Chapter 1: Why the Skeletal System is Important

The skeletal system is important for many reasons. First of all, it keeps your body's structure up. If you didnt have *bones you couldn't stand up or walk. Your jaw is important because without it, it would be hard to eat because your teeth are bones. The jaw also helps you talk.

Your bones have another important function. They protect your organs because organs are fragile. The rib bones protect our heart, kidneys and lungs. Your skull is hard and protects your brain. Thats why the skeletal system is important.

Chapter 2 Some Main Bones in the Skeletal System

Your heart, your lungs and your liver are all important. Luckily youve got ribs to keep them safe. Ribs act like a cage of bones around your chest. Its easy to feel the bottom of the cage by running your ngers along the sides of the front of your body, a few inches below your heart .If you breathe in deeply, you can easily feel your ribs right in the front of your body, too. Some skinny kids can even see a few of their ribs right through their skin. You have 12 of ribs on each side of your rib cage attached to your spine. Protecting organs is why ribs are important. Now were going to talk about the spine, vertebrae, cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, coccyx and disks that are all in our spines. There are little bones called vertebrae on the spine shaped like little rings. If we didnt have a spine we couldnt skip, walk or run. Your spine goes almost to your skull and almost to your waist. These are many reasons of why the spine is important.

Chapter 3 Process Of a Broken Bone

It hurts to break a bone. Its different for everyone, but the pain is often a deep ache. Some people might experience sharper pain especially with an open fracture. If the fracture is small, a person may not feel much pain at all. Sometimes people wont even tell if they broke a bone. The most important things to do are: stay calm, make sure the person who is hurt is as comfortable as possible. Get help from an adult that you can trust, if there is no adults around then you can call 911, or the emergency number in your area. The worst thing to do is to move your broken bone. When you are at the hospital the doctors will do an x-ray, to see if its a broken bone and if you will need a cast. The cast will keep your bone in place and in time your bone will start come back together. Bones are able to heal themselves. In a couple weeks, your cast will be taken of ( it might hurt just a bit ) and your bone is back together, but still be very careful with it. The healing of bones is one process that happens in the skeletal system.

Chapter 4 Keeping Your Skeletal System Healthy

You should eat healthy food like milk, cheese, broccoli, sardines, and vitamin D (produced by the sun). Eating like that is very good for you. The milk and cheese have calcium which makes you stronger. If you dont have milk or a dairy regularly, when you get older your bones get weaker and weaker and your bones can break very easily. So start drinking milk and keep your skeletal system healthy. Moving your skeleton is important too, so get some exercise. Go play a sport. Thats how you keep your skeletal system healthy.

Chapter 5 Illness and Injury of the Skeletal System

One type of injury that can happen is breaking a bone. Bones are tough stuff, but even tough stuff can break. When you break a bone all your bone starts to ache and it [d]has a sharp pain to it. You can get it x-rayed, and you can see that your bone is in two split pieces. As mentioned earlier, the good news is that bones can heal over time.

Bone cancer is a very serious illness that can people can get.
