A27 A30 PUMPS

INSTRUCTIONS FOR START-UP AND UPKEEP

We wish to thank you for having chosen SIEBEC equipment and invite you to read these instructions carefully so that you may obtain total satisfaction.

1) ON RECEIVING THE EQUIPMENT

You should have received in the package a pump and the present Instruction Notice. Please check the type of pump and that the series number on the name plate of the motor is the same as on the invoice.

2) HYDRAULIC CONNECTION
Choice of piping : - for suction, please choose a reinforced pipe to avoid its being crushed under the negative pressure effect caused by the pump, - for suction and discharge, choose a sufficient diameter so as to avoid exaggerated load loss : Pump model A27 pump A30 pump Pump model A27-A30 PP pump A27-A30 PVDF pump Inlet flexible hose (internal diam.) Outlet flexible hose (internal diam.) 65 mm 50 mm 65 mm 50 mm Flange Outlet : ref 12917 Outlet : ref 12933 Union nut Outlet : ref 12915 Outlet : ref 12932

Inlet : ref 12916 Inlet : ref 12931

Inlet : ref 12914 Inlet : ref 12930

Remove the two protective plugs on the nozzle ends To assemble a rigid piping, unscrew and withdraw the 2 grooved nozzles and assemble nut or flange joint connections Make connections reducing to the minimum the number of elbows and other factors causing load loss For such big pumps, rigid piping is preferable to flexible hose.

Position of the suction and discharge piping If the pump is intended for stirring a bath, it is advisable for better performance to place the suction at the bottom of the tank and the discharge pipe on the surface. The suction and discharge functions should be as far away from each other as possible. Installation of the pump and choice of valves : - It is highly advisable to install the pump under pressure to facilitate priming and to limit the danger of dry running. If the pump is not under pressure, assemble a non-return valve at the end of the suction pipe so as to avoid unpriming at pump shutdown. (please refer to paragraph Strainer herunder). - Choose membrane valves to avoid any air intake. - It is advisable to assemble a valve at discharge to control the flow. This valve will be closed before pump shutdown if this is not under pressure.. - Do not exceed 5 m of suction height. Height should be limited to 1.5 m otherwise priming time will be very long. - Provide a bleed valve at discharge which facilitates evacuating the air when priming. If not, make sure there is no counter-slope in the piping where air locks could form. Strainer To avoid introduction of foreign bodies in the pump casing, all models of A27 and A30 pumps are fitted with a strainer built into the volute case. However, we recommend assembly of a non-return strainer at the end of suction pipe, so as to avoid siphoning at pump shutdown if this is not under pressure. Protective cover Always assemble a protective cover above the pump so as to avoid any accidental projection on the motor. Leave enough space around the pump to guarantee good ventilation and facilitate visual checks on possible leaks, and handling of the valves. 2

3) ELECTRICAL CONNECTION
Check that the electricity supply is correct and that the protections (thermal and over-voltage) are correctly adjusted and suitable. Electrical connection should be carried out following the diagram shown in the terminal box (if necessary, alter the position of the plate straps). Start up the pump and check with a strip of paper placed in the fan that the motor is running correctly in the direction indicated by the arrow moulded in the volute. If not, reverse 2 phases. Warning ! The pump must only operate dry for the shortest possible time (less than 5 minutes).

4) PRIMING AND SWITCHING ON

If the suction piping is particularly long or is a complicated shape, check that the absolute pressure at suction is sufficient (please refer to the NPSH Net Positive Suction Head curves). Flexible piping : If the pump is under pressure : - Plunge the end of the discharge pipe in the tank - Open the discharge valve - Open the suction valve if there is one in place - Check that the liquid arrives in the casing of the pump - Switch on the pump : the liquid should squirt out immediately at full stream from the discharge pipe If the pump is not under pressure : - Plunge the end of the discharge pipe in the tank - Open the discharge valve - Open the suction valve if there is one in place - Fill up the casing of the pump and the suction pipe as well - Switch on the pump : the liquid should squirt out within 5 minutes - If this is not the case, start the operation again. Rigid piping : - The valve assembled on the suction pipe must always be fully open to avoid damaging the pump casing through cavitation [View 22]. - Open the discharge valve. - Switch on the pump motor. Self re-priming : These are self re-priming pumps. This does not however mean that they can run dry without danger of deterioration. When the pump is not under pressure, the self re-priming means that it re-primes without operator intervention, if a momentary intake of air occurs at suction during operation or if the pump is stopped and then started up again. One must be careful to make sure that the pump casing does not empty completely by sudden siphoning at shutdown. Depending on the amount of air at suction, and subject to a suction height of < 1,5 m, the pump should flow normally within < 5 minutes. If this is not the case, priming operations should be started again. Above this height, priming must also be started again. 3

