Natsu is a lean, muscular young man of average height with a slightly tan skin tone, black eyes, and

spiky pink-colored hair. Natsu has a scar on the right side of his neck, hidden by his scarf.[2] His red Guild mark is located just below his right shoulder.[3] Natsus main outfit consists of a sleeveless, gold trimmed, black waistcoat, often left open and untucked, exposing his bare chest, white knee-length trousers, a thick black wristband on his left wrist, black open-toed sandals and the scale-patterend scarf he received from his adoptive father, Igneel.[4] He has also been known to wear a rolled up comforter strapped across his back, though he rarely carries it in battle.[5] In the year X791, Natsus attire receives minor changes. He now wears an open-collared, one-sleeved version of his original waistcoat, which is instead tucked in and zipped. The sleeve covers Natsu's left arm, leaving his Fairy Tail mark, as well as his entire right arm, consequently exposed. Natsu continues wearing Igneel's scarf and retains the same lower clothing. He now wears his wristband on his right wrist.[6]

Natsu is carefree and reckless in nature, and, despite his consistent brawls with the other members of Fairy Tail, he is a fiercely loyal and protective friend. Natsu has a straightforward mind, and often tackles issues with a "hands on" approach. Even when disrespected or faced with obvious hostility, Natsu rarely ever reciprocates the feelings, and often forgoes grudge-holding. He did, however, for a short time, hold a grudge against Jellal Fernandes, but eventually forgave him and considered him an ally.[7] He occasionally shows compassion for his enemies, such as when Cobra was betrayed by Brain. Natsu rarely exhibits perversities towards the opposite sex; the only noted instance being seen prior to the Grand Magic Games, when he is seen trying to peek, along with several other of his male Guildmates, on the women as they bathed.[8]

Lucy Heartfilia

Lucy Heartfilia ( Rshii Htofiria?) is a 17-year-old wizard and the initial viewpoint character of Fairy Tail. Mashima named the character after The Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".[vol. 2:afterword] Specializing in celestial magic ( seirei mah), Lucy can summon celestial spirits from a set of magical Gatekeys ( Gto no Kagi).[e] Throughout the series, Lucy occasionally fights with a whip. Virgo later provides her with a version of this weapon capable of using magical energy, called Fleuve d'toiles ( Etowru Furgu, lit. "River of Stars").[f][ch. 115,184] During her early childhood, Lucy establishes herself as a celestial wizard. Her mother Layla Heartfilia ( Reira Htofiria) dies when Lucy is ten years old. Six years later, Lucy sets out to join Fairy Tail due to a strained relationship with her father, Jude Heartfilia ( Jdo Htofiria).[ch. 50]

After befriending Natsu Dragneel and Happy, Lucy joins Fairy Tail and works guild-posted jobs to fund her rented house in Magnolia.[ch. 1-4] To that end, she pursues her dream of writing a novel on her adventures with Fairy Tail.[ch. 4,9,25] As one of the saner members of the guild, Lucy regularly gawks at the odd habits of her guildmates, who frequently show up uninvited inside her house.[ch. 4,47,106] After Phantom Lord's dissolution, Lucy breaks ties with her father, warning him to never interfere with Fairy Tail again.[ch. 50,64,67] Eventually she reconciles with Jude after he loses his fortune, and professes her love for him after learning of his death during her disappearance on Sirius Island.[ch. 129,130,257] In the original Japanese series, she is voiced by Aya Hirano.[8] In the English dub, her voice is supplied by Cherami Leigh.[9] Carl Kimlinger of Anime News Network praised Lucy as being "sympathetic."[10]
