Title of Activity: Blindfold Squares

Number of Teams & Group Size: Minimum 4 people per group Maximum 10 people per group At least 2 teams

Logistics Needed: For Each Person: 1 x Blindfold / Sleep Mask For Facilitator: 2 x length of Twine / Raffia String, each 4 m long

Time Allocated: 20 - 40 minutes

Goal: To form a perfect square while blindfolded

Preparation & Set-Up: Ensure sufficient blindfolds for each participant. Prepare 2 lengths of twine / raffia string. Each should be 4 m long. Distribute the blindfolds to participants.

Directions for Conducting the Activity: 1. Divide participants into 2 groups, and ask each group to form a circle. 2. Instruct participants to wear their blindfolds. Once everyone has done so, place the 4 m twine in the middle of the circle for each group. 3. Inform participants that you have placed the twine on the floor. Tell them that they are to pick up the twine, and use it to form a perfect square. 4. Once they feel they have formed the perfect square, they must then place the twine back on the ground in that shape. Begin the activity. 5. Once each group has completed the activity, ask them to remove their blindfolds to see the perfect square that theyve formed. Very often, the square will be out of shape!

Specific Rules: 1. Participants cannot remove the blindfold until they have finished the activity. 2. While blindfolded, participants must attempt to form a perfect square, using the twine / raffia string provided. 3. Once done, participants must place the shape theyve formed onto the floor.

Variations: 1. Once participants are blindfolded, lead them on a short walk to disorientate them. Then ask them to form a circle, before placing the twine in the middle on the floor. 2. For a slightly easier activity, hand the twine to the blindfolded participants instead of placing it on the floor.

Learning Points: Communication Active Listening Teamwork Appointing Roles Leadership Problem Solving

Facilitator Notes: Its best to use a blindfold, rather than asking participants to close their eyes, due to the length of time needed for this activity. Ensure participants do NOT remove their blindfolds during the activity. If participants feel unwell / discomfort while wearing the blindfold, they may remove it and continue to participate, however, they are NOT allowed to speak for the remainder of the activity.
