Title: Quilling Mural Grade 7 Description: Students will be required to work in a group of 3 for this project. They will be creating a mural together by quilling, also known as paper rolling, a variety of colors of construction paper. The mural design will be created by the students based on an environmental issue they can research. The size will of the mural will be determined by the students and the foam board available to them. Behavioral Objectives/Essential Questions (3-5): What is Quilling and what is the history of it? What is a mural? Students will collaborate together to create a unifying piece. Students will address a specific environmental issue and portray it in their mural. Pennsylvania State Academic Standards: 9.1.5.A: Know and use the elements and principles of each art form to create works in the arts and humanities. 9.1.5.B: Recognize, know, use and demonstrate a variety of appropriate arts elements and principles to produce, review and revise original works in the arts. 9.1.5.C: Know and use fundamental vocabulary within each of the arts forms. 9.1.5.E: Know and demonstrate how arts can communicate experiences, stories or emotions through the production of works in the arts. Modifications for Individual Differences: Because this is a group project, slow learners will benefit from the collaboration with other students. Gifted/talented students will be able to be the organizer of the group. Materials and/or Equipment: Sketch: Newsprint paper Pencil Quilling Tools: Pencils Toothpicks Dowel rods (varying length) Mural: Foam board Construction paper Scissors Glue Paintbrushes Preparation: Have a PowerPoint presentation prepared on Quilling, images of murals, and different examples of environmental issues. Anticipatory Set: Show the PowerPoint to the students and give a demonstration on different ways to do Quilling and the different shapes you can create.

Student Work Time: Preparation: 1. Research and choose an environmental issue everyone in the group can agree on. 2. Sketch out an idea of how the mural can relate to that issue on a piece of Newsprint. Mural: 1. Draw the image of your sketch onto a piece of foam board. 2. Cut strips of construction paper (about 1/2') and coil them around different materials. (toothpicks, pencils, dowel rods, etc.) Experiment by pinching edges to create leaf, diamond, oval, square, triangle, or half-moon shapes, in addition to the coil circle. 3. Lay the construction paper coils over the sketched composition until it is covered. 4. With a paintbrush, brush glue onto the bottom of the construction paper coils and place back on the foam board until finished Closure: Students will show their mural to the rest of the class. The class will have to guess what the environmental issue the group portrayed and how they succeeded in doing so. Evaluation of the lesson: \ Grading the student: Does the student understand Quilling and the history of it? Does the student understand what a mural is? Were the students able to work together creating a unified piece of art? Did the students creatively address a specific environmental issue for their mural?
