Introduction (5min)

Body (30-45) (10minutes)

S will know the different kinds of cyclone warnings and where to find them S will be able to indentify the damage caused by cyclones

T introduces the BOM website and takes S through the different warnings and where they can be found

S will understand the different types of cyclone warnings issue by the BOM and where they can find them

News article activity (20 mins)

T to separate students into their learning styles based on previous observation T to provide each group with a couple of video, audio and print versions of news stories relating to cyclone yasi T to explain that S are to identify the impacts on the environment, economy and community and report them

S will be able to identify the damage caused by cyclones Yasi and report back to the class

back in a small presentation to the class.

Cyclones review(5mins )

S will show their understand of the concepts associated with cyclones S will be able to recall information learn about cyclones over the past lesson and half S to show their prior knowledge of fires in Australia T to asks students questions on content they have learn over the past few lessons T to encourage and praise students for their answers

Introduction to Fires (5mins)

T to ask questions to gauge students prior knowledge of fires in Australia For example: can anyone name major fires that have recently occurred in Australia? Where did they occur? What type of environment did they occur in? How did they occur? Deliberately lit or naturally lit? T to ask students what type of land fires usually occur in (bushland, grassland) and write the S ideas on the board T to explain the different types of fires that occur and write them on the board S to copy down the different types of fires

S will learn about some major fires that have occurred in Australia recently and in the past S will be introduced to concepts such as deliberately lit and naturally lit fires

Classroom Discussion (5mins)