5) DISMANTLING
Necessary tools - 1 split key n 36 - 1 split key n 29 - 1 hexagon socket screw key n 6 - 1 tubular socket wrench n 8 - 1 flat screwdriver - 1 stud 10 for helping in dismantling the hexagon socket screw - 1 stud 55 for installing the stationary ring, - 1 stud 35 for installing and 22 for removing the stationary ring, - 1 dismantling tool ref. 9391 - grease, petroleum jelly - 1 torque wrench - thread locking glue (medium). Dismantling the pump casing : - Dismantle the volute by unscrewing the screws and remove it - Place the pump vertically - Insert a split key n 36 on the movable baffle of the motor - At the same time insert a split key n 29 on the impeller hub - Unscrew the hub - Remove the assembly distance block/impeller by pulling upwards - Chuck the hub hexagon in the vice jaws - Unscrew the internal screw by 2 turns, using the hexagon socket screw key - Using a 10 stud, knock strongly on the head of the hexagon-socket setscrew - Drive out the impeller after having fully unscrewed the hexagon-socket setscrew. - Check condition of the stationary ring and rotating ring Change them without fail if their surface is deteriorated : dent, break, wear, crystallization, etc Good sealing depends on the contact between the rotating ring and the stationary ring. - Push out the stationary ring using the stud 22 - Slip the sleeve (included in the dismantling tool, reference 9391, optional), on the rotating ring and tighten the collar - Hold the hub of the impeller and pull off the rotating ring by turning the sleeve. IMPORTANT REMINDER - One set of mechanical seals is composed of : 1 rotating ring + 1 stationary ring. - The type of seals should be determined according to the liquid to convey Please check with us Miscelleanous stationary rings : REFERENCE 14261 13702 13699 Miscelleanous rotating rings : REFERENCE 13700 13701 13704 13703 13713 GRAPHITE GRAPHITE SILICON CARBIDE SILICON CARBIDE SILICON CARBIDE MATERIALS BUTYL FPM BUTYL FPM FPM STAINLESS STEEL STAINLESS STEEL STAINLESS STEEL STAINLESS STEEL PVC/STAINLESS STEEL MATERIALS SILICON CARBIDE/EPDM SILICON CARBIDE/FPM CERAMIC/FPM

6) REASSEMBLY
Make sure the different journals are clean and the good condition of the seals which will be reassembled. Reassembly of the pump casing : - Put a stud 55 on the working surface and place the distance block on top of it - Position the PTFE washer (ref. 764) in its seat 37 - Wet the outer edge of the stationary ring with soapy water to facilitate its installation - Position the stationary ring by hand, with the ground surface facing up - Tap the ring gently into position using a stud 35. Warning, it is fragile ! - Clean the journal of the stationary ring - Put 1 drop of petroleum jelly onto the ground surface of the stationary ring - Insert the impeller under the distance block instead of the stud, remove the stud 55 - Take the impeller hub and lubricate it with one drop of petroleum jelly - Introduce the rotating ring onto the impeller hub, taking care not to notch it - Push the outer part and not the spring itself. Warning, it is fragile ! - Take care that the milling (A) is opposite the 2 positioning snugs (B) - Push the housing cover into the impeller housing - Introduce the impeller hub into the impeller through the stationary ring and the impeller housing - Put the hexagon-socket setscrew into the impeller hub and screw it using a split key n 29 and a torque wrench adjusted to 3mdaN. WARNING : the length of this screw (ref. 840) must in no case exceed 65 mm under head - Put 2 drops of thread locking glue (medium) on the hub thread - Screw the pump casing on the motor (impeller hub into the movable baffle) - Put the volute gasket back - Put the strainer back onto the diffusion part - Put the diffusion part with the strainer back inside the volute case - Tighten the whole by fully screwing the impeller hub on the movable baffle - Reassemble the volute and screw it using the 8 screws.

7) UPKEEP OPERATIONS
Clean the motor if necessary (taking special care in the cleanliness and dedusting of the fan cover grille). Every 3 months : - Fan dedusting - Rinsing of sealing system - Impeller cleaning Every 6 months : - cleaning of the volute case - check sealing system (rotating ring and stationary ring) and the volute gasket

8) ANOMALIES AND POSSIBLE CAUSES

If you notice seepage at the sealing ring : change the rotating ring and the stationary ring If you notice seepage at the volute : change the volute gasket If your pump makes a noise or whistles : change the rolling bearings of the motor If it is a thudding noise or if the pump does not supply expected performance : check that it turns in the right direction If it is a metallic noise : check that the fan is not rubbing on the rear cover If the liquid conveyed crystallizes : clean the sealing system very often with a spray whilst turning the motor. Before each start-up, turn the motor by hand. Check the sealing system every 3 months If your pump has to convey different liquids : rinse carefully between each liquid change. Check that there is no incompatibility between liquids and the materials making up the pump casing or rinsing liquid with the liquid conveyed.

If there is a problem of priming : Absence of liquid in the pump casing Air inlet in the piping (faulty welding on rigid piping) Volute screws loose Protective plugs left in place Suction height too high Air inlet at the pump outlet for, depending on the discharge circuit there could be counter pressure which stands in the way of priming. Example : the liquid contained in the U hinders priming so a tap for air evacuation. 5

If flow rate is too low or none at all : Suction strainer blocked Layer of rubber unstuck inside a flexible piping Impeller deteriorated or blocked Motor rotation direction reversed Circuit valves partially or completely closed

9) LIMITS OF USE
The SIEBEC mechanically sealed pumps are suitable for most of the current electro-plating baths. However, they are not universal and cannot be used to convey : - Solutions likely to crystallize strongly (rinsing is advised in the case of prolonged pump shutdown), as well as certain specific products. Some of the most important are listed below : - Chromic acid - Chloroform - Hydrofluoric acid 50 % - Aqua regia - Concentrated acid or sulphuric acid - Ether - Oleic acid - Fluorine - Aniline - Hydrocarbons - Benzene - Iodine - Oleum - Benzol - Solvents - Bromine - Chlorine Warning ! Certain products conveyed alone without danger can, when mixed, deteriorate the pump. For example : aqua regia (hydrochloric acid + nitric acid). In case of doubt, please consult us. The temperature and viscosity of liquids have an effect on the features of the pumps. Maximum density of liquid to be conveyed : 1.6 Maximum temperature in continuous use : 80C for models in polypropylene, 110C for models in PVDF (not available for the A15). These temperatures can be raised by 10C for short periods of time. Never run dry ! (no more than 5 minutes for a new pump).
