Greg Fletcher Annotated Bibliography Final Draft 4/30/13 Media Effects on Gun Control Gun control is a very current

topic with many issues. There are a lot of different voices that are all trying to voice their opinions on these issues. The media has influenced all of these voices on this argument greatly. For my line of inquiry, I am going to investigate how the media has affected gun control. The popular opinion is that the media is for gun control. I am going to see if the popular opinion about the media's influences on gun control are correct.

Kaplan, Thomas. "Sweeping Limits on Guns Become Law in New York." The New York Times. The New York Times, 16 Jan. 2013. Web. 22 Feb. 2013. Kaplan reports how New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo, signs one of the first gun

control bills in the United States. Kaplan writes that Cuomo states how this bill will not completely get rid of guns in New York, but is more of a common sense regulation. He goes on to say that this bill limits the amount of ammunition allowed in any magazine to only seven rounds. The bill also requires a background check on people who are trying to purchase firearms. This background check does not allow the mentally ill to purchase firearms. Cuomo thinks that this bill is the right move for New York because he thinks it will regulate gun violence. Thomas Kaplan has been a reporter for the New York Times for almost three years. He covers New York government and politics. He has a master's and bachelor's degree in arts from Yale University. He is a credible source on this topic and his information is reliable.

This article is very relevant to my topic because it shows that new gun control bills are actually a good idea because they use common sense. This article shows how the laws are not too overbearing on gun holders, while getting to regulate some things that contribute to gun violence. This means that politicians are trying to be fair to both sides of this argument and are going to do their best to make sure we keep our rights as citizens. This article also shows how the media can really effect a politician's choice on an argument. I can rely on this source because the author is credible and it is very current information.

Pratt, Larry. "How Media Distorts The Gun Control Debate." Gun Owners of America. N.p., 29 Sept. 2008. Web. 02 Mar. 2013. In this article, Larry Pratt writes about how the media is pro-gun control. He states how

the media will only write things that make guns look like the root of all evil. Pratt writes how the media fails to give the gun freedom side the chance to voice their argument. Pratt states how the media failed to recognize an important victory for the pro-gun freedom side by not including important information about an argument between Larry Pratt and the San Jose police chief. The article also states how the media has used false advertising by making firearms seem more dangerous to gain more people on the pro-gun control side. Larry Pratt is the executive director of Gun Owners of America. This is a pro-gun freedom group that was made to fight for the peoples' rights to own guns. Pratt was also a former member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He graduated from American University with a degree in political science. Pratt's article is relevant to my topic in two separate ways. First, Pratt shows how the media is very against gun freedom and he proves his point very well. Secondly, the fact that

Pratt is writing this article as an executive director of the Gun Owners of America group, he is showing me how the media has had an effect on him and his group. From this article, I can tell that the media has had a negative effect on Pratt and his group. This article is relevant to my topic and current so it is perfect for my argument.

Dowler, Kenneth. "Media Influence on Attitudes toward Guns and Gun Control." American Journal of Criminal Justice 26.2 (2002): 235-47. Kenneth Dowler discusses the effect of media on peoples' attitudes towards gun control.

Dowler takes a poll that basically measures the amount of television, radio, etc., that people listen to and then records their views on gun control. His results are that people who watch more television are against gun control. Dowler states how the viewers think that people would just become innocent victims. Dowler also saw how people who listened to extensive amounts of radio actually have different opinions than the television watchers. Radio listeners are in favor of some restrictive gun control laws. Kenneth Dowler received his master's degree in sociology and criminology and his bachelor's degree in criminology from University of Windsor. He received his Ph. D in sociology at Wayne University. He is now a professor at Wilfred Laurier University. This article is very relevant to my topic because it goes against what most people think about the media influences on gun control. The poll supports the side that television watchers do not actually support gun control and therefore would mean that the media actually pushes people against gun control. The poll that Dowler studied was taken in 1995. I thought that this might mean that because it was not very current, it would not be relevant. But then I thought about how there are actually so many more media influences that the data would support the same

conclusion more forcefully.

