Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Product of two brackets Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should be able to expand and simplify two brackets in the form (x+a)(x+b). Most students should be able to expand and simplify two brackets in the form (xa)(xb). Some students should be able to expand and simplify two brackets in the form (axc)(bxd). Key words: Expand and simplify, Product, Quadratic, Algebraic expression Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students evaluate the area of various shapes to review expanding single brackets and collecting like terms. To extend this task the value of x could be given so that the areas of each shape can be ordered from smallest to lowest. Development When dealing with two brackets it is important to emphasise the hidden operation between them as a multiplication. Remind the students that with algebraic notation the multiplication symbol is not used, hence the brackets are written next to each other without a space. In order to multiply the brackets out explain how every term in one bracket must be multiplied by each term in the other. Hence a systematic and logical method is needed. By using the method to the left the students should eventually see that the constant term is the product of the two non-x values and the coefficient of b is their sum. Students may need quite a bit of practise with this, but once the concept is internalised it is something they should be expected to do mentally. Pose the latter questions on the second slide for the students to do independently on miniwhiteboards so that the teacher can assess progress. When ready, the students should work through the questions on the third slide independently. Feedback the answers as the class progress through the task so that pace is maintained. Plenary The plenary is intended to recap other aspects of algebraic notation, and area as well as providing a challenging application of the skill. Students will need to evaluate the missing lengths then calculate areas to find their sum. It may be wise to encourage the students to work together on this using a single mini-whiteboard so that they can help and support each other. Resources:

Differentiation More able: Students could expand expressions with more than two brackets in order to derive Pascals Triangle. The use of fractions and negatives will enable this concept to address various aspects of maths. Less Able Students may benefit from an alternative layout in order to expand the two brackets as an area. For example,
