transition program, and 2 brothers will be transferring care in April 2011. So far the transition of these patients is seamless and smooth. The transition program is one of our biggest quality initiative achievements, and it has helped our patients to overcome the separation anxiety and fear of transferring care from Cardinal Glennon Hospital and Pediatric CF Team that has cared for them since their birth or early childhood. Therapeutics Development Network (TDN) Grant We were successful in our application to become a Therapeutic Development Center. This is exciting news, and we are now part of a nationwide clinical trials network funded by Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Therapeutics, Inc. (CFFT) for the purpose of facilitating safe, rapid and coordinated evaluation of new treatments for cystic fibrosis. The TDN includes 77 clinical research centers that are geographically distributed across the United States, seven specialized laboratories and overreading/interpretation centers, and a coordinating center. The CF Center at Saint Louis University and Cardinal Glennon Hospital is awarded $ 70, 384 for the budget period of January 1, 2011 December 31, 2011. Ravi P. Nayak, MD, FCCP, Director, Adult CF Program Gwen Pendleton, RN, BSN, Nursing Coordinator, Adult CF Program
