Title of Unit: Where We Live Title of Lesson: Lesson 4- Weather and Seasons Submitted By: Caitlin Andrews

A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This is the 4th lesson in a unit about where we live. In this lesson, students will learn about characteristics of weather and how they are different in various regions. Students will use the Houghton Mifflin 1st grade social studies textbook: School and Family, pages 96-99. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 1st grade Skill Level: at grade level Grouping: whole group instruction, partner work for assignment, and independent journal entry C. Materials: Houghton Mifflin 1st grade social studies textbook: School and Family, pages 96-99 Social studies journals Pencils Weather worksheet D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o G8.1.1- Tell how the physical environment affects activity at school, i.e., inside/outside recess

Student-Friendly Standards I will be able to describe characteristics of weather and how they affect us at school

E. Procedure: 1. Introduce weather lesson to students by table talking about what the weather is like today o What does it feel like? Warm? Cold? What kinds of things can we do outside today?

2. Ask students to share their observations 3. Introduce vocabulary words to students who will write words and definitions in the vocabulary section of their social studies journals (weather, season- definitions are on page T96) 4. With the definition of seasons, have students write the 4 seasons and list any characteristics they can think of associated with each 5. Have a class discussion about characteristics. Write all students characteristics on board for the class to see.

6. Pass out the weather graph worksheet to students who will work in pairs to complete. o Have a discussion about how weather can affect what students do daily

7. CLOSURE: Students will write in their social studies journals: o o o What are some characteristics of weather? Describe how different seasons can mean there are different things to do Illustrate our favorite season and explain why

F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Informal assessment through discussions, worksheet and journals Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will know students understand this concept when they can accurately define characteristics of weather and seasons G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the easiest part of this lesson to teach will be the seasons. I think students already know about seasons and have some knowledge about when they occur 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the most challenging part of this lesson to teach is going to be connecting the concept of different locations having different temperatures at the same time of year. For instance, I think it might be difficult for students to understand that FL is going to be warm in February while MN will be below freezing. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? We will look at weather numerous times throughout the year in different lessons and these concepts will continually be revisited. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? I will pull small groups and re-teach the lesson to students who dont understand the concept or need help with a specific area. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?

I would move this lesson to a unit all about weather and not have it in a geography lesson. I am using this lesson right now because it goes in sequence with the textbook but in real-life when teaching this unit I would move this lesson. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part of writing this lesson plan was creating a worksheet that was engaging but not too difficult for students to complete.
