Division 3Concrete

General
Allconcreteproductsshallbedesigned,formed,transported,placed,tested,andfinishedinstrict accordancewiththeAmericanSocietyforTestingandMaterials(ASTM)andtheAmericanConcrete Institutes(ACI)requirements. Concretemix,reinforcement,andstrengthrequirementswillbespecifiedbytheProjectDesign Professionals.Preconstructionmeetingsshallbeheldpriortoworkcommencingtodeterminethe workingparametersconcerningwateraddedatsite,admixtures,deliverymethods,weatherforecast, etc. ManufacturermustbecertifiedaccordingtotheNationalReadyMixedConcreteAssociation's CertificationofReadyMixedConcreteProductionFacilities.Deliveryticketsshallbefurnishedwitheach loadofconcretedeliveredtotheproject.Ticketshallshowclassandstrengthofconcrete,numberof poundsofcementitiousmaterial,sizeofcoarseaggregate,batchingtime,slumporderedandamountof admixture.Indicateamountsofmixwatertobewithheldforlateradditionatprojectsite. BatchdesignmixwillbespecifiedbytheDesignProfessional.Manufacturersbatchingmixtureand reinforcementcertificate(whenapplicable)mustbeapprovedbytheDesignProfessionalandOwners Representativepriortoinstallation. Specifythattheownerreservestherighttoinspectthebatchingplantandthemixingprocesses. AdmixturesmaybeaddedtotheconcretedesignmixasperDesignProfessionalsrecommendationto improvestrength,workability,ortomeetprojectneeds.Donotaddwatertoconcreteafteradding highrangewaterreducingadmixturestomix.Donotaddwatertoconcretebeyondthelimitofwater withheldfromtheplant. Specifytoprotectfreshlyplacedconcretefromprematuredryingandexcessivecoldorhot temperatures.ComplywithACI306.1forcoldweatherprotectionandwithrecommendationsinACI 305Rforhotweatherprotectionduringcuring.Minimumactualconcretetemperatureshallnotbeless than50degreesFfromthetruckattimeofplacement. Ownerwillengageaqualifiedindependenttestingandinspectingagencytosamplematerials,perform tests,andsubmittestreportsduringconcreteplacement. Page1of4

TTUSFP&CDesign&BuildingStandards Division3Concrete TestingofcompositesamplesoffreshconcreteobtainedaccordingtoASTMC172shallbeperformed accordingtothefollowingrequirements: 1.TestingFrequency:Obtainonecompositesampleforeachday'spourofeachconcretemix exceeding5cu.yd.,butlessthan25cu.yd.,plusonesetforeachadditional50cu.yd.or fractionthereof. 2.Slump:ASTMC143;onetestatpointofplacementforeachcompositesample,butnotless thanonetestforeachday'spourofeachconcretemix.Performadditionaltestswhen concreteconsistencyappearstochange. 3.AirContent:ASTMC231,pressuremethod,fornormalweightconcrete;ASTMC173, volumetricmethod,forstructurallightweightconcrete;onetestforeachcompositesample, butnotlessthanonetestforeachday'spourofeachconcretemix. 4.ConcreteTemperature:ASTMC1064;onetesthourlywhenairtemperatureis40degFand belowandwhen80degFandabove,andonetestforeachcompositesample. 5.UnitWeight:ASTMC567,freshunitweightofstructurallightweightconcrete;onetestfor eachcompositesample,butnotlessthanonetestforeachday'spourofeachconcretemix. 6.CompressionTestSpecimens:ASTMC31;cast,moldandcureonesetoffourstandard 6X12testcylinderspecimensorfive4X8testcylinderspecimensforeachcomposite sample. 7.CompressiveStrengthTests:ASTMC39;for6X12cylinderstestonecuredspecimensat7 daysforinformationonlyandtwoat28daystoaveragecompressivestrength.Holdone sampleforretestingifrequired.For4X8cylinderstestonecuredspecimensat7daysfor informationonlyandthreeat28daystoaveragecompressivestrength.Holdonesamplefor retestingifrequired. a. Acompressivestrengthtestshallbetheaverageofthestrengthsofatleasttwo 6X12cylindersoratleastthree4X8cylindersmadefromthesamesampleof concretedandtestedat28days. 8.Testingspecimensaretobetakenafteralladmixturesand/orfieldaddedwaterhasbeen addedandincorporatedintoconcrete.

PolishedConcreteFinishing
TheOwnersRepresentativeandDesignProfessionalwillspecifytheclassificationofAggregateExposure andtheLevelofReflectiveClarityandReflectiveSheen. TheDesignProfessionalwillspecifytheconcretemixdesignfortheportionofconcretethatwillbe polished.Eachmixingredientshouldbefromthesamesource,fromthesamerespectivebatch,and eachdeliveredtotheconcreteproducerinonedelivery. Useauniformlygradedmixofnotlessthan3aggregatesizesfine,intermediate,andlarge. SpecifythattheInstallermustbeexperiencedinperformingworkofthissectionandspecializedin installationofworksimilartothatrequiredforthisproject,withminimumthreeyearsdocumented experience.Referenceswillbemadeavailableuponrequest. A100sqftmockupsamplepanelwillberequiredatthejobsiteatalocationasdirectedunder conditionssimilartothosewhichwillexistduringactualplacement.Mockupswillbeusedtojudge workmanship,concretesubstratepreparation,operationofequipment,materialapplication,color selectionandshine.Whenaccepted,mockupwilldemonstrateminimumstandardofqualityrequired forthiswork.MockuplocationwillbeperOwnersRepresentativeandArchitectsdirective. Floorpolishing,sealingproceduresandtreatmentstobeperDesignProfessionalandmanufacturers recommendations.