Turnage, Jeremy. "Rep. Jeff Duncan Lobbying to Bring Gun Manufacturers to SC Wistv.com - Columbia, South Carolina |." Rep. Jeff Duncan Lobbying to Bring Gun Manufacturers to SC - Wistv.com - Columbia, South Carolina |. WIS, 22 Feb. 2013. Web. 17 Mar. 2013. Jeremy Turnage reports about a gun manufacturer in Colorado, Magpul, is threatening to

leave Colorado entirely because of the new gun control laws. The new gun laws in Colorado state how there is a limit on the amount of ammunition that is allowed in a single magazine. Turnage says how Magpul specializes in high-capacity ammo magazines and this law is devastating to their business. He also reports that South Carolinian Congressman, Jeff Duncan, tries to get these companies to move to South Carolina because the Congressman is trying to save small businesses and this is a great place to start. Jeremy Turnage has his Bachelor's degree in print journalism from the University of South Carolina. He graduated with honors in May, 2008. He currently works at WIS News 10 as a new media content producer. He has worked there for two years and six months posting content and news stories to the WIS website and various things for the WIS network. This article has a lot of content that is useful to my line of inquiry. It gives me a look into what gun manufacturers think of the new laws as well as some of the Congressmen. It shows me that the gun manufacturers' point of view on gun control is get out before we get shut down. They know that the new gun control laws will basically make them go out of business. This article also shows me how Jeff Duncan is trying to save gun manufacturers by allowing them to set up shop in South Carolina. Duncan is obviously against the new gun control laws and does

not plan on putting any of them into effect in South Carolina. This article is very current. It was written in February 2013 so it is relevant to my topic.

Tien, Charles. "The Debate Over Gun Control." The Debate Over Gun Control. Hunter College, 5 Mar. 1998. Web. 17 Mar. 2013. Charles Tien writes how major gun freedom activists are happy that the media is very

conservative in how they report about guns. Tien thinks that the media is for gun freedom because it introduces movies such as James Bond where he thinks it makes the American people want to own firearms. He also believes that the media shows things like gun price and what type of gun to buy to make people think gun freedom is right for the American people. He thinks that the media should be helping the gun control activists by censoring things shown on television. Charles Tien is a political science professor at Hunter College. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 1988 and his Ph. D. from the University of Iowa in 1997 for political science. He has been published multiple times for his work on political science and now specializes in american politics, congress, and quantitative research methods. Tien's article is very relevant to my line of inquiry because it shows me the voice of gun control activists. This article shows me how gun control activists believe that the media is actually helping gun freedom. This is the same thing that the poll taken by Kenneth Dowler showed. They both go against the popular thought that the media is helping gun control. I will be able to use this article as an opposing view on what the popular is on gun control. This article is not as current as my others because it was written in 1998. But even though it does seem a little out of date, America was still dealing with the same issues with gun control in 1998. If

anything, the research that Tien has done will be supported more with todays issues on gun control.

Lampo, David. "Gun Control: Myths and Realities." Cato Institute. Cato Institute, 13 May 2000. Web. 17 Mar. 2013. David Lampo writes in his article a few myths that are commonly believe by the general

public because the media has made people believe them. One of the myths that Lampo describes is that thousands of children die each year by firearms. Lampo goes on to rebut this myth by saying how only a about 150 children are killed in gun related accidents. He also describes how the Columbine incident was not actually a flaw in the current gun laws and that Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold violated many gun laws to obtain their firearms. David Lampo graduated from Penn State University. He written many articles that have been published by the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Los Angles Times, and many more. He currently works for the Cato Institute JustWrite Editorial Services. This article is very relevant to my line of inquiry because it shows how the media has made a lot of false accusations on how the current gun control laws are flawed. This article shows how the current gun laws are also preventing some of the things that the media says they are worsening. Lampo shows how the new gun control laws that are supposed to be put into effect are not necessary if we enforce the ones that are already in effect. An interesting point that Lampo makes to prove his point is that Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold would have failed a background check so they had to get a friend to purchase some of the weapons they used in their massacre which is illegal. This article was written in 2013 so it is very current and relevant to my line of inquiry.
